I started TPK with a bottle of India ink, a dip pen, a paintbrush, and a set of 12 Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolors. I’m convinced that Cotman is the best beginner watercolor set out there! Here are some of the things I love about this set of 12 half pans:
- Its colors easily blend together to make virtually any additional color you want
- The smooth, nicely pigmented colors make for enjoyable creation and easy watercolor calligraphy
- These colors provide a cost-effective gateway into the wonderful world of watercolors

Description
Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolors are student grade, which means that some of the pigments used to make certain colors are synthetic substitutes. These substitutions are made to keep costs low, as genuine pigment costs can be incredibly expensive! A trade-off of using student grade watercolors is they don’t quite have the same vibrancy or depth as artist grade paints. But, for a fraction of the price, these are fabulous to start off with. This set is what got me hooked on watercolors! After three years of using it, I moved on to an artist grade set from Greenleaf & Blueberry. I still have a special place in my heart for Cotman, which is why I’ve chosen to stock these colors.
This Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolors – Set of 12 includes the following colors:
- Lemon Yellow Hue
- Cadmium Yellow Hue
- Cadmium Red Hue
- Rose Madder Hue
- Ultramarine
- Prussian Blue
- Viridian Hue
- Sap Green
- Yellow Ochre
- Indian Red
- Burnt Umber
- Lamp Black
