This collection of time lapse art videos showcases several different projects that will inspire you to create! From pointed pen calligraphy to watercolor to chalk markers, there’s a medium here for everyone.
I’m a proponent of using creativity to slow down, relax, and take it easy. That said, time lapse art videos always enthrall me. It’s so satisfying to watch a project that took a considerable chunk of time come together in a matter of seconds! Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite videos from my Time Lapse Collection with you. These videos will inspire you to get to creating over the chilly, cozy weekend!
1. Painting a Watercolor Portrait
At first, it seems impossible that this portrait will come together. The components are just too distinct and disjointed. Then, all of a sudden, there’s a vibrant person staring back at you!
This time lapse art video was created from an instructional video included in The Ultimate Beginner’s Watercolor Online Course. Enroll in that course, and you’ll learn everything from the basics through how to paint a watercolor portrait just like this one.
2. Making a Calligraphy Medallion
Calligraphy medallions are beautiful and intricate. They also provide such great pointed pen practice that they are calligraphy drills in disguise! In this video, the “Foxtrot” medallion from the Dancing Pen Calligraphy Medallions Worksheet comes to life in a few pen strokes.
From pencil draft to pen lines to watercolor, this painting of a row house in Amsterdam has very specific (but simple) steps. Most people find that it’s easy to add watercolor to a pen and ink drawing like this one. Just be sure to always use waterproof ink!

5. Illuminated Letter Gift Tag
Last year, I used an illuminated letter to make an artistic gift tag to label a holiday gift. I used handmade paper and the steps outlined in this tutorial to make it! The only difference is I printed out the illuminated alphabet template at about 50% to make it smaller than the default 5″ x 7″ size. (To do that, I fiddled with my printer settings.)
You can learn how to create an illuminated letter like this one in the Easy Illuminated Letter Tutorial. The concept is great for artwork to display in your home, gift tags, or cards.
6. Chalk Marker Tiles
This is one of my favorite time lapse art videos because the going was very slow for this project. I decided to decorate the back of a shelf in our entryway with a white chalk Talavera tile motif, and it took me several months to finish. The only way I could motivate myself to get done with the last four tiles was to make a time lapse video to watch later. SO satisfying.
There’s no specific tutorial for this project, but you can find Talavera tile motifs and inspiration in this tutorial.
7. Calligraphy Marinera Dancer
This calligraphy marinera dancer is a lovely calligraphy drill that makes for a fabulous greeting card or sketchbook page.
You can find instructions and a free printable worksheet to help you make this calligraphy marinera dancer here.
I hope that you enjoyed these bite-sized time lapse art videos. Remember that, above all else, the videos are for satisfaction and enjoyment. They shouldn’t make you feel pressure to make art or calligraphy quickly or without errors. Trust me, I work slowly and without perfection.
