A (Free!) Watercolor Calligraphy Worksheet | The Postman's Knock
You can hone your watercolor calligraphy skills with this free printable worksheet!

When I first came across the concept of watercolor calligraphy in Molly Suber Thorpe’s Modern Calligraphy, I couldn’t wait to try it out myself! The prospect of writing with practically any color I wanted — without having to buy ink — totally appealed to me, and I loved the idea of ombré writing.

Woodland Watercolor Wreath Tutorials: Part III | The Postman's Knock
The watercolor calligraphy technique is vital to making whimsical watercolor wreaths like the one shown on this place card!

Once I gave watercolor calligraphy a try, I was smitten. It’s hard not to appreciate the artistic, elegant effect! Still — watercolor calligraphy isn’t the easiest technique in the world, which is why I decided to make a free worksheet to help you get the hang of it!

How to Use the Watercolor Calligraphy Worksheet

First, download the watercolor calligraphy worksheet for free by clicking here. Print it off on HP 32# laserjet paper, which is a paper that tolerates watercolor beautifully!

A (Free!) Watercolor Calligraphy Worksheet | The Postman's Knock
You can find the Watercolor Calligraphy Worksheet by clicking here.

Next, watch the video below. (If this video looks familiar, you may have seen it before! I filmed it last year for the A Video Crash Course on Watercolor Calligraphy article.)

Once you’ve watched the video, get out your favorite watercolor palette and moisten a blue shade of paint and a green shade of paint.

A (Free!) Watercolor Calligraphy Worksheet | The Postman's Knock
This is a first generation watercolor palette from Greenleaf & Blueberry. For watercolor palette recommendations, you can scroll down to the bottom of the All About Watercolor Paints article!

Give the water a minute or so to soak into the paint, then follow the directions in the worksheet to fill it out!

A (Free!) Watercolor Calligraphy Worksheet | The Postman's Knock
Don’t worry if your blue and green paints aren’t the same color as the ones that I’m using!

How This Worksheet Will Help You

I’ll tell you right now: you’re perfectly capable of learning how to create watercolor calligraphy without a worksheet. Still, when you’re trying to get the hang of a new technique, guided practice can be the key to mastery! The Watercolor Calligraphy Worksheet offers examples and writing opportunities that will help you to become proficient in this wonderful technique.

A (Free!) Watercolor Calligraphy Worksheet | The Postman's Knock

Once you’ve filled out the worksheet, I hope that you’ll try different color combinations! (Red and yellow are fun, or try turquoise and brown or purple and blue.) Hone your watercolor calligraphy skills on mail art, watercolor maps, or sketchbook journals! Like with anything, the more you use watercolor calligraphy, the more proficient you’ll become at using the technique.

Watercolor Envelope | The Postman's Knock
I love the color scheme of this watercolor Kaitlin Style calligraphy envelope!

Before I let you go, I want to offer a couple of tips to keep in mind while filling out the worksheet. First of all, be patient! Watercolors can be a bit of a wild card, so don’t get frustrated if you start off with some blobs or flow problems. Try to identify the issue, and work through it! Secondly, make sure you’re using a dip pen and nib combination that you’re comfortable with. Using tools that don’t intimidate you are a great way to set yourself up for success with this technique!

I hope that you enjoy the Watercolor Calligraphy Worksheet! If you enjoy filling it out, I’d love to see your progress on Instagram (tag @thepostmansknock or hashtag #thepostmansknock)! Of course, if you have questions, you’re more than welcome to ask in the comments. I’ll be glad to offer any insight that I can!

    Enjoy!!

I love how my perception of calligraphy is changed from the formal invitations and academic degrees to using it everyday and with many different types of mediums. Beautiful work with watercolors.

    Hi Lindsey!
I bought this worksheet and ordered some HP 32# laserjet paper to try everything out!
If I wanted to print words and then watercolor over it, is there another printer-friendly paper you can recommend that is heavier? I’m looking to use it for envelope liners/back of wedding invites. I was hoping to be able to do printing using my home laserjet printer on watercolor-friendly paper. Do you have any suggestions? I was going to try it out on felt/linen/canvas paper but I don’t know if they are ok to use. I was going to use your waterproof envelope suggestion on the separate blog as a back up for the felt/linen/canvas paper but if there is a watercolor-friendly paper right off the bat that is good, I would be sooooo grateful!!!

This is a ridiculously late answer, but I honestly would have a professional printing company handle it! It would probably be much more cost effective than home printing, and better quality. 🙂 I love printingforless.com.

I love the mixing of watercolour colours – each mixing point is unique, no two letters have the same colours and it makes calligraphy really stand out. I love mixing colours as if I were painting a landscape – for example a sky blue at the top of a letter and a brown or green at the bottom – not sure why, probably just me 🙂

    Great worksheet, thank you!

This is very interesting. Watercolor calligraphy has always interested me, but I can’t figure it out with a brush as a leftie. Hopefully this will help me to learn it.

The other day, I was thinking about sending out ho The other day, I was thinking about sending out holiday cards, and I immediately dismissed the thought with, “I have zero time to calligraph envelopes for those.” ✍️

... But is that true? I put it to the test for the latest article on the TPK Blog. Using some time-saving tricks I’ve learned over the years (like using a watery ink, a bouncy calligraphy style, and minimal pencil guidelines), I timed myself making three envelope concepts. Two of them took 5 minutes or less. The most time-intensive took 5 minutes, 30 seconds. The envelopes still turned out looking elegant, especially with the help of some artistic postage stamp collages. 💌

After I chose this music to accompany this reel, i After I chose this music to accompany this reel, it dawned on me: drawing a calligraphy medallion is like, well, Belle’s arc with the Beast.

At first, it’s a bit of a weird situation. Strange shapes, questionable structure, possibly some growling (à la “YOU WILL JOIN ME FOR DINNER. That’s not a request!”) when the inevitable ink smudge happens. You keep thinking, “I’m not sure why I’m doing this ... should I hop on Felipe and gallop away?” 🐎

But something shifts as the medallion starts to come to life. And when you finish that last detail and pull back, the music swells. Light bursts from your paper like it did from Beast’s digits as he transformed into a stunningly beautiful prince. ✨ You’re practically in a ballroom celebrating, and, wait, did your furniture just turn into an adoring crowd that’s celebrating your fortitude and skill?

(And now you know how my mind works 🧠 ... I love a good metaphor, no matter how weak it may be!)

To learn how to make a calligraphy medallion, just search for “calligraphy medallion” on the TPK site (link in bio). You’ll find both free Blog tutorials and detailed premium worksheets.

... I’ll show myself out now. 🙈
