    I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than honoring a love of creativity! These “lovely” calligraphy drills will provide some relaxing and beneficial dip pen practice. Enjoy!!

    Valentine’s Day is traditionally a time to celebrate love and affection. From cozy candlelit dinners to heartfelt notes, it’s a day to appreciate those we care about. Amidst these sweet traditions, however, some might feel the day’s commercialized expectations. While I look forward to doing something small and special with my husband (and, let’s be honest, our two little kids), I’ll also be giving myself a gift in the form of time to create. If that also sounds good to you, consider incorporating the Lovely Calligraphy Drills worksheet — which is equal parts romantic, silly, and fun — into your special day.

    Features of the Lovely Calligraphy Drills Worksheet

    The Lovely Calligraphy Drills worksheet has six different love or romance-themed calligraphy drills. Each drill improves your handle of a calligraphy pen and/or gives you practice with stroke contrast.

    You can find this free download by clicking here. Be sure to print it out on 32# laserjet paper (or another calligraphy-friendly paper)!

    This drills sheet works with any pen, nib, and ink combination that you prefer. If you don’t enjoy using dip pens, you could write the drills with a small brush pen (like the Tombow Fudenosuke – affiliate link) instead.

    You’ll start each drill where you see the tiny heart outlined in black.

    How to Fill Out This Worksheet

    If you have the time, fill this worksheet out with me! The tutorial video below isn’t required viewing, by any means; so if you’re pressed for time, don’t fret if you can’t watch it. I’m just hoping that it proves helpful for calligraphy beginners and/or those who prefer a visual aid.

    Here are some tips to glean from the video:

    • Fill out the worksheet with a pen and ink combination that makes sense for you. If you’re just doing the worksheet for relaxation, use a tried-and-true duo. If you want a challenge, try a new nib.
    • Rotate the page as needed. So many people think they have to keep their paper in a specific position. That’s not true! Rotate your paper often to accommodate the best writing angle for the stroke you’re making.
    • Keep a piece of padding paper underneath the worksheet. This will provide more cushion and spring for your nib.
