Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

I have posted my fair share of card tutorials on this Blog … and I can’t admit to all of them being quick. I know that you don’t always have time to painstakingly hand-letter a message, paint dozens of tiny leaves, or commit to making scores of parallel lines! Next time you find yourself on a tight creation deadline, try this quick watercolor and calligraphy balloon birthday card tutorial. Its versatility and simple technique makes it the perfect card for anyone’s special day!

Video Tutorial: Watercolor and Calligraphy Balloons Birthday Card

If you prefer video tutorials, you can find instructions for creating this card below. For written instructions, keep scrolling!

Written Tutorial: Watercolor and Calligraphy Balloons Birthday Card

    1. Gather Your Supplies

Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

To get started, you’ll need a few supplies:

    • Watercolor paper, cut to 9.25″ x 8″
    • Bone folder (optional)
    • Pencil + eraser
    • Waterproof black ink
    • Nib + pen holder of your choice (I used a Brause EF66 nib + oblique pen)
    • Watercolor palette
    • Size 3 (-ish) paintbrush

    2. Fold the Card

First, fold the paper in half such that it’s 4″ wide by 9.25″ tall — the perfect size for a #10 envelope. To make a crisp fold, you can run a bone folder along the seam.

Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

    2. Write the Calligraphy

Balloons are the theme for this birthday card, and three of them carry a message in their strings. The first will say “happy”, the second “birthday”, and the third “to you”. With this in mind, draw three vertical pencil guidelines on the card. The three lines pictured are about an inch apart.

Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

Next, use waterproof ink to write “happy” using Kaitlin Style calligraphy (or whatever style you prefer).

Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
Be sure to include a long tail before the “h”, and an equally long tail after the “y”.

Use the same technique to write “birthday” and “to you”. Connect “to” and “you” together with a fairly long tail; if the words are too closely spaced, the recipient will read them as “toyou”.

Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

    3. Draw the Balloons

Once your ink dries, you can erase the vertical lines that you just drew. Pick up your pencil again, and use it to draw three balloons: one on the end of each line of calligraphy. Next, draw two more strings and balloons: one should go in between each line of calligraphy. If you’re not sure how to draw a balloon, don’t worry! A balloon is just an oval with a small triangle shape at the bottom.

Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
For a natural look, draw your balloons tilting in different directions.

Now, trace over the pencil balloons with your waterproof ink.

Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

    4. Let There Be Light

Now, you’ll focus on adding some realism to your balloons with light reflections. To draw a light reflection, you just need to draw two or three small rectangles that are parallel to the curved edge of each balloon. All light reflection rectangles should appear on the left part of the balloons.

Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
Draw two or three narrow, curved rectangles on each balloon.

    5. Add Watercolor to the Balloons

Now, choose three watercolors, then use the first of the three colors to fill in two balloons.

Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
To make this step efficient and enjoyable, use whichever color medium you are most comfortable with. For me, that’s watercolor — but for you, that could mean colored pencils, crayons, markers, colored pens … whatever.

Use the next color to fill in two more balloons.

Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

Finally, use the third color to fill in the last balloon. Once you have filled that balloon in, the birthday card is finished and ready to send!

Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
For this piece, I used colors from Greenleaf & Blueberry (Malachite, Pink Pipestone, Azurite). For the card in the video tutorial, I used colors from my Winsor & Newton Cotman set.

    Notes and Variations

This quick watercolor and balloons birthday card tutorial is one of my favorites because you can customize it in so many ways! You can change the following to accommodate your personal style and schedule:

    • Size – You can make a card of virtually any size using this technique. Draw the balloons and strings closer together for a smaller card, and draw them farther apart for a larger card.
    • Mediums – Instead of a pointed pen, you can use any regular pen (and faux calligraphy, if you’d like) to draw the balloon strings. Watercolors are also optional; any colorful medium will work to fill in the balloons!
    • Font – If you’re not confident in your calligraphy, feel free to use plain cursive.

Quick Balloon Birthday Card Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

Whether you choose to make changes to the tutorial or not, I know you’ll enjoy making this card! It’s a clever and artistic way to make someone feel special, and provides a nice creative break for you.

Many, many thanks for reading TPK, and have a lovely day!

    Warmly,

I love all of your help and offerings. You have a great blend of free and for purchase. It’s nice to have a single source for supplies as well. I often use your ideas as a starting point for Christmas cards, birthday cards and of course envelopes. Your prices are reasonable and the downloads the best! I get them instantly and can print only the portions I want. For practice worksheets pdf’s are perfect as well.
    Keep up the creative offerings!

I love how EASY this is to put together! My aunt has a birthday coming up and this worked out perfect. Had to practice the calligraphy a bit until confidence kicked in, but once my hand got the hang of it, whew! It was so simple! Because my aunt really loves stickers and confetti (she puts stickers on E V E R Y T H I N G), I added confetti and little stars with a Micron 01. Thank you so much for creating such awesome projects! 😊

There is nothing like a clean, well-organized wate There is nothing like a clean, well-organized watercolor chart. I used to make watercolor chart layouts using math and grids (which, trust me, was painful for someone like me, who doesn’t *love* numbers/measuring/calculations) ... then it occurred to me that I could use Photoshop to give myself a little boost. Much less math and fretting, which for me equals much more joy! Palette is from @greenleafblue — she made it so I could have a gorgeous palette for “The Calligraphy Book”, and this color chart definitely helped to boost the aesthetic of an already stunning supply. 🎨😍

If you’re curious about this technique for making a watercolor chart, you can search the TPK website for “watercolor chart” ... there’s a detailed blog post over how to use the template method that I’m showing you here!

An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of thos An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of those tools that is indispensable for a lot of applications. It was designed to make precise cuts, which, of course, it does well! But, you can also use it to scrape off unwanted ink smears (pro tip: after the fact, you can smooth disturbed paper fibers with a pebble), create interesting interior cuts, trim tiny details that scissors can’t reach, make stencils and templates, refine collage elements, and gently correct small drawing or calligraphy mistakes.

I have used X-Acto knives for many TPK Blog tutorials, but up until last week, I’d never written a guide that puts the X-Acto knife front and center. That guide now exists, and you can find it by visiting the link 🔗 in my profile. Be sure to watch the tutorial video!

Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a nutshell at TPK! 🥜

This year, I loved teaching at @thehappyevercrafter’s Workshop Week and participating in @calmingcalligraphy’s World Calligraphy as Meditation Day. And seeing the TPK calligraphy kit featured in @newyorkermag’s 2025 holiday gift guide was an unexpected (and delightful) cherry on top! 🍒

So much of what happened over the past year, though, was shaped by the TPK Premium community. Their questions and feedback helped guide Hand Lettering 101, while their encouragement fueled tutorials on topics ranging from turning red wine into calligraphy ink to illustrating recipes, painting with a wedge brush, and creating greeting cards and envelope art. 💌 That same support made it possible to create new worksheets and resources that others were able to enjoy as well, which I’m very grateful for.

For a fuller recap (with helpful links and details) I shared a 2025 reflection on the TPK blog (link in bio).

✨ A little comparison today … because not all ✨ A little comparison today ... because not all golds behave the same.

✦ Finetec gold → bright, cheerful, and versatile
✦ Greenleaf & Blueberry faux brass → softer, muted, and stunning
✦ Yasutomo pale gold → velvety, subtle shimmer with a sensible amount of sparkle

I love having all three on hand and choosing based on the feel I want for a project. It’s tough to go wrong! ✨
