Gingko Leaf Handmade Sympathy Card Tutorial

    Sympathy Cards

We’ve had a very tough week here in Boulder due to a mass shooting, which occurred two blocks from our home. Unfortunately, this presents the occasion for a handmade sympathy card tutorial. Today, I’ll show you how to make an elegant card that hits the right note.

Gingko Leaf Handmade Sympathy Card Tutorial

As we watched police cars, ambulances, and SWAT vehicles race past our house, we had no idea what was going on. Then, the news made its way to us: there was an active shooter at our neighborhood supermarket. A market that my husband and I had shopped at the previous day with our toddler. As we processed the sobering news, the death toll was published: ten victims, including a police officer.

Being creative is one of my coping tools for tough situations, so I channeled my energy today into making a sympathy card to send to the officer’s family. I was not personally acquainted with the officer, but his sacrifice — and the senseless deaths of nine other people in my community — breaks my heart. After a fraught night of trying to sleep, I put in my headphones, turned on The Crown, and set out to make this handmade sympathy card. And while I hope you don’t have a reason to use this tutorial, it’s here for you when you do:

    1. Draw a Pencil Draft

To begin, procure a dark-colored piece of paper (preferably handmade) and a white pencil.

    Handmade Sympathy Card Tutorial
I used Indian Cotton Paper Co. 5″x7″ paper in “Dark Green” and this white pencil.

Next, use your white pencil to draw a gingko branch on the upper part of the paper. The branch should extend halfway down the page.

Feel free to use this photo as a reference to draw your own gingko branch draft.

Now, turn your attention to the bottom left of the page, where you’ll draw another branch. Finish up by drafting out lettering and calligraphy. “Wishing You Comfort and Peace” is a lovely sympathy card sentiment. However, you can personalize your message to fit whatever feels right to you.

I used Sans Serif lettering and Janet Style calligraphy to write the message on the bottom half of the card.

    2. Ink Over the Draft

Once you’ve drawn your draft, use Arabic gold watercolor and a straight dip pen (fitted with a Nikko G nib) to trace over the gingko branch illustration at the top.

Use thick strokes to draw the stems and outlines around the gingko leaves. For the inner leaves, use thin strokes that originate at the bottom middle of the leaf.

Continue to draw until you’ve traced over all of the stems and leaves with gold.

Now, turn your attention to the lettering. For nice color contrast, use Bleed Proof White ink and your favorite pen to do so. Take it slow! Handmade paper often causes nibs to snag on the upstrokes.

I used a Brause EF66 oblique pen (+ nib) to ink over the calligraphy. For the lettering, I used my straight pen and Nikko G nib.

Then, use your gold watercolor to trace over the gingko branch draft on the bottom left. Once you’re sure all the ink has dried, gently erase the pencil draft lines.

    3. Make a Tasteful Envelope

Sympathy cards call for elegant but basic envelopes. Focus on creating calligraphy with a traditional feel … nothing too whimsical. For this envelope, I chose to write Janet Style calligraphy and Walker’s Copperplate ink. I put two serene postage stamps on the upper right to cover the additional fee for the wax seal that I’m applying to the back flap.

If you have need for this tutorial, know that it will be very much appreciated by the bereaved family. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share this project with you! I’m feeling especially grateful after Monday’s events that I have the TPK community — and a beautiful, creative life.

    Stay safe,

When a tragedy like this mass shooting is so close to home, it really tears the heart. For me, any senseless loss of life stirs up a haunting memory of my children’s father (my ex) being shot in his car. He would never see his children graduate from high school or college. They were only 10 and 14 when they lost their father back in ’97. I feel much empathy for the officer’s family and his 7 children for their loss. This is an exceptionally beautiful card you created. I’m certain they will appreciate your kindness and caring thoughts at such a tragic time. Thank you for sharing..

What a loving soul you are, Lindsey … Although we’re far from you (in Reno, NV), we saw the news and just sat staring at the TV – we could barely breathe. I knew you & your family are in Boulder, but 2 BLOCKS from that supermarket??!! Way too close for comfort. Such sadness. This is a beautiful tutorial and I applaud you for creating this card for the officer’s family.

    With love,

Lindsay, you know we live in the same area too. I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to go in the store again. I’m sure you remember the same employees that I do. This tutorial brought tears to my eyes, and I’ll definitely be using it. Thank you.

    Lindsey,
What a traumatic week for you and your city. It looks like a beautiful place and a favorite movie on mine filmed in the area has always left me of a feeling of “what a great place to be”. To have it happen so close to your home must be so jarring and I imagine you shop in that store and returning there will never be the same.
Just thinking of you, take care.

What a tragic and sad news !
I’m sure your card will be appreciated by the officer’s family.
Thank you for the tutorial of this “warm” card; sadly enough we all need those too often.
Good to hear that you and your family are safe; but it will sure take time to go on with “normal life”.
Take good care; warm greetings from Belgium,
    Lieve

Oh Lindsey! I’m so sorry to hear about this horrible tragedy! It’s even more frightening when you can connect in a personal way with such events. I’m so glad that you are all safe, but what an enormous loss for your community. I’m truly so very sorry!

Your card is simply beautiful and I’m sure will be deeply appreciated. I know I have been really grateful for the very tasteful and elegant sympathy cards you’ve shared. Sadly they have been needed for so many this year.

Thank you for sharing this post, not only for the lovely card, but so that we all know that you are safe.

I’m so glad that you like the card concept. I agree with you — these have been needed way too much in the past year. First, for COVID, and now we are dealing with a string of shootings. It makes you wonder when the madness will stop! Thanks so much for your kind words; they are deeply appreciated.

I love watching project timelapses — like a comp I love watching project timelapses — like a complicated calligraphy or watercolor project coming together in a matter of seconds. A cleaning timelapse, then, is a no-brainer! My friend mentioned that she does these when she needs a little extra motivation to tidy up. I was totally feeling that this weekend, so I made a couple of these. The anticipation of knowing that I’d get to watch the room become neat in an instant was actually incredibly motivating. ✨ One of the most beloved assignments from Lesso ✨ One of the most beloved assignments from Lesson 5 of Hand Lettering 101 was this playful project: design an artistic alphabet where no two letters look the same.

The idea? JUST PLAY. 🎨 I used watercolor and a paintbrush, but many students grabbed markers, pens, or anything colorful on hand. The results were incredible — @adriennelovesletters gave it her own flair, Isabel C. made it three times, and Laura M. created a stunning version too. (You can peek at more inside the TPK Premium Discord!)
