How to Make a Fabulous Hand-Lettered Birthday Card

Look at the photo above this paragraph. ^This^ is what happens when I suddenly find myself in a quiet house, with both my children at nursery school for the morning. I could not resist making my friend a fabulous hand-lettered birthday card! In today’s tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to make a card just like it. Disclaimer: a quick birthday card concept this is not. It took me about 1.5 hours to make. If you’re looking for something that comes together more efficiently, see other TPK birthday card tutorials.

How to Make a Fabulous Hand-Lettered Birthday Card: Video Tutorial

While this hand-lettered birthday card tutorial can be explained with text and photos, it’s easiest to understand via video. In the tutorial below, I’ll show you the process behind how to make today’s card. For clarification and supply links, I encourage you to read the written instructions below the video!

    1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you get started, you’ll need a handful of supplies. Find links and details under the photo.

Supplies Needed to Make a Fabulous Hand-Lettered Birthday Card

    • Black cardstock (affiliate link) – Folded into a 5″ x 7″ (12.7 cm x  17.75 cm) card
    • Lettering Composition Ruler Bundle
    • White Mechanical Pencil
    • Straight Pen fitted with Nikko G nib
    • Bleed Proof White Ink
    • Finetec Arabic Gold Watercolor Pan
    • Black Eraser
    • Scissors
    • Size 3-ish paintbrush

    2. Design a Layout

Next, use your white mechanical pencil and the 5″ composition ruler to make a layout. (I recommend watching the video tutorial for clarification on how to go about doing this.) Make sure that “BIRTHDAY” and the recipient’s name are the two largest words in the layout. For an up-close look at what your pencil draft might look like, feel free to download a scan of the pencil draft that I made for this project here.

    Hand-lettered birthday card draft
Finish up your layout with a few stars and dots to fill in the negative space.

    3. Add Ink

Once you’ve got your pencil draft, use your straight pen + Nikko G nib to fill in the letters with white ink and gold watercolor. This is my favorite step because it’s relaxing and satisfying, but be forewarned: it takes quite a while. You’ll need 45 minutes to an hour — if not longer — to complete it!

How to Make a Fabulous Hand-Lettered Birthday Card
Not sure how to write with gold watercolor? See this tutorial for instructions.

Once you finish adding ink, let everything dry. I recommend letting the piece sit out overnight just to be sure! Then, use a black eraser to get rid of your pencil guidelines. Once the guidelines are gone, it will be easier to evaluate if your piece needs anything else. Try different sizes of circles to give a “sparkling lights” sort of look.

How to Make a Fabulous Hand-Lettered Birthday Card

And that’s it! Once you finish, you’ll have a birthday card that will astonish your recipient with its festive, professional feel.

    On Lettering

As I was was creating this card, I realized that it requires a lot of handlettering. Don’t let that scare you! You can use TPK’s Premium Hand Lettering Worksheet Set to find step-by-step instructions over how to write both serif and sans serif characters. Then, feel free to modify what you learned to make new lettering styles and fabulous lettering layouts!

    TPK's Learn Hand-Lettering for a Latte Worksheet | The Postman's Knock
For today’s hand-lettered birthday card, I used mostly Roman lettering with just a bit of Sans Serif lettering (for “DEAR”). Both of these lettering styles are included in the Premium Hand Lettering Worksheet Set.

With some time, patience, and a willingness to embrace mistakes, I have no doubt you’ll be making several gorgeous hand-lettered birthday cards like the one featured today. And why stop there? From general quotes to envelope art, there are so many amazing lettering projects you can create! I hope that today’s article gives you the courage to start making beautiful lettering layouts today.

Thanks for reading/watching, and happy creating!

    Warmly,

I love everything about this project and this site. I have learned so much and my skills have increased by leaps and bounds.
Thank you. This card is spectacular!!
A suggestion: Sometimes I will do the card and then be stumped for an idea for the companion envelope or an idea for the card that matches the envelope highlighted. Some companion ideas are a slam-dunk, others not so much.
I know there are tons of flourish ideas etc. , but I’m thinking of an envelope/script that ties in perfectly with the card ….and a card/script idea that compliments the envelope presented . A note at the end of the project suggesting a script to be used for the companion piece would be very helpful. What would your envelope look like for this black, white and gold card?

Great idea! I like the pairing and will definitely keep that in mind for future videos/posts! For the black, white and gold card I would recommend pairing it with similar designs in the same color scheme! Maybe use slightly less flourishing or something along those lines! I believe in you that you can create something great!

I recently received the composition ruler and just love it. I’ve been playing around with it almost constantly. This tutorial is fantastic, along with the video & so helpful. And so gracious to share your rough draft with us as a guide. It’s like, ok, I have this thing, now what? The tutorial really helped me jumpstart learning how to use the composition ruler & a guide for 2 birthday cards I’m doing for March. Thank you so much Lindsay!

After eight years (and plenty of smudges), my chal After eight years (and plenty of smudges), my chalkboard finally got a makeover! This time, sketching out the design was so much easier thanks to my iPad + Procreate. Once the draft felt right, I used a grid method to bring it to life on the chalkboard. 🖊️✨ Curious how it all came together and find instructions for making your own chalkboard quote art? The iPad + the Procreate app = a total game change The iPad + the Procreate app = a total game changer for chalkboard design! ✨ Today I sketched out this chalkboard layout digitally, which is something I used to spend hours drafting with pencil and paper (with tons of erasing!). Obviously, there were a lot of elements that weren’t working here as I navigated the draft process; but it’s so easy to erase, re-size, or move elements within Procreate. The best part? Procreate gives me a sneak peek of how the chalk will actually look on the board. 😍

Now that the design is ready, I’m excited to bring it to life on the chalkboard itself. Stay tuned for Thursday’s tutorial on the TPK Blog! ✍️

I love watching project timelapses — like a comp I love watching project timelapses — like a complicated calligraphy or watercolor project coming together in a matter of seconds. A cleaning timelapse, then, is a no-brainer! My friend mentioned that she does these when she needs a little extra motivation to tidy up. I was totally feeling that this weekend, so I made a couple of these. The anticipation of knowing that I’d get to watch the room become neat in an instant was actually incredibly motivating. It’s the little things, right? 😉 #cleaningtimelapse #cleaning #tidyingup #neatandtidy
