When I first set out to learn calligraphy in 2012, I grabbed a cheapie Speedball calligraphy starter kit at Michael’s (an art supply store). When I got home, I was so eager to enjoy my new hobby! Instead of loving calligraphy, however, I ran into problems galore: ink that bled, unwieldy nibs, and instructions that didn’t make sense. I concluded that calligraphy and I simply weren’t meant to be. A few months later, though, I found the right materials through experimentation and recommendations, and I fell in love! I’m writing today’s post because I want to make sure you have the proper materials for calligraphy success, too.

The Watercolor Illustrated Map eCourse is Here!

This watercolor illustrated map eCourse is a project that presents a challenge, takes up a sizable chunk of time, and allows you to mentally travel! Write With Glass: Introducing Glass Dip Pens
Glass dip pens are my new obsession. Ever since I received a shipment of these beauties last week, I’ve been using them to write letters, make mail art, and jot down everyday lists! The Osprey Scholar: A Frankenstein Dip Pen/Fountain Pen

For years, TPK readers have written me to ask if there’s a cartridge pen that delivers the same results as the dip pen. After all, the idea of writing calligraphy without a whole set-up (art water, ink, cleaning cloth, etc.) is appealing! Plus — let’s face it — dip pens aren’t incredibly travel-friendly. It’s kind of a whole thing to take them on the road. If a cartridge (i.e. fountain) pen can deliver stroke contrast, then why not use one of those instead of a dip pen?

Calligraphy Artwork Tutorial: Woman’s Silhouette
This calligraphy artwork was inspired by a bathroom remodel, which we’re currently in the middle of. As we get closer and closer to the finish line, I’ve been considering the art pieces to display! Works by Elisa Ancori and Sister Golden caught my eye, but I wanted to make my own art for the space. In considering what to create, I came up with this concept: tiny calligraphy that creates the outline of a woman’s back. I think it’s the perfect artwork for a bathroom, and I kept track of my progress to write this tutorial! Read on to discover how you can make it, too.
