Description

As far as supplies go, I recommend starting the course with a pencil, ruler, light-colored paper, and any pen. As you move through the lessons, you may find that you want to acquire other materials. For now, though, you can keep it simple!

TPK Premium members have access to this course through one week after the final lesson discussion (August 12, 2025). At that point, the course will be publicly released for an enrollment cost of $50, which Premium members can pay to retain access. Premium Plus members will enjoy continuous access to this course and all other TPK online courses as well. Here’s the lesson release schedule:

Wednesday, June 18th: Lesson 1

This lesson asks you to create a self-assessment assignment, which you’ll compare to your work after five weeks of taking the course. Then, we’ll go over basic definitions (calligraphy, typography, and hand lettering). Next, you’ll learn all about the vocabulary that you need in order to understand characters and lettering. Finally, we’ll go over all of the tools and supplies that can be useful to you as you hone your lettering skills. The Lesson 1 discussion will take place on Tuesday, June 24th.

Wednesday, June 25th: Lesson 2

In this lesson, we’ll go over basic block lettering forms. We’ll start with serif and sans serif, then move on to variations. Get ready to work hard and spend some quality time with your pen and paper! The Lesson 2 discussion will take place on Tuesday, July 1st.

Wednesday, July 9th: Lesson 3

In this lesson, we’ll cover script lettering and adding script elements to block lettering. Again, this lesson will require you to write and practice along with me. The Lesson 3 discussion will take place on Tuesday, July 15th.

Wednesday, July 16th: Lesson 4

In this lesson, you’ll learn about kerning, layouts, and how to design effective compositions. We’ll cover essential concepts like balance, spacing, and visual hierarchy, then walk through how to plan and build your own layouts step by step. The Lesson 4 discussion will take place on Tuesday, July 22nd.

Wednesday, July 23rd: Lesson 5

This lesson focuses on impactful effects to help your lettering stand out. We’ll dabble in 3D lettering, ombré, color effects, intertwining letters, and adding illustrated elements. The Lesson 5 discussion will take place on Tuesday, July 29th.

Wednesday, July 30th: Lesson 6 (Final Lesson)

In this final lesson, you’ll re-create the piece you made in Lesson 1. It’s your chance to apply everything you’ve learned — from letterform refinement to layout and effects — to the same words, and see just how much you’ve grown. You’ll end the course with a meaningful visual before-and-after that shows off your new skills and style. The final lesson discussion will take place on Tuesday, August 5th.
