Pre-baby, I loved going to Tampa, Florida, in the winters to teach calligraphy workshops at The Paper Seahorse. The Paper Seahorse is a magical shop in a lovely converted craftsman home! The brainchild of my supremely creative friend Tona Bell, it’s filled to the brim with wonders, including Flow Magazine, Palomino pencils, and vintage typewriters. An eclectic assortment of light fixtures, artwork, and window dressings complement the merchandise!
The last time I was in Tampa (2017), Tona and I decided to collaborate on a calligraphy kit. At that point, I had no interest in selling physical products, and she, of course, was all set up to source, combine, and ship supplies! So, we came up with two versions of calligraphy kits: an Ultimate Kit and an Essential Kit. Today, we’ve teamed up to give away one of our super-cool Ultimate Kits! The TPS + TPK Ultimate Modern Calligraphy Starter Kit includes all of my recommended calligraphy supplies plus a few delightful extras. You’ll enjoy velvety sumi ink, a brass-flanged oblique pen, a glass jar + dappen dish, and a lovely cotton cleaning cloth, among other delights!
Each TPS + TPK calligraphy kit also comes with an exclusive link to a little corner of the TPK website that includes a seahorse-themed drills sheet! The drills sheet provides a fun and artistic way to practice your calligraphy with the supplies included in the kit.
If you receive the TPK newsletter, you know that I’m working on making my own calligraphy starter kit! When Tona and I first decided to collaborate, I had no intention of selling physical products. It was a combination of feeling overwhelmed by finding suppliers and not wanting to be tied down to one spot, having to ship things out. Now that we have a seven-month-old, though, we’re home much more often than we used to be, that’s for sure! And Hernán spent a good couple of months sourcing suppliers, so we jumped that hurdle as well.
My calligraphy kits won’t be available until the late summer. I’m still in the design phase, coming up with nib tin designs, artwork for the calligraphy kit box, and a practice booklet to accompany my kits. Even after I release my own kits, however, I will be glad to have my name associated with the TPK + TPS kits! I’m proud of the collaboration that Tona and I have come up with. I’m also delighted with the aesthetic spin that The Paper Seahorse puts on these kits! In short: keep an eye out for the TPK kits, but know that TPK + TPS kits are also amazing!

I want to end this post with the frank acknowledgment that calligraphy kits — good calligraphy kits — can be a bit spendy! In addition to the cost of supplies, you’re also paying for the time it takes someone to put the kits together and extras like packaging. I suppose a good way to put it is this: you pay a bit extra for expertise and aesthetic delight! If you want to save some money, though, consider DIYing a kit.
