Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolors are student grade, which means that some of the pigments used to make certain colors are synthetic substitutes. These substitutions are made to keep costs low, as genuine pigment costs can be incredibly expensive! A trade-off of using student grade watercolors is they don’t quite have the same vibrancy or depth as artist grade paints. But, for a fraction of the price, these are fabulous to start off with. This set is what got me hooked on watercolors! After three years of using it, I moved on to an artist grade set from Greenleaf & Blueberry. I still have a special place in my heart for Cotman, which is why I’ve chosen to stock these colors.
