This is a traditional iron gall that starts off gray and blackens over time. Give it up to 24 hours to reach a true black tone! (I especially love this ink paired with gold watercolor.)

I’m proud to offer you the best iron gall ink I have ever tried! Iron gall ink is a traditional ink that has the perfect liquid viscosity to make teeny-tiny upstrokes and thick, rich downstrokes. It’s been used for centuries and was a favorite of monks and the Vikings (learn more here). Here are some things to note about Rousy iron gall ink:

  • Simon Rous of scribblers.co.uk is the mastermind behind Rousy iron gall ink’s formula. He ships me a concentrate, then I add filtered Rocky Mountain water and decant the ink into jars.
  • Iron gall ink starts off as a gray tone, then it undergoes an oxidization process on your paper to turn into a gorgeous dark black.
  • This ink is best for calligraphers who have a good grasp on the foundations of calligraphy. It is easy to use, but beginners might find it difficult to manage since it’s so watery.
  • I strongly recommend adding this ink to your collection! It’s my favorite black ink ever because it adds elegance and class to any type of calligraphy.

Description

In case you’re wondering: yes! Iron gall ink is more acidic than many of its inky peers, and it may “eat” your nib a bit quicker than other inks. As per usual, make sure you have a couple of extra nibs on hand to use when your nib goes kaput. I promise: the slightly increased wear on your nibs is worth it. You’re going to love this ink!

    I love this ink!!!!! I agree with others review as it relates to the thin upstroke lines. My skills are progressing and I think I am somewhere between a Beginner and Intermediate. I used a Brause EF66 nib. It is a watery consistency but it is worth trying. Don’t be afraid… I had fun with flourishes and when it dries, it is a beautiful black color. Thank you Lindsey for introducing us to iron gall ink!

    Lindsey, thank you for choosing to carry this exquisite ink! It just arrived, and I raced to use it immediately, with totally satisfying results. Having just started practicing calligraphy, I admit to a wee bit of despair over not progressing, but this ink apparently provided a tipping point. Using the Brause EF66 with copperplate lettering, I finally achieved a thin upstroke and fluid letters. The ink is so responsive, allowing me to feel that subtle meeting point of ink and paper. I also love how it starts off pale and ends up dark, reminding me of dyeing with indigo; the magic of natural pigments! Thank you (as always) for your beautiful postings and generosity in all things.     I am a huge fan of iron gall ink. This one is special as it is quite water resistant. It allows me to pen very thin upstrokes. It has the classic thin consistency of iron gall ink and dries to a beautiful soft black.
