Pointed pen calligraphy isn’t limited to letters! Your pen can just as easily create artwork. With TPK’s newest worksheet, you’ll learn how to transform simple strokes into a flourished athletic shoe.
An athletic shoe might seem like a silly thing to flourish, but I made one on a whim back in 2017 and popped it on Instagram. People seemed to really like it, and since then, I’ve received several requests for instructions on how to make one. Today, I’m happy to introduce the Flourished Athletic Shoe Calligraphy Drill Worksheet, created to walk you through each step of making this flourished shoe.
The Flourished Athletic Shoe Calligraphy Drill Worksheet starts with an outline for you to trace or freehand draw. From there, you’ll move through three pages of guided instructions that show you where each stroke goes and how it flows.
Once you’ve looked through the steps, move on to the Practice Strokes section. These drills cover the four main strokes in the design and act as a warm-up. Think of it as stretching before a run; your hand will feel more relaxed, and the flourished shoe will flow much more easily.
Once you’ve warmed up with the practice drills, you’ll move on to the traceable shoe outlines. These guides will walk you through different parts of the design step by step. To start, you’ll follow the arrows to get a feel for the movements involved.
In the next traceable version of the shoe, you’ll focus on stroke contrast by trying to match stroke widths. Finally, you’ll fill in the basic shoe outline with your own versions of the strokes!
There are two reasons to make a shoe like this one. First, it makes for excellent pointed pen practice! You’ll find that the different stroke types and placements keep you engaged and challenged. Second, it’s a great motif for a card, mail art, or artwork that’s destined for an athlete.
