A Guide to the Different Types of Calligraphy (Plus a Quiz)

As a calligraphy beginner, you probably have an idea of the calligraphy style you’d like to be able to make. Sometimes, though, you don’t have a name for it — which can make it hard to move forward! In this article, we’ll examine five common types of western calligraphy. The article concludes with a quiz to help you decide which of them to pursue!

    1. Modern Pointed Pen Calligraphy

    Mail Art

Modern pointed pen calligraphy dominates the TPK website because it’s my personal favorite out of all the different types of calligraphy. (This style of calligraphy is what I think of when I hear “modern calligraphy”, so that’s how I refer to it throughout the site.) You create this calligraphy style with a pointed pen nib, which is simply a nib with a pointed tip. If you’re interested in this calligraphy style, you can read about how to move forward with it in this article.

    2. Brush Pen Calligraphy

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

Brush pen calligraphy is calligraphy that’s made with pens that have long, tapered tips and a consistent ink flow. The technique for using brush pens echoes the technique used for pointed pens: you apply pressure to make thick strokes, and you let up on pressure to make thin strokes. Brush pen calligraphy only requires two supplies (a brush pen and paper), and it’s a fun and approachable way to get started with any type of calligraphy. You can learn more about brush pen calligraphy — and find free brush pen worksheets — in this article. (If you like the idea of using brush pens, “Crayola calligraphy” and paintbrush lettering may also be of interest to you!)

    3. Faux Calligraphy

DIY Chalkboard Art Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

Faux calligraphy is calligraphy created with any standard writing instrument like a ballpoint pen, chalk, or a marker. To make it, you start off by writing a word in a cursive/calligraphy style. Then, you use the same instrument to go through and thicken any downstrokes in the word. You can use faux calligraphy for almost any project, but I particularly love it for big projects like murals and chalkboards. It’s also great for writing on surfaces that aren’t suitable for the pointed pen! You can learn more about faux calligraphy (and find a free printable) in this article.

    4. Traditional Pointed Pen Calligraphy

Learning to Write Spencerian Script By Michael and Debra Sull

Traditional pointed pen calligraphy styles like Spencerian and Copperplate have been around for years, and you create them with particular strokes and formations. You have some room to be creative, but you don’t have a lot of freedom compared to modern calligraphy. For a comparison of modern and traditional pointed pen calligraphy styles plus resources to learn traditional calligraphy, see this article.

    5. Broad Edge Calligraphy

You create broad edge calligraphy with nibs that have a flat tip. Instead of varying your pressure in order to make different stroke widths, you reposition the nib. Thick strokes are the result of allowing the entire nib to meet the paper. You create thin strokes with the nib’s edge. While there are both modern and traditional styles of broad edge calligraphy, I have to admit that my knowledge of them is limited. To learn more, I highly recommend visiting Jake Rainis’s website.

I hope that this article helps you gain some clarity on which type of calligraphy to tackle! Remember that you don’t have to relegate yourself to only one kind of writing. Most calligraphers dabble in more than one of the types of calligraphy listed above — and some do all of them! I encourage you to try all of the calligraphy tools and styles that appeal to you, which will keep things fresh and fun.

    Warmly,

Thanks Lindsey for such a thorough and thoughtful website! I enjoyed the quiz, but was surprised by my results which stated modern dip pen calligraphy.
As a lefty, I first tried to learn calligraphy using a set of calligraphy pens with nibs for left-handers that I found at Michael’s Craft Store. I wasn’t able to get the ink to flow steadily or consistently despite using the left handed nibs.
Then I tried brush lettering and soon became addicted! I try not to think about how much I’ve spent on brushmarkers and other supplies over the past two years! I have everything from Tombow Dual Brush Pens, Tombow Fudenosuke, Karin Brush Markers Pro (plus Metallic and Neon), Pentel Touch Sign, Stabilo, and too many more to name. My paper collection is also growing by leaps and bounds. Additionally, I’ve begun playing with watercolor backgrounds. My next goal is to learn watercolor lettering. Needless to say, my collection of art supplies is continuing to grow by the day! That’s what happens when you’re an empty nester with unlimited time on your hands.
Anyway, until now I thought dip pen calligraphy referred to the calligraphy I create with my glass dip pens. I didn’t realize there was more to it than that. 🤦‍♀️
Do you think I could learn modern dip pen calligraphy as described in your blog posts?
My ultimate goal is to make my own stationary, greeting cards, and offer wedding related calligraphy services such as invitations, envelopes, and place cards. I’d also like to create handmade framed prints and quotes, NOT prints or printables.
Any information you provide is greatly appreciated! I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks again for a wonderful website.
    Very respectfully,
    ~Amanda

Hi Lindsey, it’s me again. When my comment posted it pulled up a really old profile picture of me. What do you use for your comments section? I’m trying to figure out where and how to go in and update my photo, etc.
      Thanks again,

I think there are some companies that try to make sales to lefties with things like left-handed calligraphy nibs, but the truth is the vast majority of lefties don’t need special tools. Usually, you’ll do just fine with a straight pen and a standard nib. 🙂 And absolutely I think — know — that you can learn modern pointed pen calligraphy! I’m actually releasing a new version of the Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Online Course next week that includes two videos specifically for lefties. I think that’ll help a lot!

✨Chic Inky Poppies Mail Art✨ – This inky poppy ✨Chic Inky Poppies Mail Art✨ - This inky poppy motif is one of my all-time favorites for filling blank space with drama and elegance. To make it, you use dark ink smudges, loose leaves, and airy petals to build a border that looks intricate but comes together quickly. My go-tos for this style are sumi ink and a touch of gold watercolor for warmth.

Want to try it yourself? Visit the TPK website (link in bio) and search for “Chic Inky Poppies Mail Art Tutorial.” Happy creating! 🌸🖋️

✍️ There’s a fresh addition to the TPK Catal ✍️ There’s a fresh addition to the TPK Catalog: The Graceful Ballerina Calligraphy Drill Worksheet

This ballerina is unique among TPK calligraphy drills in that it’s really not that complicated. After a few simple loops, a flourished tutu, and long strokes to make the legs, you have, well, a ballerina! 🩰 The most difficult part is getting the outline right; but even that isn’t too bad because you’ve got a traceable outline included in your worksheet set.

The beauty of the flourished ballerina? She makes *anything* look elegant: cards, envelopes, gift tags, whatever. My recommendation is to feature her on your next envelope. She’ll add a “wow” factor and allow you to left-justify the address, which is always a relief (no need to bother with centering)!

To find her, visit the link in my bio, then navigate to the Blog!

✨I’ve been making these little calligraphy Chr ✨I’ve been making these little calligraphy Christmas trees for years. They’re a go-to whenever I need a quick gift tag, envelope flourish, or something festive that doesn’t require a whole afternoon.

They look fancy, but they’re really just simple strokes stacked in different patterns. Truly: once you get the rhythm down, you can make a tree in under 30 seconds. 🎄

If you want to try them (there are six styles!), the tutorial is on the TPK Blog, and it’s called
“6 Simple Ways to Make a Calligraphy Christmas Tree.” Feel free to google it, or visit: thepostmansknock.com/6-simple-ways-to-make-a-calligraphy-christmas-tree/

It’s very beginner-friendly, video-based, and a great way to get some creativity in during a busy season. I hope you love it as much as I do. 💛

🎁 These printable gift tags are one of my favor 🎁 These printable gift tags are one of my favorite free printables on the TPK site. Just download, print, cut them out, and — if you want to — reinforce them with a bit of cardstock.

Inside the PDF you’ll find four designs: Festive Frida, Flourished Tree, Pine Boughs, and Merry & Bright. They’re all hand-drawn, and they make even the simplest wrapping look bespoke and artistic. 🎨

Pro tip: If you’ve got a bit of extra time, add a pop of watercolor or some gold dots; and consider mounting the tag on a contrasting piece of cardstock for extra oomph.

They’re free to download at: thepostmansknock.com/free-super-cool-hand-drawn-printable-gift-tags/ (or visit the link in my stories today). Happy holidays!

If you’re looking for a holiday project that feels creative and doable, this is *such* a good one. The printable template does half the work for you, and you can customize the rest with flourishes, white ink, ornaments, or whatever feels festive to you.

The full step-by-step tutorial is waiting for you on the TPK website; just head to the link in my bio and tap “Blog.” I think you’ll have as much fun making this as I did. ❤️
