How to Learn + Create Modern Calligraphy | The Postman's Knock

For several months now, I have intended to make a short video tutorial over how to learn and create modern calligraphy. There were plenty of days when I should have filmed the tutorial, but I kept putting it off. I mean, I wanted the video to be perfect: engaging, inspirational, and informative! I knew it should include a worksheet, and I hoped to spend a lot of time editing the video. Calligraphy is my thing, the activity I love to do, and I needed to reflect that with the quality and thoughtfulness of the How to Learn and Create Modern Calligraphy video!

About the How to Learn and Create Modern Calligraphy Video

Two weeks ago, I started working on a script for this video. Then, I developed a worksheet. The other day, I put on some makeup, took advantage of having a babysitter for Remy, and filmed the various video clips! Finally, I dedicated this week to stitching the clips together and searching for the perfect background music. The video that I ended up with, How to Learn and Create Modern Calligraphy, is exactly what I was going for. It’s colorful and upbeat, with quality information to get you started with creating modern calligraphy!

How to Learn + Create Modern Calligraphy | The Postman's Knock
You can download the free worksheet that I developed for the video by clicking here!

My hope is that How to Learn and Create Modern Calligraphy will inspire people who perhaps aren’t familiar with TPK to begin writing! It covers the basics of calligraphy: the proper supplies to buy, how to hold the pen, and some letter/word formations. The description below the video on YouTube also provides information on how to move forward with honing your calligraphy skills. Basically, it’s The Beginner’s Guide to Modern Calligraphy, but in video form. You could also think of it as a super summarized version of The Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Online Course!

If you’re already on your calligraphy journey, the video probably won’t surprise you with new information. I really did make it with newbies in mind! However, if you’re new to calligraphy, you might give it a watch. I’d love any comments and/or likes, too! I have to admit that I’m a bit green when it comes to using YouTube, but I’m trying to build a presence on the platform. Your help with that via comments/likes/shares would be sooo appreciated!

Thanks very, very much for reading (and, now, watching) TPK, and have a great weekend!

    Warmly,

I’d love to learn calligraphy, but I confess I’m put off by the fact that I’m a leftie over-writer, which really isn’t conducive to ink pen usage! I might just have to learn to do calligraphy with my right hand… That would be a real challenge!

I used to write the same as you, and was put off for so long! But if you want to do it, do it! It is totally achievable!! I would recommend learning to write under the line before learning to write with your right hand though 😉 You would be surprised how much progress you make (and quickly too) with practice.

Also Lindsey also has a post with advice for leftys. Well worth reading.
Sorry, I’m always miserable when I hear lefty’s thinking they can’t do it – it isn’t true.

Many people ask how I got started learning calligraphy, at which point I show them a video example of Lindsey’s work, and encourage them to follow her on all social media. The motivation she provides to keep practicing is invaluable. She has helped me discover art and how art and lettering work so beautifully together!

👯‍♀️ Fun fact: Jess and I met as roommates studying art history in Paris + Florence way before The Postman’s Knock or Greenleaf & Blueberry existed. Over the years, we’ve nicknamed ourselves Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum, Lucy and Ethel… you get the idea. That familiarity definitely comes through in our chats.

After eight years (and plenty of smudges), my chal After eight years (and plenty of smudges), my chalkboard finally got a makeover! This time, sketching out the design was so much easier thanks to my iPad + Procreate. Once the draft felt right, I used a grid method to bring it to life on the chalkboard. 🖊️✨ Curious how it all came together and find instructions for making your own chalkboard quote art? The iPad + the Procreate app = a total game change The iPad + the Procreate app = a total game changer for chalkboard design! ✨ Today I sketched out this chalkboard layout digitally, which is something I used to spend hours drafting with pencil and paper (with tons of erasing!). Obviously, there were a lot of elements that weren’t working here as I navigated the draft process; but it’s so easy to erase, re-size, or move elements within Procreate. The best part? Procreate gives me a sneak peek of how the chalk will actually look on the board. 😍

Now that the design is ready, I’m excited to bring it to life on the chalkboard itself. Stay tuned for Thursday’s tutorial on the TPK Blog! ✍️

I love watching project timelapses — like a comp I love watching project timelapses — like a complicated calligraphy or watercolor project coming together in a matter of seconds. A cleaning timelapse, then, is a no-brainer! My friend mentioned that she does these when she needs a little extra motivation to tidy up. I was totally feeling that this weekend, so I made a couple of these. The anticipation of knowing that I’d get to watch the room become neat in an instant was actually incredibly motivating. It’s the little things, right? 😉 #cleaningtimelapse #cleaning #tidyingup #neatandtidy
