Three years ago, I decided to try making a calligraphy worksheet. It was the first worksheet that I ever made, and I used a calligraphy style that I called “Flourish Formal”, a style with ample curls and embellishments. Last year, I started to notice just how outdated the worksheet was … it just didn’t measure up to the quality of later worksheet sets, both functionally and aesthetically.
For the past few months, I have been working to make sure that this calligraphy worksheet is the best yet! Today, I am very pleased to introduce you to the all new, vastly improved Flourish Formal Calligraphy Worksheet set. It’s a gorgeous set that will teach you how to create an artistic and awesome calligraphy style!
About Flourish Formal Style Calligraphy
Flourish Formal Style calligraphy was the first calligraphy style that I ever developed. It was intended to appeal to elegant wedding clients, and I used it on several projects like this 2014 wedding suite.
Over the past three years, the style has become more polished. Clean lines, confident curves, and connected strokes are now a hallmark of Flourish Formal calligraphy.
I love using this style to enhance formal events, but it can also dress down. If you’re in the mood to make playful mail art with a dose of elegance, Flourish Formal Style calligraphy is a great go-to!
In short, the Flourish Formal is an impressive calligraphy style that you can use for any project. Wedding envelopes, place cards, calligraphy art for your home, and casual envelopes for pen pals will all benefit from it!
Features of This Worksheet Set
This calligraphy worksheet set includes three sections: the Core Worksheet, Intensive Alphabet Practice, and Intensive Word Practice. You can read exactly what is included in all three sections in the worksheet product description, but I’ll provide a brief overview here! The Core Worksheet will teach you everything you need to know to get started. In it, you’ll begin with faux calligraphy (calligraphy created with a regular pen), then transition into using a dip pen.
This worksheet set features something new as far as TPK worksheets go: warm up drills. Before you start writing letters, you will fill out the drills section to get the hang of different strokes and nib pressure exertion.
Next, you’ll practice letters and words.
You’ll finish up by learning about flourishing. The “Flourishing Tips and Techniques” section of the worksheet provides you with instructions and ideas for personalizing your letters with embellishments.
If you have trouble writing any letters, you have the opportunity for plenty of extra practice in the Intensive Alphabet Practice section. This section provides you with guided practice so you can really get the hang of writing “problem” letters!
The Intensive Word Practice offers the same opportunity, but with words. Faint guidelines will help you to write a word over and over until you’re comfortable creating it on your own!
What You Need to Get Started
To learn Flourish Formal Style calligraphy, you’ll need a few supplies. They are:
- Flourish Formal Style Calligraphy Premium Worksheet Set
- Straight calligraphy pen or an oblique calligraphy pen (I prefer an oblique for this style, but if you’re new to calligraphy, use a straight pen.)
- Nikko G nib (the Nikko G is the best beginner nib)
- Sumi or India ink
- Water (to wash ink off your nib every minute or so)
- Non-fibrous cloth (to dry off your nib after you dip it in your water)
If this is your first time using a dip pen, read The Beginner’s Guide to Modern Calligraphy before you get started. It will teach you the basics like how to write with a dip pen! (Later this year, I will be adding a video course to this worksheet set. For now, though, The Beginner’s Guide is a good place to start.)
Like all TPK calligraphy worksheet sets, the Flourish Formal Style is intended for printing at home. The very best paper to print off this worksheet — and any other printable worksheets — on is 32# laserjet paper! Note that you do not need a laserjet printer to print on laserjet paper.
Other Things to Note
First of all, there is a 2-page free, very basic version of the Flourish Formal Style calligraphy worksheet available. It is essentially an exemplar, and you can download it by clicking here.
As I promised in Tuesday’s blog post and on social media, if you own the previous version of the Flourish Formal Style Calligraphy Premium Worksheet, you have been “grandfathered” in to this new worksheet set. If you have an account on TPK and you already own the previous Flourish Formal Style worksheet set, you will find the new Flourish Formal Style materials there! If you own the previous premium Flourish Formal worksheet but do not have an account, send me an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) letting me know. I’m more than happy to send you a new order confirmation email with download links! I can also put all the files you have ever ordered into an account if you create one.
Finally, I’d like to add that you should have the latest version of your PDF reader (the program that opens PDF files on your computer) to properly view the worksheet set. Many people use Adobe Reader, which you can download for free by clicking here. If your PDF reader is outdated, you may have printing issues or notice that there are some letters missing in the worksheet set!
If you have any questions about this new worksheet set or Flourish Formal Style calligraphy, please feel free to comment! Otherwise, I sincerely hope that you enjoy this new learning tool. If you have any feedback as you are using it, I’d love to hear what you have to say.
Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks very much for reading TPK!
