I started TPK with a bottle of India ink, a dip pen, a paintbrush, and a set of 24 Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolors. I’m convinced that Cotman is the best beginner watercolor set out there! Here are some of the things I love about this set of 24 half pans:

Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolors are student grade, which means that some of the pigments used to make certain colors are synthetic substitutes. These substitutions are made to keep costs low, as genuine pigment costs can be incredibly expensive. But, for a fraction of the price, these are fabulous to start off with because of their vibrancy and smoothness. Winsor & Newton Cotman is what got me hooked on watercolors! While I like to use artist grade watercolors, I still have a special place in my heart for the Cotman palette. You’ll see that I use these colors for many watercolor projects here on TPK!

Lovely selection of hues! And very affordable beautiful colors too! Frankly I don’t think I would be able to tell the difference between professional and student grade, as these pigments are just wonderful! So happy to have found a metal tin as well! Thank you Lindsey!

I am having so much fun with this watercolor set! The first thing I did was create a paint chart as you described in one of your blogs. Now I use the set to create all kinds of greeting cards for family and friends. The selection of colors is wonderful, and all of them are rich and beautiful!

Great set of water colors! Any color you could need is in here and if you want to experiment mixing colors you can use the metal pans connected to the box. Very satisfied with this purchase.

Love this set of watercolors! I have a set in a plastic studio palette but these are much better for travel as they don’ t move around!
