    Flourishing, Video

The beauty of calligraphy flourishing lies in its spontaneity and the unique, often surprising, paths your creativity can take. Today, I’ve got a real-time flourishing video for you and resources to help you learn how to flourish, too!

Gold and white flourished envelope calligraphy on a navy blue envelope

I’ve always been a huge fan of calligraphy flourishing because it embodies the spirit of creative freedom. You begin with an unembellished word or phrase and then you just play, letting your imagination and the rhythm of the pen guide you. As you add loops, swirls, and embellishments, the word transforms into something artistic and expressive.

Calligraphy Flourishing for Beginners | The Postman's Knock

To me, the other cool aspect of flourishing is how meditative it can be. When you focus on creating intricate loops and swirls, it’s difficult not to relax. This process is not just about creating beautiful art; it’s also a form of mindfulness practice that allows you to retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

    A Real Time Flourishing Video

A couple of weeks ago, a TPK customer purchased a gift certificate for her daughter, Katinka, and I calligraphed an envelope for it. At that time, it was the height of the holiday frenzy, and I welcomed the opportunity to make a relaxing project. I thought you might like to see my process, so I filmed it from start to finish. Yes, it took me a whole thirty minutes to write one name (I know, I know); but it was a thirty minutes that helped to rejuvenate me in the midst of the “holidaze”.

While you’ll pick up some layout and flourishing tips from the video, I hope that the main thing you glean is how much the journey matters in calligraphy. Calligraphy is as much about the experience and the pleasure you get from making it as it is about the final outcome. It’s a whole thing: the planning, the experimentation, and solving problems, and it demands your focus in the best of ways. Next time you take on a calligraphy project, remember that it’s okay to get lost in what you’re doing and fuss over it a bit.

There are several different ways to flourish any word or phrase. Have fun and play!

    Resources to Hone Your Flourishing

While the video above is more of a stream of consciousness calligraphy flourishing creation video, there are plenty of focused tutorials on TPK that provide specific instructions. They include:

    1. How to Make the Perfect Name-Only Envelope for a Card

In the How to Make the Perfect Name-Only Envelope for a Card tutorial, you’ll learn how to make guidelines, plan a draft, and add optional gold enhancements to make an eye-catching and pretty name-only flourished envelope.

How to Make the Perfect Name-Only Envelope for a Card

Note: If you’re interested in seeing more examples of name-only envelope calligraphy, see 10 Examples of Name Calligraphy on Envelopes.

    2. Pointed Pen Calligraphy Flourishing for Beginners + Free Worksheet

If you’re new to the world of calligraphy flourishing, take heart: “flourishing” sounds deceptively technical. In reality, flourishing is really just “doodling: calligraphy edition”. In Pointed Pen Calligraphy Flourishing for Beginners + Free Worksheet, you’ll find a beginner’s guide to flourishing and a free worksheet with helpful exercises.

Free Calligraphy Flourishing Worksheet | The Postman's Knock

    3. Making Fabulous Calligraphy Flourishes (Includes Free Worksheet)

The beginner+ or intermediate flourisher will appreciate the Making Fabulous Calligraphy Flourishes article and the worksheet that comes with it. The article also includes numerous inspirational examples to help spark inspiration!

Making Fabulous Calligraphy Flourishes (Includes Free Worksheet)

The three tutorials listed above were the first that came to my mind, but there are several additional flourishing resources available on the TPK site. To peruse them, click the button below:

Taking It to the Next Level

If you want a structured approach to honing your flourishing skills, consider enrolling in Flourish With Me, an on-demand online course. In the course, you’ll learn how to create professional-looking flourishes through a pencil draft process, skills for self-critique, and technical writing tips.

Translation: “Don’t wait for the perfect moment, take the moment and make it perfect.” I intentionally chose a Spanish phrase for the English “Flourish With Me” course because I don’t want you to focus too much on the words. Instead, it’s best to take flourishing one letter at a time — which is easier when you’re working with a foreign language.
    ENROLL IN “FLOURISH WITH ME”

I hope that you enjoyed today’s video and the additional flourishing resources. If they inspire you to whip out your pen and start making lovely loops at a leisurely pace, I’ve done my job. Thanks so much for reading, and happy creating!

    Warmly,

I recently took the Flourish with me course. It has been very helpful, but I still need to practice a LOT to be able to visualize all the options I have to include flourishes in my writing. Great exercise and I recommend it to anyone that likes flourishes!

Hello, I would like to share my impressions because after visiting the https://www.gamblemastery.com/ website, I received useful information about the gambling business and casinos. Their reviews are detailed and objective, giving me the opportunity to make an informed choice. I am impressed with their professionalism and desire to help players find the best casinos and bonuses.

Great article, a good idea for additional income and business in general. It would be a pleasant addition to my interest in gambling, through which I also have a small additional income. Foreign casinos for Estonians not only provide enjoyment and excitement but also offer an opportunity to earn extra money. You can find such online platforms on https://valismaa-kasiino.com, one of the best services for finding such online platforms for gaming in my opinion. It’s very interesting to diversify and explore different avenues for income. You inspire us with new ideas and their implementation.

The flourishing of real-time calligraphy reflects people’s interest in the art of beautiful writing in the modern world. I write articles on this topic and sometimes I encounter problems with photo processing. Enlarging images without losing quality is a challenge in computer vision and image processing, but thanks to the
depositphots.com , this problem no longer exists. Traditional methods of upsizing can result in loss of detail and blurring. However, there are modern methods and algorithms that try to minimize losses when increasing the size of images.

What oblique pen holder did you use? Who made it?

Hi! That EF66 oblique pen holder was made by Rodger Mayeda, who unfortunately no longer makes pen holders. He did teach me how to make the flanges for TPK’s EF66 holders, though (https://thepostmansknock.com/catalog/right-oblique-pen-for-brause-ef66-nib/). 🙂

✍️ There’s a fresh addition to the TPK Catal ✍️ There’s a fresh addition to the TPK Catalog: The Graceful Ballerina Calligraphy Drill Worksheet

This ballerina is unique among TPK calligraphy drills in that it’s really not that complicated. After a few simple loops, a flourished tutu, and long strokes to make the legs, you have, well, a ballerina! 🩰 The most difficult part is getting the outline right; but even that isn’t too bad because you’ve got a traceable outline included in your worksheet set.

The beauty of the flourished ballerina? She makes *anything* look elegant: cards, envelopes, gift tags, whatever. My recommendation is to feature her on your next envelope. She’ll add a “wow” factor and allow you to left-justify the address, which is always a relief (no need to bother with centering)!

To find her, visit the link in my bio, then navigate to the Blog!

✨I’ve been making these little calligraphy Chr ✨I’ve been making these little calligraphy Christmas trees for years. They’re a go-to whenever I need a quick gift tag, envelope flourish, or something festive that doesn’t require a whole afternoon.

They look fancy, but they’re really just simple strokes stacked in different patterns. Truly: once you get the rhythm down, you can make a tree in under 30 seconds. 🎄

If you want to try them (there are six styles!), the tutorial is on the TPK Blog, and it’s called
“6 Simple Ways to Make a Calligraphy Christmas Tree.” Feel free to google it, or visit: thepostmansknock.com/6-simple-ways-to-make-a-calligraphy-christmas-tree/

It’s very beginner-friendly, video-based, and a great way to get some creativity in during a busy season. I hope you love it as much as I do. 💛

🎁 These printable gift tags are one of my favor 🎁 These printable gift tags are one of my favorite free printables on the TPK site. Just download, print, cut them out, and — if you want to — reinforce them with a bit of cardstock.

Inside the PDF you’ll find four designs: Festive Frida, Flourished Tree, Pine Boughs, and Merry & Bright. They’re all hand-drawn, and they make even the simplest wrapping look bespoke and artistic. 🎨

Pro tip: If you’ve got a bit of extra time, add a pop of watercolor or some gold dots; and consider mounting the tag on a contrasting piece of cardstock for extra oomph.

They’re free to download at: thepostmansknock.com/free-super-cool-hand-drawn-printable-gift-tags/ (or visit the link in my stories today). Happy holidays!

There’s something extra fun about a card that do There’s something extra fun about a card that doesn’t just open … it comes to life. ✨ This little stand-up tree might look fancy, but it’s totally approachable — relaxing to make, satisfying to embellish, and (my favorite part) it folds up perfectly to pop in the mail. 💌🎄

If you’re looking for a holiday project that feels creative and doable, this is *such* a good one. The printable template does half the work for you, and you can customize the rest with flourishes, white ink, ornaments, or whatever feels festive to you.

The full step-by-step tutorial is waiting for you on the TPK website; just head to the link in my bio and tap “Blog.” I think you’ll have as much fun making this as I did. ❤️

The other day, I was thinking about sending out ho The other day, I was thinking about sending out holiday cards, and I immediately dismissed the thought with, “I have zero time to calligraph envelopes for those.” ✍️

... But is that true? I put it to the test for the latest article on the TPK Blog. Using some time-saving tricks I’ve learned over the years (like using a watery ink, a bouncy calligraphy style, and minimal pencil guidelines), I timed myself making three envelope concepts. Two of them took 5 minutes or less. The most time-intensive took 5 minutes, 30 seconds. The envelopes still turned out looking elegant, especially with the help of some artistic postage stamp collages. 💌

After I chose this music to accompany this reel, i After I chose this music to accompany this reel, it dawned on me: drawing a calligraphy medallion is like, well, Belle’s arc with the Beast.

At first, it’s a bit of a weird situation. Strange shapes, questionable structure, possibly some growling (à la “YOU WILL JOIN ME FOR DINNER. That’s not a request!”) when the inevitable ink smudge happens. You keep thinking, “I’m not sure why I’m doing this ... should I hop on Felipe and gallop away?” 🐎

But something shifts as the medallion starts to come to life. And when you finish that last detail and pull back, the music swells. Light bursts from your paper like it did from Beast’s digits as he transformed into a stunningly beautiful prince. ✨ You’re practically in a ballroom celebrating, and, wait, did your furniture just turn into an adoring crowd that’s celebrating your fortitude and skill?

(And now you know how my mind works 🧠 ... I love a good metaphor, no matter how weak it may be!)

To learn how to make a calligraphy medallion, just search for “calligraphy medallion” on the TPK site (link in bio). You’ll find both free Blog tutorials and detailed premium worksheets.

... I’ll show myself out now. 🙈
