    Double, double, toil and trouble! Have you started watching Hocus Pocus yet? {Upon writing this line, I shouted to my boyfriend: “Hernán! Have you ever seen Hocus Pocus?” The answer was in the negative. I must correct this IMMEDIATELY.}

    At any rate, Halloween is fast approaching, and I am getting so excited for the candy and little trick-or-treaters. In the meantime, I’ve been sending out Halloween cards … just little snippets to say “hi” to friends and wish them a happy Halloween. In true TPK fashion, I couldn’t just send the cards in any envelope, so I came up with this neat envelope template:

    How cute is she? You can download the envelope template here. The final template will render a 5 3/4″ x 4 1/8″ envelope. I printed the template off on brown kraft paper {you can also use a paper bag cut to 8.5″ x 11″}, but of course you should feel free to print this little witch off on whatever type of paper you’d like!

    In the meantime, I’ve been working hard on these fairytale envelope templates:

    I created three: a mermaid and her fish friends, Goldilocks and the the bears, and the frog prince with a lovestruck princess. You can purchase those templates by clicking here. But first things first: download your free witch-ed awesome Halloween envelope template and get to sending snail mail!

    {P.S. – Planning on handing out candy to trick-or-treaters this year? Put a few pieces in these printable Halloween goody bags!:}

    Have the happiest of Halloweens, and enjoy this sweet little witch!

    Warmly,

The backs of envelopes need love, too! In fact, it The backs of envelopes need love, too! In fact, it could be argued that the back of an envelope gives you a better canvas than the front because nothing has to be written on the back of an envelope. It’s just blank space that will surprise and delight when utilized to its full potential.

In this video, I’m making a gold flourished raccoon to make the back of an envelope literally shine.   I used the traceable template + the instructions from TPK’s Limited Edition Woodland Creatures Calligraphy Flourishing Worksheet — available this week (link in profile) — and enjoyed a relaxing few minutes listening to a good podcast and getting some quality calligraphy practice in. At the end, my loops and swirls came together to make an eye-catching creature!

There’s no downside to making a project like this. First, you get to jazz up the back of an envelope, which benefits your recipient. Second, you get to hone your calligraphy skills in an engaging and fun way. Let me emphasize: you don’t have to make boring calligraphy drills if that doesn’t gel with you. You’ll only stick with calligraphy if your practice is fun and just the right amount of challenging!
  If you’d like to learn how to flourish this raccoon (plus an owl, a squirrel, and a fox), check out TPK’s worksheet set by visiting the link in my profile. You’ll be glad you did!

My upcoming book — available holiday season 2024 — will include a tutorial over how to make this eye-catching piece, but for now, you can use the filigree leaves tutorial on the TPK Blog to learn how to create filigree leaf. 🍂 Check out the link in my profile to find that tutorial!

🌸 Do you have a go-to bloom you love to sketch 🌸 Do you have a go-to bloom you love to sketch and/or is there a flower you find challenging? ✍️

For me, drawing flowers *never* gets old. I rarely do it from life ... I just start drawing petals and take it from there, enjoying the doodle process as I go. This illustration was actually created with a Muji pen, which usually is delightfully waterproof (and proved to be so in this case). Then, I idly watercolored over the Muji sketch.

If you’re in the mood for drawing flowers, check out the link in my profile to see all of TPK’s floral illustration tutorials. I know you’ll be delighted at the variation and selection! My favorite projects are probably the watercolor botanical letter and the lily (which you just make using a Pilot G2 black pen and Finetec gold). Perfection! 💐

One of my favorite things about watercolors: you c One of my favorite things about watercolors: you can build on them! Make your base layer, wait for it to dry, then use a brush or a pointed pen to add a pattern, like I’m doing here. Just some fun doodling. ✍️

If you want to learn how to harness the power of watercolors, definitely consider enrolling in the TPK Ultimate Beginner’s Watercolor Course. It will teach you little useful techniques like this one and much, much more. If you need convincing, read the reviews! More info by following the link in my profile.

Think of your young family members — what song/s Think of your young family members — what song/s did they inexplicably latch on to? My son was a big “Baby Shark” kind of guy when he was younger ... now that he’s (just a couple weeks shy of) 5, though, he likes songs from his favorite movies and TV shows. Songs like “Sunflower” by Post Malone and Swae Lee — or, if we’re unlucky — the Spidey Team theme song. 👎

My daughter is the one of my two kids who is extremely opinionated when it comes to music! For her, it’s Madonna’s “Material Girl” and Pitbull’s “Don’t Stop the Party”. Which, to be honest, is fine with me — because that’s certainly preferably to “Baby Shark”.

Talking technicals: This video shows me writing using iron gall ink because, as I explained in yesterday’s post, iron gall is pretty reliable and easy to write with. Good for filming videos and making flourishes! To read more about iron gall ink, visit the link in my profile. Here’s betting that when monks were brewing up this ink thousands of years ago, they had no idea it would end up being used to write the words “Baby” and “Shark” in this context.

How many times have you seen nibs smoothly sailing How many times have you seen nibs smoothly sailing across the page here on Instagram, at a speed that’s *much* faster than your own? How discouraging is that!?
.
First, know that when calligraphers make videos for Instagram, there’s pressure to present the viewer with a quick reward. For that reason, you’ll see a lot of time lapse videos, which means there’s a warped idea of the real speed of calligraphy. You just assume that everyone is writing really quickly, which is far from the case. (If I don’t post a time lapse, I almost always post a video where the time I took to dip my pen has been cut out — just so things speed along faster. Or, like in the case of this video, I’m showing you snippets.)
.
Second: when calligraphers make videos for Instagram, we’re almost always going to choose an ink that’s easy to use and doesn’t require a ton of dipping. Think: walnut ink, iron gall ink, diluted gouache — stuff like that. I save the impressive but more-work-to-use inks for projects that I’m not making videos of.
.
What I’m trying to say is this: you’ll see a lot of calligraphy videos on social media. Never, ever let those videos prompt you to speed up your writing, and remember that the people who are posting the videos face pressure to make it look easy/simple. Calligraphy is a calming activity that forces you to slow down, relax, and solve problems like skipping upstrokes, railroading, etc. It’s not something to be done quickly. Use calligraphy as a powerful tool to counter hectic everyday life; that’s what it’s here for!
