If you enjoy brush pen calligraphy, then you probably have practiced with the original TPK free brush pen calligraphy worksheet. With over 75,000 downloads, that worksheet is one of the most popular freebies on this website! Still — it’s been two years since its release, so it’s high time to provide you with an alternative. Today, you’ll find a new free brush pen worksheet in a “Neat Slant” style.
You can download the new brush pen worksheet by clicking here. The worksheet is three pages long, and it starts with a little bit of stroke practice. First, you’ll write downstrokes. Remember to take advantage of the side of the pen’s tip in order to make nice, thick strokes!
Next comes upstrokes and horizontal strokes. The secret to those strokes is — first and foremost — to relax! Take a deep breath and wiggle your shoulders a bit. Next, barely touch the pen’s tip to the paper and let your hand glide upwards. If your strokes aren’t perfect, don’t worry about it: this is just practice! With every stroke you make, you get a little bit closer to reaching your desired skill level.
You’ll end the first page by filling in a couple of drills. These drills will help you work on pen control and making curves.
The next two pages of the worksheet provide alphabet practice. First, you’ll observe a line of letters. Use the blank lines under those letters to try and write them yourself. Take heed of the slant lines: they exist to help you achieve a consistent slant.
First of all, this brush pen worksheet is very basic. That means it doesn’t walk you through letter formations or when to pick up your pen. If you’re new to brush pen calligraphy, you will find the Kaitlin Style Premium Brush Pen Calligraphy Worksheet Set very helpful. It teaches you exactly how to use a brush pen and provides 100+ pages of practice.
If you already know how to use a brush pen, however, then the freebie offered in today’s post is perfect for you! I would recommend printing the worksheet out on 32# laserjet paper, which offers a smooth writing surface. Try rotating the paper (counter-clockwise for righties, clockwise for lefties) in order to easily achieve the nice, right-leaning slant.
While I used Tombow markers to fill out this worksheet set, any brush pen will do! Pigma brush pens are a favorite of mine, as well as Faber-Castells. If you’re not ready to invest in brush pens quite yet, try writing with ordinary markers. Makers such as those made by Crayola are super cost-effective and allow you to achieve great stroke contrast!
I invite you to experiment with ways to use the “Neat Slant” worksheet that accommodate your learning style! For example, if you need to trace over the letters, feel free to place a thin piece of paper over the worksheet and do that. You are welcome to print off this worksheet as many times as you need to! The more you practice, the more you’ll improve.
