Tona Bell is an entrepreneur in Tampa whose creative mind inspires me! When I first walked into her shop, The Paper Seahorse, in 2016, I couldn’t get myself to stop gawking at all the engaging displays. Bits of papery goodness added flair to every nook. It’s still one of my favorite places ever, though The Paper Seahorse’s doors are closed for now due to the pandemic.
In 2017, I created seahorse-themed calligraphy drills to complement a collaboration with The Paper Seahorse. Our collaboration has since ended, but these seahorse calligraphy drills are so cool that Tona and I both agreed they need to be shared! So, for today’s blog post, I’m offering this free printable drills PDF to you.
Page one of these downloadable drills features simple marine-themed exercises to warm up your dip pen. On page two, you’ll find a more challenging (but still doable!) artistic seahorse drill. Once you’re comfortable making it, I encourage you to use it to jazz up your mail art, cards, and whatever else you want to create!
Like many businesses, The Paper Seahorse has had to adapt to the pandemic. For Tona, that meant shuttering the shop for now and focusing on sharing her love for paper online. TPS has a self-published creative magazine called Hippocampus, and Tona’s been collaborating with the likes of Michael Sull to run creative contests like this one.
While I know we’d all love to visit The Paper Seahorse in person, these free calligraphy drills offer a way to “travel” to sunny Tampa from your desk.
