Printable Valentine’s Day Card + Envelope

    January 30, 2015

Free Printables, Printable Envelope Templates, Printable Goodies, Tutorials, Valentine’s Day

I have to admit: I think these are much more awesome than the “Frozen” themed Valentine’s Day cards that will be circulating this year. Plus, you can totally morph the card and envelope pair into whatever you want it to be: a birthday card, a “just because” card … anything, really. I’m excited to see…

Printable Valentine's Day Card and Envelope | The Postman's Knock

This printable Valentine’s Day card and envelope set is pretty much the “little black dress” of printable cards and envelopes. You can use the card and/or envelope for anything, and they’re both always in style. However, since Valentine’s Day is the holiday that is steadily creeping upon us, I’m pitching them as Valentine’s Day pieces.

In order to create this card and envelope set, you’ll need to print off the templates, which you can get for free here.

Printable Valentine's Day Card and Envelope | The Postman's Knock

Both the card and envelope are black and white, ready for you to color in/paint/do nothing to as you see fit. I had considered filling them in with color for you; but then I realized there are so many color possibilities that I don’t want to limit you at all!

To create the card, cut it out of the paper you printed it on, then gather your coloring supplies. I have chosen to color it in with watercolors … mainly because we are still visiting Hernán’s parents in Peru and watercolors are all I brought with me!

Printable Valentine's Day Card and Envelope | The Postman's Knock

With the flowers, you can paint them all one color or paint each one a different color. Please, do whatever you feel like doing! I’m a sucker for turquoise, so here I go:

Printable Valentine's Day Card and Envelope | The Postman's Knock

And, of course, no turquoise is complete without a shocking red.

Printable Valentine's Day Card and Envelope | The Postman's Knock

You may end up with something like the image below {or not; that’s the beauty of individual creativity}. Notice that I left the leaves white; I can’t help but love the contrast of intense color with stark whites.

Printable Valentine's Day Card and Envelope | The Postman's Knock

At this point, you’ll want to fill in the center of your card. As you can see below, I’ve taken a cue from the watercolor lettering post and written a sans serif “LOVE” with a heart. Its simplicity complements the colorful, intricate flowers.

Printable Valentine's Day Card and Envelope | The Postman's Knock

However, I hope you’ll feel free to fill in the center with whatever you want. I was thinking that for Valentine’s Day, one of these quotes would be cool to write in the middle, perhaps in faux calligraphy?

Once you’re finished with your card, you’ll want to move on to your envelope. The assembly process will be the exact same as the printable mail art envelope templates in the TPK catalog. It is up to you whether you want to leave the flowers black and white …

Printable Valentine's Day Card and Envelope | The Postman's Knock

Or color them in to match the card.

Printable Valentine's Day Card and Envelope | The Postman's Knock

Of course, you can write the address however you’d like. I, personally, used Kaitlin style calligraphy because I wanted to write quickly but elegantly.

Printable Valentine's Day Card and Envelope | The Postman's Knock

The dimensions for the card are 5 1/2″ x 3 3/4″ {14 cm x 9.5 cm} folded, and the envelope is 5 3/4″ x 4 1/8″ {14.6 cm x 10.5 cm} assembled. Make sure you don’t select the “fit to page” option when printing, or the dimensions will be affected! Again, you can click here to download both the printable Valentine’s Day card and envelope pair.

I’d love to see what you do with these via social media! You can always share on Facebook, or hashtag/tag @thepostmansknock on Instagram. Feel free to print out as many or as few as you want! These templates are my Valentine’s Day gift to you, and I hope you’ll get a lot of mileage out of them. Enjoy!

    Warmest wishes always,

Can you print this on regular printer paper or if watercoloring will it warp? My drawing paper and watercolor paper are slightly bigger than my printer paper and won’t fit printer or should I get out my scrapbook cutter thing and trim down one of my better papers?
    Thanks for your website !

      Hi Debby!

If I know I’m going to use watercolors, I cut a better paper down to size 8.5″x11″ {specifically, Strathmore 70 lb. drawing paper}. It’s a heavy enough paper that the watercolor doesn’t warp it!

However, if you choose to use colored pencils, crayons, or another dry media like that, printer paper should work just fine!

      I hope this helps! 🙂

What a great surprise to find this little gem in my email! I was just thinking about Valentine’s Day cards & gearing up to get a few made that I could incorporate calligraphy into. Problem solved! I’m so appreciative of all the beautiful work that you not only share with all of us, but then provide us with these gorgeous templates to make our own. You have been such a mentor for me these past few months. I feel very fortunate to have found your website. Many Thanks!!

I am so glad, Ruth! I really like the fact that these cards allow people to customize them. My line of thought was, you know, for some people, a friendship quote is more appropriate than “LOVE”; and furthermore, the customization aspect allows for use any time of year for any occasion. 🙂

It makes me so happy to hear that you are benefiting from the blog! I am really lucky that creative and kind people like you read it, so I can truly say that it’s all my pleasure. Thank you a million!

Just wanted to share something with you. I was contracted today for my very first paying job addressing envelopes. Thanks yet again for everything. Now if I only knew how to price out my work. Any advice you care to throw my way?

Please excuse my tardiness in congratulating you! Between travels to and from Peru and Kansas, I have been a very poor responder. :-/ But: I want to say congratulations!! This is going to be so fun for you!

For pricing, I’d write out one sample envelope and time yourself so you can estimate just how much time the whole job will take you. Be sure and consider the time it will take to draw guidelines/erase guidelines (if applicable), and also how long it will take you to double-check the addresses. Then multiply that time estimate by a factor of 1.3 (to allow for mess-up re-dos), and you’ll have a good time estimate. Think about how much you would want to be paid per hour to address the envelopes, and give that pricing to the client. 🙂

My biggest mistake with envelope addressing was always underpricing. I love creating envelope calligraphy (especially with a good Netflix movie playing and some hot tea at hand), but you’ve got to make sure you’re being paid enough to do it. So: make sure you’re getting compensated for your time! Your work is so worth it!

Such beautiful work and so sweet of you to share it with everyone free of charge! I especially love that it’s in black and white so we can taylor the color to our individual needs/tastes. Now I’m wondering if watercolor paper would gum up our printer…

Also, waiting on pins and needles for the typography tutorial! 🙂

Our printer at home refuses to accommodate any paper over 70 lb., so of course 140 lb. watercolor paper is out of the question! My workaround, though, is to take 8.5″x11″ pieces of watercolor paper to FedEx and use the self-serve printers, which will print on 140 lb. paper. Each black and white copy is $0.10, which really isn’t bad! If you’ve got a FedEx/Kinkos that you can go to, give that a try!

Gosh; I have suffered an epic deadline fail with the Hand Lettering for a Latté! I sincerely thought we’d have much more free time at Hernán’s parents’ house; but for whatever reason we ended up out on the town every day. Oh, well! I’m planning on working on it more today {we are in the middle of a super long layover in Miami}, and all this week. It should be a really good one!

Thanks, Sally! We made it home just fine. 🙂 Of course, American Airlines still has one of our bags {though they’re not sure where it is}, and also of course, it’s the bag with my favorite RPB oblique in it. Ugh! I am passing on your kind sentiments to that suitcase: I hope it has a safe and speedy return! 😉

The other day, I was thinking about sending out ho The other day, I was thinking about sending out holiday cards, and I immediately dismissed the thought with, “I have zero time to calligraph envelopes for those.” ✍️

... But is that true? I put it to the test for the latest article on the TPK Blog. Using some time-saving tricks I’ve learned over the years (like using a watery ink, a bouncy calligraphy style, and minimal pencil guidelines), I timed myself making three envelope concepts. Two of them took 5 minutes or less. The most time-intensive took 5 minutes, 30 seconds. The envelopes still turned out looking elegant, especially with the help of some artistic postage stamp collages. 💌

For clear step-by-step tutorials detailing how to make these envelopes and sourcing pretty postage, visit the TPK Blog (link in bio, then navigate to “Blog”)!

After I chose this music to accompany this reel, i After I chose this music to accompany this reel, it dawned on me: drawing a calligraphy medallion is like, well, Belle’s arc with the Beast.

At first, it’s a bit of a weird situation. Strange shapes, questionable structure, possibly some growling (à la “YOU WILL JOIN ME FOR DINNER. That’s not a request!”) when the inevitable ink smudge happens. You keep thinking, “I’m not sure why I’m doing this ... should I hop on Felipe and gallop away?” 🐎

But something shifts as the medallion starts to come to life. And when you finish that last detail and pull back, the music swells. Light bursts from your paper like it did from Beast’s digits as he transformed into a stunningly beautiful prince. ✨ You’re practically in a ballroom celebrating, and, wait, did your furniture just turn into an adoring crowd that’s celebrating your fortitude and skill?

(And now you know how my mind works 🧠 ... I love a good metaphor, no matter how weak it may be!)

To learn how to make a calligraphy medallion, just search for “calligraphy medallion” on the TPK site (link in bio). You’ll find both free Blog tutorials and detailed premium worksheets.

... I’ll show myself out now. 🙈
