The Ultimate New Year’s Resolutions Guide + Printable Goal List | The Postman's Knock

This week is my very favorite week of the year. I start looking forward to it around the beginning of December, when the old year starts to wrap up and the new year draws close! The reason for the excitement? New Year’s resolutions! I know that for some people, resolutions are a cliché. Every year, though, I enjoy making a goal list, and always do my best to complete it! Today, I will discuss some tips and inspiration for coming up with goals that stick, and provide you with a free printable goal list.

    Goal-Setting Tips

First, let’s define a goal! A goal is something that you want to achieve. Your goal should have a defined course of action that will allow you to achieve it. Goals are measurable, so at the end of this year, you should be able to say, “OK, I achieved (or did not achieve) this thing I wanted to achieve.”

The Ultimate New Year’s Resolutions Guide + Printable Goal List | The Postman's Knock
You can find this free printable 2019 goal list by clicking here!

For about fifteen years, I’ve been making New Year’s resolutions in the form of goal lists. Those years of goal-setting have taught me a few tips, which I hope will be helpful to you!

    1. Goals should add enrichment to your life.

As you consider goals, think of how they can add to your overall happiness. For example, let’s say you want to learn calligraphy. Before you write that on your goal list, think about how learning calligraphy will make you happy. Will you use it to address your wedding invitations, which will save a significant amount of money and give you a sense of accomplishment? Or will you use it as a tool to help you decompress after particularly grueling days at the office? Make sure you can name concrete reasons for why you want to achieve your goals, and you’ll be more likely to stay on track!

    2. Goals should be obtainable.

It’s kind of like what they say about diets: if you go into overhaul mode, you’re destined for failure. Keep that in mind for all of your goals, health-related and otherwise! Celebrate small milestones along the way, and don’t shoot for a dramatic change. For example, let’s say you want to learn how to work with watercolors this year. You’d start with the basics: painting spheres and cones, then move on to easy projects (like watercolor wreaths), and, finally, attempt more advanced projects!

Always start simple with your goals! For example, if you’re learning watercolors, the Watercolor Hexagons Mail Art Tutorial would be a great project to start with.

    3. Be specific.

Instead of resolving to “be more creative”, try challenging yourself to make one creative project per month (for example). General goals aren’t measurable, but you can easily keep track of specific goals — which is always encouraging because you feel a sense of accomplishment as you achieve them!

How to Frame Artwork on the Cheap | The Postman's Knock
If you’d like to try making one creative project per month, try making DIY matted frames for your photos and artwork! Not only do you get to exercise your creativity, but you’ll also add warmth and personality to your home.

If the idea of making one creative project per month appeals to you, here are twelve tutorials that you might enjoy making (they’re my favorites)!:

    • Retro Floral Thank You Card Tutorial

    4. Break large goals into sub-goals.

Let’s say you have a big goal like “start a calligraphy business”. Wow, that goal sounds like a lot! Once you break down the various steps that you need to take to achieve the goal, though, it doesn’t seem so intimidating.

Iron Gall Ink Place Cards | The Postman's Knock
Why not try starting a calligraphy business this year? Worst that can happen, you’ll lose just a bit of time putting together samples and photos. Best that can happen, you’ll make some extra income doing something you love!

Assuming you already know how to create calligraphy (and if you don’t, then you can always learn), here’s what you might put on your New Year’s resolutions list:

    1. Read The Calligrapher’s Business Handbook
    2. Make calligraphy samples (envelopes, place cards, invitations, etc.)
    3. Take photos of calligraphy samples
    4. Start an Etsy shop
    5. Make thoughtful item descriptions for each listing in your shop
    6. Draft a Terms of Service agreement for clients

Inspiration + Questions to Ask Yourself

While goals should always be uniquely yours, it doesn’t hurt to have some goal inspiration! Below, you’ll find some questions that you can ask yourself when coming up with goals.

How to Make a Sketchbook Journal (and Why You Should!) | The Postman's Knock
These are the goals that I recording in a sketchbook journal circa 2006! (I vividly remember making these sketchbook pages … time flies!)
    1. What aspects of your life do you want to change? (Examples include your career, emotional wellbeing, physical wellbeing, etc.)
    2. Imagine it’s December 31, 2019. What specific goals do you hope you can say that you achieved in the past 365 days?
    3. What happened in 2018 that you didn’t like? How can you avoid having that happen again?
    4. What are some small things that you can do daily that will make a difference in how you feel? (For me, this is making the bed, keeping my workspace tidy, and wearing a bit of makeup.)
    5. What are some new skills that you would like to learn? (I can help you learn calligraphy, lettering, and Photoshop!)
    6. What are some new hobbies that you’d like to pick up?
    7. What long-term projects would you like to make or get started on? (Examples include working on a sketchbook journal, starting a blog, and/orstarting an eCommerce website or Etsy shop.)

When I was coming up with my own goals for 2019, I enjoyed referencing this LifeHacker article. If you’re looking for ideas, it’s worth skimming!

    Free Printable Goal List

For the past few years, I’ve offered free printable goal lists to those who wish to use one! This year, I’ve used a simple floral theme and George Style lettering to make this printable. Please feel free to fill in the flowers with watercolor and fill out the middle of the list however you wish! Keeping your goal list in a place where you will see it every day will increase your chances of sticking to your New Year’s resolutions.

    Hi, Lindsey!
    Happy New Year!
The idea to create a list of goals to be framed is more than creative. Every year I begin with a similar list but it’s easy to forget it in my regular notebook. Last year I began to use de BuJo system and my goal-achievement improved but I haven´t reached at least 20% of them. To transform the list in a beautiful piece of artwork, and place it in a visible place, seems to be a great idea to stay focused the whole year round. Thanks again.

My best wishes to you and your family.

I like what you said about goals adding enrichment to your life. I’ve lost that habit of setting new goals every year because I often start out making goals that are way too big. The questions you listed are really helpful as well! I’ll have to sit down to think of some goals for 2019!

An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of thos An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of those tools that is indispensable for a lot of applications. It was designed to make precise cuts, which, of course, it does well! But, you can also use it to scrape off unwanted ink smears (pro tip: after the fact, you can smooth disturbed paper fibers with a pebble), create interesting interior cuts, trim tiny details that scissors can’t reach, make stencils and templates, refine collage elements, and gently correct small drawing or calligraphy mistakes.

I have used X-Acto knives for many TPK Blog tutorials, but up until last week, I’d never written a guide that puts the X-Acto knife front and center. That guide now exists, and you can find it by visiting the link 🔗 in my profile. Be sure to watch the tutorial video!

Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a nutshell at TPK! 🥜

This year, I loved teaching at @thehappyevercrafter’s Workshop Week and participating in @calmingcalligraphy’s World Calligraphy as Meditation Day. And seeing the TPK calligraphy kit featured in @newyorkermag’s 2025 holiday gift guide was an unexpected (and delightful) cherry on top! 🍒

So much of what happened over the past year, though, was shaped by the TPK Premium community. Their questions and feedback helped guide Hand Lettering 101, while their encouragement fueled tutorials on topics ranging from turning red wine into calligraphy ink to illustrating recipes, painting with a wedge brush, and creating greeting cards and envelope art. 💌 That same support made it possible to create new worksheets and resources that others were able to enjoy as well, which I’m very grateful for.

For a fuller recap (with helpful links and details) I shared a 2025 reflection on the TPK blog (link in bio).

✨ A little comparison today … because not all ✨ A little comparison today ... because not all golds behave the same.

✦ Finetec gold → bright, cheerful, and versatile
✦ Greenleaf & Blueberry faux brass → softer, muted, and stunning
✦ Yasutomo pale gold → velvety, subtle shimmer with a sensible amount of sparkle

I love having all three on hand and choosing based on the feel I want for a project. It’s tough to go wrong! ✨
