Last November, brush pen calligraphy was a lifesaver when I personalized hundreds of copies of The Calligraphy Book. As I wrote, I was reminded just how quick and beautiful brush pen calligraphy can be. With just a fine-tipped brush pen and a few strokes, a name comes together effortlessly—no fuss, no elaborate setup. That’s what makes brush pen calligraphy so special: it allows you to create polished lettering in minimal time.

Among other things, brush pens are great for writing inside book covers.

Brush pen calligraphy often has a reputation for being overly cutesy. While you can create bubbly lettering with a brush pen, it’s a tool that’s also capable of producing elegant calligraphy with both polish and personality. That’s why I designed the Buoyant Brush Pen Calligraphy Worksheet—I want to teach you how to make stunning, classy calligraphy using a simple brush pen. Today, I’ve got a video tutorial and a comprehensive worksheet set for you, my fabulous TPK Premium people.

    But First—What Are Brush Pens?

Brush pens are flexible-tipped writing tools that mimic the look and feel of a traditional calligraphy brush but with the convenience of a pen. They allow for variable stroke width, meaning you can create thick and thin lines by adjusting the pressure you apply while writing or drawing.

In this short video, you can watch a brush pen in action.

There are two types of popular brush pens: fine-tipped brush pens and medium/large brush pens. Fine-tipped pens are great for small, detailed lettering and controlled strokes. Medium/large brush pens produce bolder strokes and are used for larger calligraphy styles. You should use a fine-tipped brush pen to fill out the Buoyant Brush Pen worksheet set. I recommend the Tombow Fudenosuke (affiliate link), but any fine-tipped pen—like a Pentel Sign brush pen, a Zebra Fude Sign brush pen, or a Kuretake Zig Fudegokochi—will work well, too.

You can use brush pen calligraphy for pretty much anything. Envelope calligraphy, quote artwork, greeting cards, signage for weddings/events, scrapbooking—whatever! Brush pens are extremely versatile, portable, and convenient.
