Description
About the Hand Lettering 101 eCourse
If you’ve ever wanted to create eye-catching, polished hand lettering, this course will walk you through the process step by step. Over the span of six thoughtfully designed lessons (more than nine hours of video instruction), you’ll learn the techniques, tools, and creative strategies you need to develop a lettering style that’s entirely your own. Along the way, you’ll pick up tips for spacing, embellishment, and composition that you can apply to any creative project.
Supplies
You don’t need anything fancy to start! Begin with a pencil, eraser, ruler, light-colored paper, and any pen. As you work through the lessons, you might decide to add optional tools like Micron pens, colored pencils, a white gel pen, or even watercolor and a pointed pen for special effects.
Course Structure
Each lesson includes several instructional videos and a recorded class discussion where common questions are answered and extra tips are shared. Many lessons include a quiz and/or a helpful PDF to enhance your learning experience and reinforce important concepts. I recommend pacing yourself at one lesson every 7–10 days — enough time to practice and build momentum without rushing.
Lesson Overview
- Lesson 1: The Basics
Create a self-assessment piece you’ll revisit in Lesson 6, then learn the foundational terminology of lettering — from the difference between calligraphy, typography, and hand lettering to the vocabulary that will help you talk about letterforms with confidence. We’ll also review tools and supplies that can enhance your practice.
- Lesson 2: Foundational Letterforms
Practice basic block lettering forms, starting with serif and sans serif styles, then explore variations. You’ll begin building your own custom alphabet while focusing on proportion, consistency, and personal style.
- Lesson 3: Script Lettering + Flourishes
Get comfortable with script lettering, then add flourishes for elegance and flair. You’ll learn how to keep your script style consistent and how to blend script into block lettering for visual variety.
- Lesson 4: Kerning + Layouts
Discover how to adjust letter spacing in context and create layouts that flow beautifully. We’ll cover balance, visual hierarchy, and spacing, then walk through designing and refining a complete composition.
- Lesson 5: Artistic Effects
Make your lettering pop with impactful treatments like 3D forms, ombré gradients, intertwined letters, and illustrated elements. These effects help your work stand out and add personality.
- Lesson 6: Applying Concepts
Re-create the piece you made in Lesson 1, applying everything you’ve learned. This before/after comparison gives you a clear, satisfying view of your progress and personal style growth.

I have long admired the work that Lindsay does with her TPK brand. Her passion and dedication to both calligraphy and lettering shine through in everything she shares. Lindsay consistently goes above and beyond to provide new and exciting ways to learn and practice the art of lettering in a joyful and approachable manner. The Hand Lettering 101 eCourse is a testament to her commitment and generosity in sharing her knowledge and skills. Beginners will find her explanations clear and easy to understand, accompanied by encouragement and support. Meanwhile, those who are more experienced in calligraphy and lettering will benefit from her insights, which can help to expand their thinking, encourage creativity, and introduce new techniques and tools.

Once again, Lindsey knocks it out of the park! I have always been intimidated by hand lettering but she breaks it down in a way that makes it so easy and achievable. I am genuinely shocked by what I was able to create as I followed along the videos in the this course. I’ve come away with so many ideas for projects and styles, and I feel confident in my skills. Lindsey is such a kind, supportive presence, and an excellent teacher. 10/10, highly recommend!

I really had a lot of fun doing this course – not that it was a walk in the park, there’s a lot to do and learn! However that actually made it more fun as well as great value. Everything was very bite size and built on the previous activity – but at the end I look back and think gosh, that was a lot of learning. I particularly liked that pretty much every lesson includes a “follow along with me” activity which is actually feasible in the time given (with a little judicious pausing now and then, especially for some of thing things you want to practise again and again). Watching the recording of class discussions and reading the Discord community (so grateful it’s not Facebook!) to see how other students approached the exercises was also helpful and made it feel much more like I was taking part in something, not just consuming and forgetting, which I often do with online courses.
I’m guilty of buying many, many courses and books with the best intentions and then getting distracted or discouraged halfway through – I’ve actually completed every exercises in this one, seen progress with my “before and after” exercise, and am looking forward to continuing to apply the techniques and my new confidence in my ability to progress. I think whether you’re a complete beginner, or a more experienced artist looking for a new approach, you’ll enjoy this course for both what it teaches you and the way it’s presented.

I loved this course ! I feel I’m not artistic but this has opened my mind to so many ways to improve my hand lettering and so many ways to use with other projects. This is one of the best courses I have taken. It is so worth it being a premium member, I recommend it for everyone.
Thank you !!!

Although I have some experience with calligraphy, I didn’t really understand what hand lettering was before taking this course. The course was fun, challenging, and I learned a number of new techniques. Two big takeaways for me: 1) The course opened my eyes to hand lettering that was all around me. Suddenly I am critiquing every food label, greeting card and billboard, and I am starting to develop an eye for what I like and what I’m not so crazy about. 2) I was shocked at my progression from the first simple exercise to the final assignment. It is proof positive of how much I have learned in just a few weeks of lessons. Lindsey is a fantastic instructor and uses a step by step approach that doesn’t intimidate. This is a great introduction to the art of hand lettering.

My grandmother and I had so much fun doing this together! We learned so many new things and got really creative. This is so useful because I can use it for so many different things such as, post cards, signs, bookmarks, gift ideas, and impressing my friends with my amazing hand lettering!!!!!!!!!!! You gave me a jumping off point for my own creativity. I loved that you provided printables for me to help with my creative juices!! 🙂 This course provides a life long skill for you to use. -Peyton THANK YOU!!!!!

A very enjoyable course. I have returned to learning calligraphy over the past 18 months and when this course came up I thought ‘why not?’ I am not artistic in any way so some of the exercises I found challenging but very enjoyable nonetheless and looking back on some of the ‘art’ work I did I am quite proud of it.
Lyndsey takes you through the course step by step and explains each step clearly. I am just about to embark on the final ‘assignment’ and am looking forward to using the tips and skills Lyndsey has taught over the last six sessions.
If, like me you have no artistic skills but would like to broaden your writing skills to include Hand Lettering, this is the course for you to dip your toe in and see if it’s something that interests you.
I am extremely happy I joined the course and now have additional skills (some artistic too!) that I can use in the future.
A very good course.
Thank you Lyndsey.

This has been a fun course for me. If you dabbled with bubble letters and doodling in your teens like I did, you’ll find that Lindsey will take you to the next level and beyond. I came to join TPK as a premium member to learn more about calligraphy, and have been pleasantly surprised with the other art skills in other areas that she provides. I didn’t think this would be my cup of tea at first, but tried it anyway and thoroughly enjoyed it. Her assignments were therapeutic exercises that calm the mind and body. This course would be a great parent/child activity to do together.

As someone who has practiced calligraphy for over 50 years, Lindsey’s course encouraged me to think outside the box of classical calligraphy and be more innovative. Lindsey has a natural flair for elegance and beauty, and imbues every element of this well structured, well documented course. Whatever your background, this course offers a refreshing opportunity to revisit the basics and build new expertise with Lindseys’ patient guidance. I highly recommend this course for anyone who loves to create.
