"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

The other day, I saw a video on Instagram that inspired me to develop this “juicy” brush pen calligraphy tutorial! In it, the artist utilized several common art supplies to make playful and eye-catching lettering letters. I modified the supply list to fit the things that I have available to me, and I hope that you’ll do the same! To create this tutorial, you’ll need:

    • Brush pens (or broad-tipped markers such as Crayola)
    • A pencil + eraser
    • A fine-tipped paintbrush
    • A white gel pen (such as Gelly Roll) + a black pen

    1. Make a Draft of the Letters

Before you begin writing, you’ll want to use a ruler and a pencil to map out some guidelines. You can either make straight, uniform guidelines, or you can make playful guidelines, like I did.

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
I’ve got four sets of guidelines here, which I will use to write four address lines.

Next, exert significant pressure on your pencil to make a draft of your letters. Try to write as neatly as possible, as you’ll be tracing over these letters with your brush pen later!

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
Feel free to use a mix of print and cursive!

Complete this step by lightly erasing over your guidelines and letters. You should be able to see the letters just enough to be able to trace over them in the next step!

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
The fact that you wrote with significant pressure ensures that you will be able to see the lettering even after you erase it.

    2. Trace Over the Lettering with Brush Pens

Get out your brush pens (or broad-tipped markers) and use them to trace over your pencil draft. Try to use two tones of marker for your lettering!

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
I used Janet Style calligraphy for the top line and Sans Serif lettering for the bottom line.

Continue writing until you’re happy with the layout and color scheme!

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
I used the vintage handkerchief background as the inspiration for my color scheme here.

    3. Add Water

Use a fine-tipped paintbrush and clean water to write over the lettering. The goal here is to get the colors within the letters to bleed into each other a bit!

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
You can blend up the two tones of colors within your letters by going over them with a wet paintbrush.

    4. Trace Around the Letters

Once the water has dried (~3 minutes), use a black pen to trace around all of the letters.

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
I like to use a Pilot G2 05 pen for this step!

Once you finish, your brush pen calligraphy should look something like this:

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

    5. Add Shadows

Now, take your pencil and use it to draw shadows to the right of every letter. The shadows should hug the contours of all the right-side edges of every letter! Each shadow should extend about 2 mm (1/16″) to the right.

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

Continue to draw shadows until every letter has a shadow.

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
It’s best to use a non-mechanial pencil for this step because the lead tends to be softer!

    6. Add Highlights

The last step in this “juicy” brush pen calligraphy tutorial is to add some highlights. The highlights will give the letters some great dimension! To add highlights, simply use your white gel pen to draw a contoured line along the left edges of every letter. Some letters, like the “P” in “Soprano”, may have more than one left edge!

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
I like to use Gelly Roll white pens for this step, but you could also use Bleed Proof White ink and a small brush or a dip pen!

Drawing in these highlights is important because the highlights work together with the shadows to convince the viewer that the light source is coming from the left.

    That’s It!

If you use this lettering technique for mail art, consider treating the envelope with Microglaze. You can read more about that in this article! A color coordinated postage stamp collage won’t look out of place here, for sure.

"Juicy" Brush Pen Calligraphy Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
I love the Janet Style calligraphy (“Sara Cooper”, “Cheyenne, Wyoming”) on this envelope!

If you aren’t familiar with using brush pens, take a look at the Using Brush Pens for Calligraphy article. In it, you’ll find tips for using brush pens as well as links to free printable brush pen worksheets!

I hope that you enjoyed this lettering tutorial! Try using this technique on anything — it’s great for bullet journals, sketchbooks, posters, and anything else you want to add lettering to.

Thanks very much for reading TPK, and enjoy the rest of your week!

    Warmly,

Beautiful as usual but I have a love-hate relationship with Gel markers. I love Tombow markers and Micron pens. Gel pens however stop working soon after I buy them. I have tried to store them every way possible. I read that they should be stored horizontally. I tried that and even tried slanted-horizontal storage like the holder for Tombow markers had where I bought them. White is the worse culprit and I hate wasting more money on them. I can see all the ink in the barrel but it just refuses to come out or it skips terribly because the flow is not even. One person said to heat the tip-heck, why not since it wasn’t working anyway-nope. The companies must be making a mint off them because you have to keep buying them over and over if you want/need them. If it’s a larger tip they don’t stop as soon but the fine line ones are a waste of money. Metallic gel pens are aggravating too. I don’t think I owned a gel marker I used all the ink in-it stops working before that ever happens. I’m not talking about my favorite gel writing pens Uni-Ball Signo 207 & 307. I use them all the way up, I’m talking the the ones with pretty colors, Gelly Rolls and similar brands-I’ve tried so many over the years. If you have any tips I would be grateful. In the meantime I use Pen White or Bleed Proof White by Dr. Ph Martins but a quick and easy would be wonderful. I’m just afraid of wasting one more penny on the “pretty” gel pens.

I agree that white pens aren’t reliable! It seems like some are duds, and others are able to keep working for a couple of years. I don’t quite get that! I like to use white gel pens in tutorials because they are more approachable for most people, but honestly, I’d say if you’re comfortable using white ink (and it sounds like you are), that’s what I would use! You know that white ink will work every single time, so it’s often a better choice!

✍️ There’s a fresh addition to the TPK Catal ✍️ There’s a fresh addition to the TPK Catalog: The Graceful Ballerina Calligraphy Drill Worksheet

This ballerina is unique among TPK calligraphy drills in that it’s really not that complicated. After a few simple loops, a flourished tutu, and long strokes to make the legs, you have, well, a ballerina! 🩰 The most difficult part is getting the outline right; but even that isn’t too bad because you’ve got a traceable outline included in your worksheet set.

The beauty of the flourished ballerina? She makes *anything* look elegant: cards, envelopes, gift tags, whatever. My recommendation is to feature her on your next envelope. She’ll add a “wow” factor and allow you to left-justify the address, which is always a relief (no need to bother with centering)!

To find her, visit the link in my bio, then navigate to the Blog!

✨I’ve been making these little calligraphy Chr ✨I’ve been making these little calligraphy Christmas trees for years. They’re a go-to whenever I need a quick gift tag, envelope flourish, or something festive that doesn’t require a whole afternoon.

They look fancy, but they’re really just simple strokes stacked in different patterns. Truly: once you get the rhythm down, you can make a tree in under 30 seconds. 🎄

If you want to try them (there are six styles!), the tutorial is on the TPK Blog, and it’s called

It’s very beginner-friendly, video-based, and a great way to get some creativity in during a busy season. I hope you love it as much as I do. 💛

Inside the PDF you’ll find four designs: Festive Frida, Flourished Tree, Pine Boughs, and Merry & Bright. They’re all hand-drawn, and they make even the simplest wrapping look bespoke and artistic. 🎨

Pro tip: If you’ve got a bit of extra time, add a pop of watercolor or some gold dots; and consider mounting the tag on a contrasting piece of cardstock for extra oomph.

The other day, I was thinking about sending out ho The other day, I was thinking about sending out holiday cards, and I immediately dismissed the thought with, “I have zero time to calligraph envelopes for those.” ✍️

... But is that true? I put it to the test for the latest article on the TPK Blog. Using some time-saving tricks I’ve learned over the years (like using a watery ink, a bouncy calligraphy style, and minimal pencil guidelines), I timed myself making three envelope concepts. Two of them took 5 minutes or less. The most time-intensive took 5 minutes, 30 seconds. The envelopes still turned out looking elegant, especially with the help of some artistic postage stamp collages. 💌

After I chose this music to accompany this reel, i After I chose this music to accompany this reel, it dawned on me: drawing a calligraphy medallion is like, well, Belle’s arc with the Beast.

At first, it’s a bit of a weird situation. Strange shapes, questionable structure, possibly some growling (à la “YOU WILL JOIN ME FOR DINNER. That’s not a request!”) when the inevitable ink smudge happens. You keep thinking, “I’m not sure why I’m doing this ... should I hop on Felipe and gallop away?” 🐎

But something shifts as the medallion starts to come to life. And when you finish that last detail and pull back, the music swells. Light bursts from your paper like it did from Beast’s digits as he transformed into a stunningly beautiful prince. ✨ You’re practically in a ballroom celebrating, and, wait, did your furniture just turn into an adoring crowd that’s celebrating your fortitude and skill?

(And now you know how my mind works 🧠 ... I love a good metaphor, no matter how weak it may be!)

To learn how to make a calligraphy medallion, just search for “calligraphy medallion” on the TPK site (link in bio). You’ll find both free Blog tutorials and detailed premium worksheets.

... I’ll show myself out now. 🙈
