Elegant Printable Watercolor Cards + a Freebie

    Free Printables, Printable Goodies, Watercolor

I often find myself short on time but full of reasons to send cards — from thank yous to thinking of yous, I send out at least one card per week. If you’re anything like me, though, you probably don’t have hours to put in to making a beautiful DIY greeting card every time the…

This precious painting of an elephant, a mouse, and a tiger is available in the Printable Watercolor Cards Packet.

I used to snub printables because “back in the day”, you could always tell when something was printed on a home printer. Telltale ink streaks, flimsy paper, and lackluster colors always gave it away! Now, though, printers have come a long way. Not only are they cheap, but many produce high-quality pieces.

I use an HP OfficeJet 4650, and I really like it! Before this printer, I had an Epson WorkForce, and I enjoyed that, too.

Lately, I’ve been relying on my printer a lot. As the birth of our baby nears (I’m due in 10 days — ten days!), I’m finding that I’ve got a lot of gratitude but very little time to show it. So, I developed a workaround: I use scans of illustrations to make elegant, artistic cards in Photoshop. Then, I print the cards out, fold them, and send.

How pretty is this? I printed it out for my aunt, who gifted us with a baby blanket earlier this month. Artisanal paper from Fabulous Fancy Pants gives the card a luxe feel! You can find this tulips card in the Printable Watercolor Cards Packet.

The whole point of making art is to slow down, take some time off, and get lost in the creative process. Realistically, though, sometimes you just don’t have the time to pour your energy into a project like a DIY greeting card. At the same time, you want to show someone how much you appreciate them by sending something unique — so it’s a bit of a conundrum!

The Fox in a Meadow card is appropriate for virtually any occasion!

I put together the Printable Watercolor Cards Packet for anyone who might find themselves in that situation — myself included. Basically, I have a little collection of illustrations that I’ve created throughout the years for various occasions. If I liked the illustration enough, I made a scan of it — and until now, those scan files have been sitting dormant in my hard drive. This morning, I decided to change that! I picked out five illustrations and made them into greeting card printables.

Each card that I made comes to you as a template like this one. You just cut out the piece along the guidelines, fold it in half, and you’ve got a card! The packet includes five cards in three different sizes.

Tips for Making Professional-Looking Cards at Home

To make nice printables at home, you really only need two things: white cardstock and a printer with genuine inks (don’t use generic inks — they’re almost always lower quality). Make sure your printer can handle the weight of cardstock that you’ve chosen! I like to use 100# cardstock because it’s nice and sturdy, and it doesn’t give my printer any problems.

Elegant Printable Watercolor Cards + a Freebie | The Postman's Knock
For a cool variation, try cutting semi-circles in the corners of your cards! This Thyme card also appears in the Printable Watercolor Cards Packet.

If you enjoy making printable cards, there are two other instruments that can come in really handy! The first is a guillotine style paper cutter, which I use all the time to make clean cuts along card guidelines. The second is a bone folder, which you can run along the card’s fold to ensure a crisp crease.

    A Freebie Card

I always like to offer a freebie when I can, so I created a printable out of the Hot Air Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial that I posted a few weeks ago! I liked the result of that card, so I scanned it before sending it out. If you don’t have the time to make the tutorial, you can download the freebie printable by clicking here.

Elegant Printable Watercolor Cards + a Freebie | The Postman's Knock
This card is available as a freebie, which you can find here! If you’d prefer to make a card like this yourself, you can learn how to do that in this tutorial.

    Other Uses for These Printables

Remember that you don’t have to relegate yourself to only using the illustrations in the Printable Watercolor Cards Packet for cards! You should feel free to decoupage the illustrations on various projects that need a creative boost. From sketchbooks to envelope art, the illustrations can add some artistic personality!

Elegant Printable Watercolor Cards + a Freebie | The Postman's Knock
I used the graphic from the Fox in a Meadow card to add charm to this otherwise plain brown paper sack. Instant gift bag!

I hope that the Printable Watercolor Cards Packet helps you out next time you’re in need of a beautiful card, but you don’t have the time to make one yourself. I didn’t include any calligraphy or lettering on these cards, so hopefully you’ll be able to use at least one of them for any given occasion! And, of course, I hope you’ll help yourself to the freebie Happy Birthday card. It’s my pleasure to provide it for you!

Thanks very much for reading TPK, and have a fantastic weekend!

    Warmly,

Can you write using dip pen calligraphy on the 270gsm cardstock without the ink bleeding?

Hi Jamie! I would doubt it … usually cardstock isn’t so great for dip pen calligraphy. You could use faux calligraphy, though!

Lindsey, Are you feeling nesty? I got a terrific urge to clean the week before. Hope it’s a cakewalk!

The answer to that one is interesting! Yes, I’m feeling nesty — but in more of an electronic way. I think that these cards were actually a result of that … I was doing some hard drive “housecleaning” when I found the images, and I was like, “Wow, why aren’t these being used for anything?” I also am working like a fiend on making a new calligraphy drills packet, and I made Photoshop mockups for a redesign of this website! As far as the house goes, though, my feet get way too swollen to clean it! Hernán pulls all the weight there. 🙂 I hope it’s a cakewalk, too … only five days until the due date!

Hi, Ms. Lindsey! First of all, congratulations and hoping for your safe delivery when your baby greets the world soon. 🙂

Wow, the instant gift bag looks wonderful! I think it could work for giveaways/tokens, especially since the -Ber months are here and I need suggestions for Christmas giveaways. Thank you for this. 😀

I have been a subscriber of your beautiful blog for quite a while now, and I’m truly grateful for you and your pieces of advice. I’m still working on getting the right tools and practicing. However, I just can’t seem to make it as beautiful as the way you do your calligraphy! 🙂

✨ One of the most beloved assignments from Lesso ✨ One of the most beloved assignments from Lesson 5 of Hand Lettering 101 was this playful project: design an artistic alphabet where no two letters look the same.

The idea? JUST PLAY. 🎨 I used watercolor and a paintbrush, but many students grabbed markers, pens, or anything colorful on hand. The results were incredible — @adriennelovesletters gave it her own flair, Isabel C. made it three times, and Laura M. created a stunning version too. (You can peek at more inside the TPK Premium Discord!)

If you’re ready to try this project yourself, you’ll find the Hand Lettering 101 eCourse waiting in the TPK Catalog. Just head to the link in my bio to be taken to the TPK website. 💌
