In this workshop, we’ll cover next-level topics like how to create gold calligraphy, how to write with watercolors, writing with white ink, making fluid flourishes, and how to make perfectly centered calligraphy for projects like envelopes or quotes! We’ll also cover letter spacing and talk about how to create your own modern calligraphy styles.
The workshop will be held in Boulder, Colorado, at The Riverside (1724 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80302) from 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM. This 12-person workshop will be three hours long with a 10 minute break in the middle. To take this workshop, you need to be adept at using a dip pen — preferably both straight and oblique — and know how to form letters.

What to Bring
As an intermediate student, I know that you’ve already got the basics at home! I don’t want to clutter you up with duplicates. So, please bring your favorite dip pen(s) and nib(s). Note that sumi ink will be provided for you, and you can take it home if you would like.
What You’ll Take Home
You’ll leave with an assortment of incredible supplies that you won’t find at any other intermediate workshop, including:
- White pencil
- Finetec gold watercolor
- Bleed Proof White ink
- Rolling ruler (a.k.a. parallel glider)
- Paintbrush
- Watercolor set (12 colors)
- Workshop Worksheet
- Cleaning cloth
How to Know if You’re Intermediate
If you have taken a TPK in-person beginner workshop or The Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Online Course, you are qualified to take this workshop. If you are a beginner, I invite you to take the beginner’s workshop the day before the intermediate workshop. It’s perfectly okay to take workshops back to back! If you’ve never learned from TPK before, that’s okay! Here’s what I expect from intermediate students:
- Strong understanding of how to properly hold a calligraphy pen/form characters
- Adept at exerting balanced pressure on both tines of the nib
- Preference for and familiarity with a specific pen/nib combination (e.g. I love using the Brause EF66 nib in an oblique pen)
Location
This workshop will take place from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM at The Riverside (1724 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80302). Please plan on arriving a bit early so you can get situated before the workshop! I recommend parking at The Boulder Public Library, which is one block away from The Riverside.
Refund Policy
Please sign up for the workshop only if you’re sure you can attend! I understand, however, that things come up. If you need to cancel, you will receive a refund, but there will be a $25.00 restocking fee. Within four weeks of the workshop, I am unable to issue refunds.
Why Learn from TPK?
Calligraphy creation has been my calling since since 2012, and I maintain the #1 calligraphy site on the web. I have created commissions for Hollywood weddings and elegant soirées alike, and have been featured in Flow Magazine, Style Me Pretty, Buzzfeed, and Reader’s Digest. My passion for creating calligraphy is only equal to my enthusiasm for sharing my techniques with others: I love to teach, and I’d be honored to get to teach you!
