These gold sumi inks are a great way to add accents to your calligraphy and art projects.
You can expect your sumi watercolor to arrive in a clear plastic container.

Here's a little comparison of the golds. You can see that the Yasutomo shimmers -- but does not glitter -- in sunlight. It's a very sophisticated metallic tone!
If you want to use your sumi watercolor as a calligraphy ink, don't erase over it. The pigment will become displaced. A fix for this is adding a drop of gum arabic to bind the particles together a little more.

While teaching a calligraphy workshop at Twig & Fig in Berkeley, I saw a collection of porcelain dishes filled with metallic watercolor and immediately fell in love with both the aesthetic of the actual supply and its applications. While Twig & Fig is no longer there, I continue to re-live the joy of discovering these watercolors through using them often.

Here are some things to note about these watercolors:

  • You can use them as a calligraphy ink or a watercolor; it’s quite versatile. If you plan to erase over whatever you write, however, you should add a drop of gum arabic beforehand. Otherwise, several pigment particles will smudge away (see photo).
  • Both of the watercolor tones dry into an elegant, velvety hue that shimmers. It’s very elegant and doesn’t offer an over-the-top glitter effect.
  • You’ll notice that the colors take on a bit of a black tone when you add water into them. This is normal and to be expected! The black will not show up in your final work.
  • Try using these sumi watercolors for making inky poppies motifs and gold spatters. The effect is so beautiful!

Description

This listing is for an individual pan of Yasutomo Sumi-e gold watercolor. Choose your tone; reddish gold or pale gold. Each pan is just under 3″ in diameter and comes in a porcelain dish. Once you’ve used all the color (it will likely take years), you can re-use the dish for blending different acrylic paint or watercolor tones.
