How to Make Your Own Font

How would you like to see letters that *you* hand-wrote appear on your screen as you type? Making your own font is way easier than you think! To thank you for reading the TPK blog, I have also provided a free download of the font I made in the course of developing this tutorial –…

How to Make Your Own Font | The Postman's Knock

Note this blog post is called “How to Make Your Own Font” — not “How to Make Your Handwriting Into a Font”. It’s difficult to make a font that is true to your handwriting because letters in handwriting are often joined and spaced a bit erratically. However, it is ridiculously easy to make your own non-calligraphy font. All you need is a printer, a scanner, and a pen.

First, you’ll want to visit paintfont.com. It’s a simple website that provides you templates to create your font and subsequently turns these templates into a set of vector characters {which is what all fonts are}.

How to Make Your Own Font | The Postman's Knock

Click the tab that says “Select Character Set/Create Templates”. Make sure all the characters you want your font to include are in the “Selected Characters” box; you can add more characters by simply typing them in on the keyboard. Once you’re finished double-checking your characters, click “Create template(s)”. The site will then present you with a printable .pdf for download.

How to Make Your Own Font | The Postman's Knock

See how the .pdf file has faint gray characters? Those can serve as guidelines for you as far as the rough shape of your letters. My font is admittedly not too outrageous; I wanted it to be a traditional font with a sketch-like twist, so I essentially traced over the letters, but I didn’t fill in the thicker strokes.

How to Make Your Own Font | The Postman's Knock

You don’t have to make a font like this, though. As long as your letters are contained within the top line and the {bottom-most} bottom line, you’re golden! Have fun with it — it doesn’t take very long to make your own font, so it’s no biggie if you mess up and need to start over.

How to Make Your Own Font | The Postman's Knock

When you’re finished filling out the templates, you’ll scan all of your filled-out .pdfs into your computer.

How to Make Your Own Font | The Postman's Knock

Then, upload them back into paintfont.com by clicking the tab that says “Upload Filled Out Templates”. In less than a minute, you’ll be presented with your character set and a link to download!

How to Make Your Own Font | The Postman's Knock

I was actually surprised by how much I liked the font I made. I didn’t think that such a simple process could yield a font that I could use professionally … but it did! I used it to make wedding invitations:

Serafina Watercolor Suite | The Postman's Knock

And I used it throughout my printable wedding planner:

Printable Wedding Planner | The Postman's Knock

Now you can use it for whatever you want! Commercial projects, personal projects … be my guest; it’s free.

How to Make Your Own Font | The Postman's Knock

I hope you’ll also give making your own font a try! It’s actually pretty cool to be able to type with a set of characters that you yourself made; and, really, I’m not kidding — this is super easy. Give it a go and let me know what you think!

Thanks so much for reading! For more TPK magic, please visit TPK on Facebook and Instagram. I’ve got a few incredible posts and giveaways lined up for next month; stay tuned to win a watercolor set valued at over $225, an artisan-made calligraphy pen by Rodger’s Pen Box, and to learn all about watercolor paints in a beautifully written guest post by watercolor maker {and painter!} Jessica Moeller. If you can’t tell, I’m excited, and I hope you’ll love everything that’s coming up!

    Until next time!

    Hi Lindsey!

Thanks for the awesome tips! I have been dying to make my own calligraphy font, do you by chance have any tips about how to design a font with connecting letters and creating various glyphs? I have not been able to find a great tutorial about how to do so!

    Thanks!

      Hi Jessica!

It’s my impression that font creation featuring connecting letters is difficult because you have to design each letter such that it will connect to any other given letter. Doing so will require software that is especially for creating fonts — but I’m absolutely certain you could figure out how to do it if you dedicate a bit of time!

Hi! I love this tutorial and the font 🙂
I created my own font with another tool: MyScriptFont. I’ve found that it works better than PaintFont 🙂

Wow, a big thank you to you, Lindsey, for sharing and to the fabulous people at PaintFont…. A) for coming up with such a genius idea and B) for making it super simple and free!
I think it’s going to be a while before the novelty of making my own fonts will wear off…

I don’t think the novelty ever wears off! And I agree — I have no idea how there’s not a catch, but there’s not. It really is just fill out template, upload template, download font. I’m so glad that you’re enjoying using PaintFont!

That sounds like serendipity to me — I’m so glad that it solved your problem! Eventually, I’d love to learn how to use complicated font-making software, but for now this is a fabulous {and lightening fast} alternative. 😉

Oh — super, super easy! When I visited paintfont.com for the first time, I was going, ‘OK, what’s the catch? What are they trying to sell to me?” The truth appears to be … nothing. They’re just offering a simple algorithm right there on their website that converts your writing into a font — like the “Image Trace” feature in Adobe Illustrator {I think}. The only disadvantage is you can’t edit the font once you make it, but, eh, whatever. Mess-ups add charm. 😉

✨ One of the most beloved assignments from Lesso ✨ One of the most beloved assignments from Lesson 5 of Hand Lettering 101 was this playful project: design an artistic alphabet where no two letters look the same.

The idea? JUST PLAY. 🎨 I used watercolor and a paintbrush, but many students grabbed markers, pens, or anything colorful on hand. The results were incredible — @adriennelovesletters gave it her own flair, Isabel C. made it three times, and Laura M. created a stunning version too.
