Calming Calligraphy Mail Art (to Get Through Teething)

    October 27, 2022

    by

    Lindsey Bugbee

    Inspiration, Mail Art

My daughter has been teething for the past few days, which has been really fun for everyone. To combat all the fussing and mild sleep deprivation, I took advantage of my husband’s shifts with her to make five satisfying mail art envelopes! Today’s article is a showcase of those envelopes, with explanations and creation hints.…

    Magnificent Mail Art

Whenever I need a relaxing break, I turn to mail art. I love that mail art provides a project with specific parameters: write a legible address and apply sufficient postage. This past week, I tucked into making five different calligraphy mail art envelopes to get some quality “me-time”. My eight-month-old is teething, and she’s been a little grouchy, with dicey and interrupted nights. Creating the envelopes featured in today’s article has helped me to get through it with my sanity intact! I hope that you enjoy seeing what I came up with, and that you’re inspired to make your own creative mail art this weekend.

    1. Guilty Pleasure Mail Art

I started working on this envelope last week as an excuse to play with my composition ruler. To make the lettering, I followed the steps outlined in Nico Ng’s How to Make a Stunning Lettering Layout tutorial. Once I finished, I only applied one postage stamp to help keep the focus on the design.

    Hand-lettered Mail Art

This mail art concept was time-consuming, but it was satisfying to see all the letters and embellishments come together. I thoroughly enjoyed working on it, and it was a struggle to get myself to stop!

    Hand-lettered Mail Art
I used a combination of Pilot G2 05 and Pilot G2 10 pens for the lettering. For the pointed pen work, I used Ziller ink and a Brause EF66 nib + oblique pen.

    2. Vintage Banner Calligraphy Mail Art

Does this concept look familiar? That’s because you might have seen it last year in The Ultimate Vintage Banner Illustration Tutorial. That was such a fun project that I decided to revisit it for this piece of mail art. The components are simple: iron gall ink with a touch of gold watercolor. This calligraphy mail art has two postage stamps on it, both for aesthetic purposes and to pay the non-machinable envelope charge for the wax seal on the back.

This address was written using Janet Style calligraphy.

    3. Starry Banner Embellished Envelope

To make this envelope, I used my 5″ composition ruler to draw a banner, which features the recipient’s name written in George Style lettering. Since there’s some watercolor here, I used (waterproof) Ziller ink to create all the lettering and the calligraphy.  Then, I went over the banner with yellow ochre watercolor and added in some stars and dots to the rays above the banner.

Mail art with a banner and stars
This simple mail art includes three postage stamps that predominately feature yellow or green tones (like the envelope itself).

    4. Vintage Postage Calligraphy Envelope

The focus of this envelope is pretty calligraphy. I just felt like using iron gall ink to make nice, clean calligraphy with white ink reinforcement strokes. Then, once the calligraphy was finished, I relied on postage stamps with mellow color schemes to add visual interest.

    Calligraphy envelope with postage

To make envelopes like this one, I like to use the guidelines templates from the Marvelous Mail eBook. In that eBook, you’ll find three templates that helps you write the recipient’s name a little larger than the rest of the address.

For more information about using vintage postage stamps on envelopes, see this article.

    5. Star Rays Calligraphy Mail Art

This simple mail art was created on fancy handmade cotton paper. It takes a while to write on paper that has so much tooth, but the result is well worth it! I used white ink to write Dr. Lunn’s address in wavy Kaitlin Style calligraphy, then I added in little white rays with gold watercolor stars and accent dots.

    Star Rays Mail Art
This envelope features two stamps because I feared it might weigh more than an ounce.

    What Goes Inside These Envelopes?

These envelopes were created to house notes of gratitude for students who filmed a video testimonial for the Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Online Course. I recently found some Frida Kahlo cards at my local paperie, and I wanted to pair them with pretty envelopes. Thus, the envelopes featured in today’s post came to be!

    Frida Kahlo Greeting Cards
These all-purpose greeting cards showcase Frida Kahlo’s vibrant art.

    Envelope Care

When you invest so much time and creativity into making artistic envelopes, it’s important to protect your work. You can bet that I treated all of these mail art pieces with MicroGlaze to ensure no smudging or water damage. It takes a little bit of extra time, but the insurance is worth it!

    Magnificent Mail Art
These envelopes are headed out tomorrow! Sometimes, mail art takes a little longer to arrive than standard envelopes. I’m guessing they’ll arrive at their destinations in 1-2 weeks.

Whether you’ve got a teething baby or not, this is when the year starts to get really hectic. It’s a lot of coordinating itineraries, figuring out gifts, and planning meals and get-togethers. While it’s a joyous time of year, it can all be a little much! If you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmed, try making a mail art envelope. Seriously. It’s amazing how much one little project that you make for someone else can make such a big difference. If you don’t have someone to send something to (a thank you card, a birthday card), you can send a note to a More Love Letters recipient.

I hope that you enjoyed my little calligraphy mail art showcase! I still have a couple more envelopes left to make, so you’ll likely notice photos of those in the coming weeks. Thanks so much for reading, and have a fabulous Halloween weekend!

    Warmly,

Is there a technique to get the spacing even and centered? Mine always ends up too close or far apart.

I just recently moved in with my daughter and her family. This new living arrangement should afford me much time to practice calligraphy.
Meanwhile, I will continue to dream of a day when I might receive one of these beautiful envelopes from you. 🙂
Thanks for bringing the world to love what I discovered over 50 years ago.

Love the incorporation recently of Nico’s composition ruler and the fact that you’re drawing more attention to handlettering! I know you’ve done a lot of handlettering before in the past but it’s neat to see a fresh take on these different projects.

❤️ Valentine’s Day calligraphy drills ❤️ ❤️ Valentine’s Day calligraphy drills ❤️ I’m using a Nikko G nib, a straight pen, and Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bombay ink (red). Drills are good because they help you to practice your stroke contrast, writing rhythm, and spacing. You don’t have to do them *all* the time (projects also help you practice!), but I find them to be pretty relaxing ... even more so when they’re part of a worksheet, and all you really need to do is follow directions.

The worksheet shown here is a freebie from TPK. Direct link can be found in the comments section! ✍️

WHAT a trip down memory lane, going through the 20 WHAT a trip down memory lane, going through the 2016 TPK Blog archives to make this little compilation. I loved 2016 and cannot believe it was a decade ago!! 😱 That year brought some of my favorite projects, like the calligraphy ampersand (which is still a popular tutorial), fabric wedding invitations, and George Style hand lettering. 2016 was also the year that my husband and I traveled to Brazil, which is still my favorite place I’ve ever visited.

The year ended with a blitz of calligraphy workshops ... I taught in Portland, Berkeley, Brooklyn, and Tampa — all in close succession! November saw my family trying out brush pens (spoiler alert: only my 2-year-old niece, who is now 12, has stuck with brush pens), and December brought *the very first* TPK Holiday Calligraphy Worksheet set, which was created as the result of a reader request. 10 years later, I still make a new holiday worksheet set each year.

Grateful for TPK’s 2016 ride, and I’m so looking forward to what 2026 holds! Thanks to everyone who has helped this creative corner of the internet continue to thrive. 🙏 🎨

There is nothing like a clean, well-organized wate There is nothing like a clean, well-organized watercolor chart. I used to make watercolor chart layouts using math and grids (which, trust me, was painful for someone like me, who doesn’t *love* numbers/measuring/calculations) ... then it occurred to me that I could use Photoshop to give myself a little boost. Much less math and fretting, which for me equals much more joy! Palette is from @greenleafblue — she made it so I could have a gorgeous palette for “The Calligraphy Book”, and this color chart definitely helped to boost the aesthetic of an already stunning supply. 🎨😍

If you’re curious about this technique for making a watercolor chart, you can search the TPK website for “watercolor chart” ... there’s a detailed blog post over how to use the template method that I’m showing you here!

An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of thos An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of those tools that is indispensable for a lot of applications. It was designed to make precise cuts, which, of course, it does well! But, you can also use it to scrape off unwanted ink smears (pro tip: after the fact, you can smooth disturbed paper fibers with a pebble), create interesting interior cuts, trim tiny details that scissors can’t reach, make stencils and templates, refine collage elements, and gently correct small drawing or calligraphy mistakes.

I have used X-Acto knives for many TPK Blog tutorials, but up until last week, I’d never written a guide that puts the X-Acto knife front and center. That guide now exists, and you can find it by visiting the link 🔗 in my profile. Be sure to watch the tutorial video!

Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a nutshell at TPK! 🥜

This year, I loved teaching at @thehappyevercrafter’s Workshop Week and participating in @calmingcalligraphy’s World Calligraphy as Meditation Day. And seeing the TPK calligraphy kit featured in @newyorkermag’s 2025 holiday gift guide was an unexpected (and delightful) cherry on top! 🍒

So much of what happened over the past year, though, was shaped by the TPK Premium community. Their questions and feedback helped guide Hand Lettering 101, while their encouragement fueled tutorials on topics ranging from turning red wine into calligraphy ink to illustrating recipes, painting with a wedge brush, and creating greeting cards and envelope art. 💌 That same support made it possible to create new worksheets and resources that others were able to enjoy as well, which I’m very grateful for.

For a fuller recap (with helpful links and details) I shared a 2025 reflection on the TPK blog (link in bio).

✨ A little comparison today … because not all ✨ A little comparison today ... because not all golds behave the same.

✦ Finetec gold → bright, cheerful, and versatile
✦ Greenleaf & Blueberry faux brass → softer, muted, and stunning
✦ Yasutomo pale gold → velvety, subtle shimmer with a sensible amount of sparkle

I love having all three on hand and choosing based on the feel I want for a project. It’s tough to go wrong! ✨
