Description
About the Hand Lettering 101 eCourse
If you’ve ever wanted to create eye-catching, polished hand lettering, this course will walk you through the process step by step. Over the span of six thoughtfully designed lessons (more than nine hours of video instruction), you’ll learn the techniques, tools, and creative strategies you need to develop a lettering style that’s entirely your own. Along the way, you’ll pick up tips for spacing, embellishment, and composition that you can apply to any creative project.
Supplies
You don’t need anything fancy to start! Begin with a pencil, eraser, ruler, light-colored paper, and any pen. As you work through the lessons, you might decide to add optional tools like Micron pens, colored pencils, a white gel pen, or even watercolor and a pointed pen for special effects.
Course Structure
Each lesson includes several instructional videos and a recorded class discussion where common questions are answered and extra tips are shared. Many lessons include a quiz and/or a helpful PDF to enhance your learning experience and reinforce important concepts. I recommend pacing yourself at one lesson every 7–10 days — enough time to practice and build momentum without rushing.
Lesson Overview
- Lesson 1: The Basics
Create a self-assessment piece you’ll revisit in Lesson 6, then learn the foundational terminology of lettering — from the difference between calligraphy, typography, and hand lettering to the vocabulary that will help you talk about letterforms with confidence. We’ll also review tools and supplies that can enhance your practice.
- Lesson 2: Foundational Letterforms
Practice basic block lettering forms, starting with serif and sans serif styles, then explore variations. You’ll begin building your own custom alphabet while focusing on proportion, consistency, and personal style.
- Lesson 3: Script Lettering + Flourishes
Get comfortable with script lettering, then add flourishes for elegance and flair. You’ll learn how to keep your script style consistent and how to blend script into block lettering for visual variety.
- Lesson 4: Kerning + Layouts
Discover how to adjust letter spacing in context and create layouts that flow beautifully. We’ll cover balance, visual hierarchy, and spacing, then walk through designing and refining a complete composition.
- Lesson 5: Artistic Effects
Make your lettering pop with impactful treatments like 3D forms, ombré gradients, intertwined letters, and illustrated elements. These effects help your work stand out and add personality.
- Lesson 6: Applying Concepts
Re-create the piece you made in Lesson 1, applying everything you’ve learned. This before/after comparison gives you a clear, satisfying view of your progress and personal style growth.

I’ve dabbled in calligraphy for years, but found the focus of this specific course on hand lettering to be spot on for me right now. It was well-structured, informative and paced perfectly. I feel inspired to go back to other areas of calligraphy with more techniques at my fingertips. I learned a lot and, above all, it’s a fun course!

I had such a blast during this course. I came in with very little experience in hand lettering or creating a composition, and I left with a few finished pieces that I’m so proud of! Lindsey really breaks down various elements and techniques into easily understandable, actionable steps. It was really fun to see what came next and to watch my skills grow in real time. I highly recommend this course for anyone interested in learning hand lettering!

This was such a fun, informative, and creativity-stoking course! I did have some hand lettering experience when I started, but there were so many great tips and concepts that really clarified things for me.
I especially loved the interactive format – there were so many kind creatives going through the course with me; I could share my work for encouragement and, if wanted, critique; and the interweaved live meetings were GOLD!
Thank you Lindsey for creating this fabulous course!
