I mentioned crosshatching in this video. If that’s something you’re interested in, be sure to check out The Beginner’s Guide to Crosshatching! The Not Your Average Calligraphy Drills: Food Edition, also mentioned in the video, can be found here.

    Why Do Calligraphy Drills?

Why bother with pointed pen calligraphy drills? I have dedicated a whole article to that very question. Basically, doing drills can benefit you in a few ways. First of all, they help calligraphy beginners to master control of the dip pen. Calligraphy drills are really just a collection of different strokes that are found in letters, so every time you do drills, your lettering also improves.

If you’re a seasoned calligrapher, these drills can provide you with a fun warmup before you start on a project!

Calligraphy drills — and, in particular, artistic drills like these — also provide a way to switch up your calligraphy practice. Instead of writing “A”, “A”, “A”, all of a sudden you’re drawing a mushroom or an avocado! It’s difficult to get bored with practicing when you have creative options like these.
