• Introducing the New Amy Style Calligraphy Worksheet

I’m sure that you know the feeling of creating something that you’re proud of. Then, time passes, and you realize: “Wow, I really could have done that better.” That’s exactly how I felt with the Amy Style Calligraphy Worksheet Set. When I first released the set in 2015, I thought it was just great! I’d done it to the best of my ability, and that’s all that a person can ask for, really.

Three years have passed, however, and in that time, I’ve designed many more worksheet sets and taught 20+ in-person calligraphy workshops. As a result, I’ve learned much more about the best way to teach, which is why I wanted to re-make the Amy Style Calligraphy Worksheet and the optional supplementary video course. I recently finished both (you can find the worksheet here and the video course here), and I’m excited to share with you why they’re special!

A Brief Introduction to Amy Style Calligraphy

On the TPK website, you’ll notice five different styles of calligraphy (this article provides an overview of all the styles). Amy Style calligraphy was the third style that I developed, and it’s been a learner favorite ever since.

This envelope is a lovely example of Amy Style calligraphy.

On an aesthetic level, Amy Style calligraphy boasts legibility and neatness. It’s pleasing to look at because it’s so clean and easy to read! As far as its creation is concerned, I’ve long recommended it to beginners because it lacks the right-leaning slant of so many calligraphy styles. There’s no need for an oblique pen or severe rotation of your paper!

If you’ve never picked up a dip pen before, you can work your way through the Amy Style worksheet set. Many calligraphy beginners have done just that! However, if you can start by completing The Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Online Course, that would be ideal (and will save you frustration with figuring out calligraphy basics).

If you can, take the Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Online Course before filling out this or any worksheet. If that’s not realistic for your budget or time constraints, start by reading The Beginner’s Guide to Modern Calligraphy article.

This calligraphy worksheet set presupposes a very basic knowledge of how to use a calligraphy pen. It includes three sections: the Core Worksheet, Intensive Alphabet Practice, and Intensive Word Practice. You can read exactly what is included in all three sections in the worksheet product description (and see more photos), but I’ll provide a brief overview here:

    1. Core Worksheet

The Amy Style Calligraphy Core Worksheet is 31 pages long. It begins by easing you into the style using the faux calligraphy technique. Next, you’ll use your dip pen to practice writing letters. There’s a lot to fill out, so give yourself a couple of days! After you master letters, you’ll move on to the real challenge: connecting them to make words.

Lots of quality word practice will help you to make lots of quality calligraphy projects!

    2. Intensive Alphabet Practice

People have different styles of learning, and many people (myself included) benefit from lots and lots of repetition. I designed the Intensive Alphabet Practice pages to help you master your particular “problem letters”. For example, if you’re experiencing frustration writing the letter “S”, you can print off the “S” Intensive Alphabet Practice page (21). That printout will allow you to write — and write … and write — that “S” until you feel comfortable with it!

You can find additional practice for any Amy Style letter, number, or symbol in the Amy Style Intensive Alphabet Practice packet.

    3. Intensive Word Practice

The Intensive Word Practice packet operates under the same concept as the Intensive Alphabet Practice. If there’s a word in the worksheet that you have trouble writing, you print off that page of the Intensive Word Practice and write that word over and over again. By the end of an Intensive page, you’ll have the hang of it!

The Intensive Word Practice section gives you plenty of extra practice writing out common words!

The Amy Style Calligraphy Video Course

When I made the first version of the Amy Style Video Course in 2015, I focused a lot on calligraphy basics. Those basics are now covered in the Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Online Course, which freed me up to hone in exclusively on Amy Style Calligraphy in the new version of the video course.

You may be wondering what an exclusive focus on the calligraphy style versus calligraphy techniques means. Basically, instead of teaching you calligraphy techniques like how to hold a pen or clean a nib, I can cover more advanced topics like how to add flourish to your Amy Style calligraphy or how to deal with that pesky Amy Style “S”. I think that the crown jewel of the video course is Lesson 5, a detailed unit over how to make and use a “centering cheat sheet” to make perfectly centered Amy Style envelopes.

    Free Amy Style Exemplar

I like to provide an (extremely) budget-friendly alphabet exemplar counterpart for every worksheet set that I release. You can find the free Amy Style Exemplar by clicking here.

Access Instructions for Current Amy Style Calligraphy Owners

If you own the previous version of the Amy Style Printable Calligraphy Worksheet (or the worksheet and the video course), you have been “grandfathered” in to the new version(s). “Grandfathers” will receive an email with updated download links this weekend. If you don’t receive an email by Monday, June 17th, please email me at [email protected]. You will also be able to access the new set from your account by Monday if you were signed in at the time of purchasing the Amy Style worksheet or video course.

Buying a worksheet from the TPK site does not automatically create you an account. You must click on the checkbox at checkout for the account to be created. Please note that the newsletter and the TPK website use two different systems, so receiving this blog post in your email does not mean that you have an account on TPK. The best way to test whether or not you created an account on TPK is to try to login here. If you can’t log in, try to change your password. After trying that, if the system says you don’t have an account, you don’t have an account.

If you purchased the worksheet but don’t see it in your account and/or you just created an account, shoot me an email and I can move the order to your account. Providing me with the order number saves me lots of time!

Note that you should have the latest version of your PDF reader to properly open the calligraphy worksheet set. Many people use Adobe Reader, which you can download for free by clicking here. If you have an outdated PDF reader, you will have issues viewing or printing the worksheet files.

If you have any questions about this new calligraphy worksheet set, video course, or Amy Style calligraphy in general, please feel free to comment! Otherwise, I sincerely hope that you enjoy these new learning tools.

Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks very much for reading TPK!

    Warmly,
