When you set out to write long calligraphy quotes, you can count on spending the bulk of your time drawing guidelines and making a draft. Not anymore! Today, I’ll show you a shortcut for writing a perfectly centered pointed pen calligraphy passage. All you need is a printer, a light box, and your calligraphy supplies.

Shortcut Pointed Pen Calligraphy Passage Tutorial

A few years ago, I posted a calligraphy quote art tutorial here on the TPK blog. That tutorial requires a sizable time investment because of all the measuring and drafting! For years, I’ve thought there has to be an easier way … and this morning, a new method popped into my head. Today, I’m going to show you how to efficiently create a centered pointed pen calligraphy passage. Note that this method works best with bouncy, slightly inconsistent calligraphy styles. That’s why I’m using Kaitlin Style calligraphy for this tutorial!

    1. Print Off Your Quote

First, find a bouncy font style online that seems to roughly match the letter spacing of your own bouncy calligraphy. I chose a font called Silverweed, which I downloaded for free. Then, use a program like Microsoft Word to center your passage. Print the result, then use a ruler and a pen to draw an 8″ x 10″ (20.32 cm x 25.4 cm) rectangle around your passage.

    Calligraphy Passage Printout
Make sure your passage has lots of room on the sides! If you get too close to the edges of the page, it can look a bit strange.

    2. Use a Light Box and the Printout to Create Your Pointed Pen Calligraphy Passage

Now, use four little squares of washi tape to affix an 8″ x 10″ (20.32 cm x 25.4 cm) piece of drawing paper to your printout. Place the printout and the drawing paper on a light box, and you should be able to clearly see the computer-generated font.

Calligraphy Passage On a Light Box
I am using 80# Strathmore drawing paper for this project. It’s easy to write on and features a pretty, almost vintage cream color.

Next, get out some sumi ink, and fit your favorite pen with a Nikko G nib. If you’re writing a long-ish passage like my Romeo and Juliet soliloquy, it’s important to use a medium flex nib like the G so you can maintain fairly narrow strokes! Then, use the printout as a guideline for word width. Basically, every word you write should match the width of the printed word underneath it. Your calligraphy style will be different than the printout, but the width will be the same. Here’s a timelapse video that shows how I used my printout:

As a right-handed person, I found it easiest to use a right oblique pen to create this piece.

The printable proved to be extremely helpful as a centering tool! I was afraid that my natural inclination would be to trace the computer font calligraphy, but that wasn’t a problem.

Shortcut Pointed Pen Calligraphy Passage Tutorial
As you can see, the finished calligraphy has a different look than its computer-generated cousin.

    3. Add Ink Spatters (Optional)

If you like a clean, no-frills look, you can call your project good after Step 2. If you like just a bit of artistic messiness, though, try adding some ink spatters! To accomplish that, I used an old nib, sumi ink, and a heavy piece of cardstock (in the form of a bookmark). It’s easiest to show you how to add ink spatters versus writing a text explanation, so here’s a short process video:

Once you add that first ink spatter, there’s no going back, which can make this step scary! I was hesitant to add ink spatters, but I’m glad I did. It gives the piece an artistic, confident look — and it reiterates that this calligraphy is an original piece that was written by hand!

Shortcut Pointed Pen Calligraphy Passage Tutorial

Whether you choose to spatter or not to spatter, I hope that this pointed pen calligraphy passage shortcut comes in handy! I think it’s awesome for gifts, calligraphy quote art for your home, or sketchbook pages. In fact, I plan to use this technique to make a Mother’s Day gift for my mom this year … partially because I’ve waited until now to do something special for her, and this project is so quick!

Thanks very much for reading, and have a wonderful weekend!

    Warmly,

Wow, that really is a much better way of doing it on the computer than how I was originally shown. But, I’m so used to doing it “the old fashioned” way, which is certainly NOT quick, but I’m comfortable with it. Maybe its time to try something new and omg…move into the next century! Hahaha. Also, I’ve never been able to find the right font style. So, I’m going to try and find the site that you got the Silverweed font from and see what I can find.
I’ve also never thought really considered using my nib, to splatter! Even when you first did it I was nervous for how much ink might come out, but it was perfect.
Great tip as usual! Thank you!

Brilliant, Lindsey! I may use this technique on my Zentangle art too! I’ve spattered before, but usually with a paintbrush or old toothbrush and sometimes a big blob drops in an unfortunate spot. 🙁 The finer, spray-like dots from your nib are just what I’ve been looking for. 🙂

There is nothing like a clean, well-organized wate There is nothing like a clean, well-organized watercolor chart. I used to make watercolor chart layouts using math and grids (which, trust me, was painful for someone like me, who doesn’t *love* numbers/measuring/calculations) ... then it occurred to me that I could use Photoshop to give myself a little boost. Much less math and fretting, which for me equals much more joy! Palette is from @greenleafblue — she made it so I could have a gorgeous palette for “The Calligraphy Book”, and this color chart definitely helped to boost the aesthetic of an already stunning supply. 🎨😍

If you’re curious about this technique for making a watercolor chart, you can search the TPK website for “watercolor chart” ... there’s a detailed blog post over how to use the template method that I’m showing you here!

An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of thos An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of those tools that is indispensable for a lot of applications. It was designed to make precise cuts, which, of course, it does well! But, you can also use it to scrape off unwanted ink smears (pro tip: after the fact, you can smooth disturbed paper fibers with a pebble), create interesting interior cuts, trim tiny details that scissors can’t reach, make stencils and templates, refine collage elements, and gently correct small drawing or calligraphy mistakes.

I have used X-Acto knives for many TPK Blog tutorials, but up until last week, I’d never written a guide that puts the X-Acto knife front and center. That guide now exists, and you can find it by visiting the link 🔗 in my profile. Be sure to watch the tutorial video!

Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a nutshell at TPK! 🥜

This year, I loved teaching at @thehappyevercrafter’s Workshop Week and participating in @calmingcalligraphy’s World Calligraphy as Meditation Day. And seeing the TPK calligraphy kit featured in @newyorkermag’s 2025 holiday gift guide was an unexpected (and delightful) cherry on top! 🍒

So much of what happened over the past year, though, was shaped by the TPK Premium community. Their questions and feedback helped guide Hand Lettering 101, while their encouragement fueled tutorials on topics ranging from turning red wine into calligraphy ink to illustrating recipes, painting with a wedge brush, and creating greeting cards and envelope art. 💌 That same support made it possible to create new worksheets and resources that others were able to enjoy as well, which I’m very grateful for.

For a fuller recap (with helpful links and details) I shared a 2025 reflection on the TPK blog (link in bio).

✦ Finetec gold → bright, cheerful, and versatile
