I love this menu from the Frasca Caffe here in Boulder. This is the outside cover of the menu; the inside reveals an array of Italian sweet treats and sandwiches. I believe this is the work of photographer Dave Woody, who also took photographs for the Frasca owners’ other restaurant’s website, Pizzeria Locale. I really like how whoever designed this menu took a compelling yet simple picture and added the white text.

This summer, my mother and I went to an estate sale in Brewster, Kansas, which is a town the size of a speck in Western Kansas. I love estate sales because the point generally is to get rid of everything rather than make a heap of money. Dually, near the corner of the garage the owners had mountains of books — mostly vintage, all for free. I picked out a few, and one of my favorites was Chicago: A Pictoral History by Herman Kogan, published in 1958. The pages are pleasantly thick and yellowed, and the content top-notch (you can’t beat a picture of a bejeweled naked woman on a horse)!

The other day, my old roommate Sarah texted me to tell me she was needing some soup recipes. When we lived in Lawrence, Kansas, that’s all I ate! Well, that plus hummus. It was so easy to have a big pot of soup simmering on the stove, and when guests came over, they were able to eat their fill.
I looked through my collection and realized that I really only made one kind of soup: incredibly easy minestrone. Then I thought perhaps Sarah isn’t the only one who could use a little minestrone in her life, thus this recipe card:
My second favorite soup to make, and probably the tastiest, is Tamale Soup from Follow Your Heart’s Vegetarian Soup Cookbook. It’s creamy and delicious, though not very brothy!
