    Gorgeous Illustrated Autumn Pumpkin Tutorial

To me, autumn means cozy focus, warm colors, and a sense of simple joy. Today’s tutorial is one I savored from start to finish, and I hope you’ll enjoy it, too. In it, you’ll create a hand-painted pumpkin filled with leaves and flourishes that you can turn into a greeting card, mail art, or a lovely autumn display for your home.

    1. Gather Your Supplies

    Gorgeous Illustrated Autumn Pumpkin Tutorial

You’ll need a tidy little collection of supplies in order to create this illustration. They include:

    • Blank 5″ x 7″ (~12.7 cm x 17.75 cm) watercolor card (if you want to make a card, as I did in this tutorial) – affiliate link
    • Pencil and eraser
    • Nikko G nib in a straight pen
    • Small paintbrush (size 000 or so) – affiliate link
    • The following watercolor tones: a light yellow-brown, a very dark brown, a deep purple-brown, and a vibrant red (specific colors I used include: French Orange Ochre, German Cassel Earth, American Violet Hematite, Pyrrole Scarlet, and Italian Green Earth, all from Greenleaf & Blueberry)
    • Arabic gold watercolor – affiliate link
    • Autumn Pumpkin Template – optional but very helpful

    2. Make a Pencil Outline

Print the Autumn Pumpkin Template on light-colored paper, then use a light box or a sunny window to trace the design onto your blank card.

Using a light box to draw a pumpkin outline
If you don’t want to make a card, feel free to use a 5″ x 7″ (~12.7 cm x 17.75 cm) piece of plain watercolor paper for this step.

Note that if you don’t have a printer, you can always trace the design over your tablet or computer screen. Alternatively, free-hand draw it.

    Pumpkin pencil outline
I like to use a mechanical pencil for this step because of its crisp, clear strokes.

    3. Paint Lobed Leaves

Next, use your light yellow-brown, deep purple-brown, and vibrant red watercolors to paint several lobed leaves throughout the pumpkin. As you’ll see in the video below, I like to use my light box to help me position those leaves correctly:

Then, use the deep purple-brown and a very dark brown (almost black) to paint another set of lobed leaves, as shown below.

Once you’re finished, your pumpkin will look something like this:

    Leaf shapes on a pumpkin

    4. Add Sprigs of Leaves

Now, use your light green tone to paint sprigs of leaves. Before the green paint dries, blend in some deep purple-brown and red to give the leaves a warm autumn look.

When you finish, you’ll have several multi-toned leaves.

    5. Paint the Stem

Next, use your earthy green tone to fill in the stem. Use the purple-brown tone to add some contrast and visual interest.

If you’re also using Greenleaf & Blueberry colors, here’s a helpful hint that I learned in one of our coffee dates: use the Italian Green Earth paint tube. Straight out of the tube, the color looks opaque and saturated without a lot of waiting and mixing.

    An artistic pumpkin stem
Try to add your dark purple-brown to the bottom of each stem section.

    6. Add Acorns and Tiny Leaves

Now that we’ve mostly painted large elements, you’ll focus on filling in the space with smaller designs. Begin with acorns, which you’ll paint using a light yellow-brown and a dark purple-brown.

Note: If you’re not sure how to use watercolor with your pointed pen, see the How to Create Watercolor Calligraphy tutorial.

Next, use your pointed pen to paint several small, dark purple-brown leaves.

When you finish, the pumpkin should look much fuller than before.

    Autumn pumpkin illustration in progress
Notice that in the course of completing this step, I added a forgotten lobed leaf in the center of the pumpkin, too.

    7. Embellish the Piece with Gold

Now, use your pointed pen and gold watercolor to add various embellishments like leaves, sprigs, and dots.

Once you finish adding those embellishments, use your pointed pen to draw directly over the stem and leaves with gold watercolor.

    Then, admire your handiwork!

    Gorgeous autumn pumpkin illustration
Enjoy your shimmering, coziness-boosting autumn pumpkin illustration — you did a great job!

    8. Add Flourishes (Optional)

Because I can never quite leave well enough alone, I decided to enhance my pumpkin with some flourishes. If you want to do this, too, go ahead and use your pencil to draft the flourishes’ positions.

    Autumn pumpkin flourishes

Then, use a pointed pen and the watercolor calligraphy technique to draw over those flourishes with your gold watercolor.

    Gorgeous Illustrated Autumn Pumpkin Tutorial
I used a Brause EF66 nib in an oblique pen to create these contrast-filled flourishes.

I hope that you enjoyed learning how to make this autumn pumpkin illustration! For those of us who are working through the new Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Online Course, this project offers a bit of a palette cleanser and some creative cross-training. If you try it out, please share what you make! I love seeing your work on Discord or Instagram.

Thanks so much for reading, and happy creating!

    Warmly,

Good morning / evening Lindsey , at nearly 83 years of age i have finally discovered calligraphy and your blog . What a revelation ! but the clincher was ” Because i can never quite leave enough alone ” . I shall be putting pen to paper on this phrase and possibly driving myself crazy in the process of flourishing and other things .
    Regards

Gary, your comment made my day! I’m so happy you’ve discovered calligraphy — it’s never too late to fall in love with pen and ink. 😊 And yes, that phrase sums me up perfectly … the joy (and challenge!) of knowing when to stop is half the fun, isn’t it? Wishing you many happy hours of flourishing and creative “not leaving well enough alone.”

I’m unable to play with my calligraphy and art supplies anymore because of illness, but I still watched this, and it was so wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable. It truly was a lovely little blessing in my day. Thank you so much! 💛

✨Chic Inky Poppies Mail Art✨ – This inky poppy ✨Chic Inky Poppies Mail Art✨ - This inky poppy motif is one of my all-time favorites for filling blank space with drama and elegance. To make it, you use dark ink smudges, loose leaves, and airy petals to build a border that looks intricate but comes together quickly. My go-tos for this style are sumi ink and a touch of gold watercolor for warmth.

Want to try it yourself? Visit the TPK website (link in bio) and search for “Chic Inky Poppies Mail Art Tutorial.” Happy creating! 🌸🖋️

✍️ There’s a fresh addition to the TPK Catal ✍️ There’s a fresh addition to the TPK Catalog: The Graceful Ballerina Calligraphy Drill Worksheet

This ballerina is unique among TPK calligraphy drills in that it’s really not that complicated. After a few simple loops, a flourished tutu, and long strokes to make the legs, you have, well, a ballerina! 🩰 The most difficult part is getting the outline right; but even that isn’t too bad because you’ve got a traceable outline included in your worksheet set.

The beauty of the flourished ballerina? She makes *anything* look elegant: cards, envelopes, gift tags, whatever. My recommendation is to feature her on your next envelope. She’ll add a “wow” factor and allow you to left-justify the address, which is always a relief (no need to bother with centering)!

To find her, visit the link in my bio, then navigate to the Blog!

✨I’ve been making these little calligraphy Chr ✨I’ve been making these little calligraphy Christmas trees for years. They’re a go-to whenever I need a quick gift tag, envelope flourish, or something festive that doesn’t require a whole afternoon.

They look fancy, but they’re really just simple strokes stacked in different patterns. Truly: once you get the rhythm down, you can make a tree in under 30 seconds. 🎄

If you want to try them (there are six styles!), the tutorial is on the TPK Blog, and it’s called
“6 Simple Ways to Make a Calligraphy Christmas Tree.” Feel free to google it, or visit: thepostmansknock.com/6-simple-ways-to-make-a-calligraphy-christmas-tree/

It’s very beginner-friendly, video-based, and a great way to get some creativity in during a busy season. I hope you love it as much as I do. 💛

🎁 These printable gift tags are one of my favor 🎁 These printable gift tags are one of my favorite free printables on the TPK site. Just download, print, cut them out, and — if you want to — reinforce them with a bit of cardstock.

Inside the PDF you’ll find four designs: Festive Frida, Flourished Tree, Pine Boughs, and Merry & Bright. They’re all hand-drawn, and they make even the simplest wrapping look bespoke and artistic. 🎨

Pro tip: If you’ve got a bit of extra time, add a pop of watercolor or some gold dots; and consider mounting the tag on a contrasting piece of cardstock for extra oomph.

They’re free to download at: thepostmansknock.com/free-super-cool-hand-drawn-printable-gift-tags/ (or visit the link in my stories today). Happy holidays!

If you’re looking for a holiday project that feels creative and doable, this is *such* a good one. The printable template does half the work for you, and you can customize the rest with flourishes, white ink, ornaments, or whatever feels festive to you.
