    Gift-wrapped Calligraphy Kit

I compiled this list of DIY gift ideas because I, personally, enjoy receiving thoughtful DIY gifts. Give me something that you put time and effort into, and I’ll appreciate that more than anything! With that in mind, I usually give DIY gifts … because “do unto others”, right? Here’s a list of six of my favorites!

    1. Framed Photos or Artwork

Vintage framed family photos are so cool. There’s a certain elegance to them that enhances any home, which makes them the perfect gift for relatives. Just scan old photos, order prints from your local photo printer, then use the steps in the How to Frame Artwork on the Cheap tutorial to frame them!

6 Artistic DIY Gift Ideas | The Postman's Knock
This is my mother-in-law posing at her home in Lima, Peru, in the early 1960’s. How precious was she?! We are giving this to her as a gift this year.

If you don’t have access to old family photos, try framing a piece of artwork! You could also frame a calligraphy phrase that’s relevant/meaningful to the recipient.

    2. Handmade Stationery Set

If you have a friend or family member who enjoys snail mail, consider making them a stationery set! The set can include envelopes and paper cut to fit in those envelopes.

    Handmade Stationery Tutorial
These envelopes were made from a vintage magazine. The shiny surface is tough to write on, so I glued white strips of paper on the front!

I made the set pictured above over three years ago for a friend, and a few pieces of the set have made their way back to me over the years. It’s been fun to see that my friend enjoys using it!

You can learn how to make a personalized stationery set like this one in this tutorial.

    3. DIY Blank Book

I won’t lie: the bookbinding tutorial here on the TPK website — written by Jessica of Greenleaf & Blueberry — isn’t for the faint of heart. Still, it renders such lovely results that it’s worth a try! As Jessica says: “[You should] think of bookbinding like making croissants from scratch. It appears difficult when viewed in its entirety — croissant recipes are always so long! But if you take it step by step, you will end up with croissants.”

Bookbinding Tutorial | Greenleaf & Blueberry via The Postman's Knock
Think of the customization options for these book covers! You could use any fabric that you think will win the gift recipient’s heart.

If you choose to make DIY books as gifts, I would recommend dedicating an afternoon to it and making several! Everyone can use a blank book, whether it’s for taking notes, recording recipes, or bullet journaling.

    4. Bookmarks (With or Without Books)

If your recipient hasn’t jumped on the eReader train, give them bookmarks! This tutorial includes a printable sash for a stylish and personalized gift presentation.

DIY Bookmarks + Gift Label Printable | The Postman's Knock
You can learn how to make these four artistic bookmarks in this tutorial.

Of course, bookmarks are always appreciated when given with books. You can pick out a book or two that you think the recipient would like, then tuck the bookmark/s into the book/s!

    5. Papercut Silhouette Portrait

This style of artwork will especially appeal to those who appreciate a hipster-chic vibe! As long as you have a side profile photo of the subject and a packet of construction paper, you can make the tutorial.

Paper Profile Silhouette Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
You can learn how to make a papercut silhouette portrait like this one by clicking here. If you enjoy calligraphy, try writing the subject’s name under his or her portrait!

For extra visual appeal, you could frame the artwork with a mat and a refinished frame as described in the How to Frame Artwork on the Cheap tutorial!

    6. Calligraphy Starter Kit

I hesitated to include the calligraphy starter kit as a gift suggestion, but it is DIY in that you assemble it yourself. Plus, it’s just a great gift for anyone who you think would enjoy learning calligraphy! Trust me, a DIY kit is much more high-quality and useful than any commercial kit you will find on the market, and it should run you about $20-25.

The Ultimate Modern Calligraphy Starter Kit | The Postman's Knock
The secret to a great DIY starter kit? Nikko G nibs, high-quality paper, and a good instructional resource!

You can check out the Ultimate Modern Calligraphy Starter Kit post for details, but here’s a summary list of exactly what you should include in a DIY starter kit:

    • 2 Nikko G Nibs
    • Straight Calligraphy Pen
    • Sumi Ink
    • Container for Sumi Ink
    • 32# Laserjet Paper
    • Printable Calligraphy Worksheet – (If you’re purchasing a worksheet as a gift, consider giving a TPK gift certificate instead).
    • Cup for Water
    • Non-Fibrous Cloth (e.g. a Dinner Napkin)

6 Artistic DIY Gift Ideas | The Postman's Knock
I can’t say it enough: framed artwork makes a great gift!

I hope that you enjoyed this list of DIY gift ideas! I know that it’s a busy time of year, but if you plan on DIYing your gifts this year, try carving out a day to make them. Not only will you end up with meaningful gifts for your recipients, but the creative time will help you to relax!

This list begs the question: What’s your favorite DIY gift that you have ever made or received? I’d love to get some more ideas!

Have a great week, and thanks for reading!

    Warmly,

I would love to do a frame artwork as a gift. I had done some DIY watercolor cards before as a holiday greeting, my friend loves them.

I think my fav DIY gift was this metal horoscope thing my bestie made for Christmas almost 15 years ago! She bent a few steel wires to fashion a Pisces sign. It was very rustic looking.

Some recipes aren’t just instructions — they’re memories on a page. 💛 I spent some time illustrating one of my favorites, and it turned into the sweetest (literally) keepsake. Calligraphy, watercolor, and a little patience bring the story of a dish to life.

If you’d like to try illustrating your favorite recipe, too, I shared the full process (with helpful printables) on the TPK Blog — link in bio. ✨

You’ll find helpful PDFs and step-by-step instructions so you can follow along — or use the layout to bring one of your own favorite dishes to life.

Frame it as keepsake art, or give it as a thoughtful handmade gift this holiday season. 🎁

✨ One of the most beloved assignments from Lesso ✨ One of the most beloved assignments from Lesson 5 of Hand Lettering 101 was this playful project: design an artistic alphabet where no two letters look the same.

The idea? JUST PLAY. 🎨 I used watercolor and a paintbrush, but many students grabbed markers, pens, or anything colorful on hand. The results were incredible — @adriennelovesletters gave it her own flair, Isabel C. made it three times, and Laura M. created a stunning version too. (You can peek at more inside the TPK Premium Discord!)

If you’re ready to try this project yourself, you’ll find the Hand Lettering 101 eCourse waiting in the TPK Catalog. Just head to the link in my bio to be taken to the TPK website. 💌
