I love hand-drawn arrows so much that I used them as letter dividers in the Circus Lettering Exemplar.
Tips for Creating Hand-Drawn Arrow Designs
Every great arrow starts with a pencil draft line. You’ll begin any arrow with a faint pencil line, which will give you a good foundation to work off of. (It’s easiest to draw straight lines with the help of a ruler.)
Once you have your pencil lines, you can draw over them with a pen. I alternate between using a dip pen + ink and gel pens (like Gelly Roll) to draw arrows.
If you plan to create several arrows side by side, try mixing up the styles! The Steampunk Arrows correspond beautifully with the Universe Arrows in the envelope below.
You can mix and match just about any combination of arrows on the printable.
While arrows can serve as freestanding artwork, I like them best on mail art. Arrows symbolize motion, so they provide a nod to the distance the envelope will travel. Furthermore, arrows always serve as the perfect contrast to whimsical calligraphy like the Kaitlin Style address below:
Regardless of whether you consider yourself an artist or not, I hope you’ll give at least a few of the hand-drawn arrow designs a try.
Thanks very much for reading, and enjoy the printable!
