Circus Lettering Printable Exemplar + Video Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

On Friday, I wrote a tutorial about how to make “Circus Lettering”, a fun lettering style inspired by vintage circus and carnival posters. In that tutorial, I focused on the letter “M”, and I tried to provide some general rules for writing all letters using the style. As I was writing, though, it occurred to me that you may have questions about how to make certain other letters of the alphabet — an “O”, for example, doesn’t follow the same rules as an “M”! With that in mind, I decided to make a printable exemplar.

    The Circus Lettering Exemplar

Circus Lettering Printable Exemplar + Video Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

The Circus Lettering Exemplar exists to show you exactly how to write each character A-Z plus numbers. In the exemplar, you’ll learn how to use your pencil to draft out a letter from scratch. The last step of each letter requires “inking” over your pencil draft, which the exemplar also shows.

Materials Needed to Create Circus Lettering

    1. A Pen + Paper

To create Circus Lettering (and most hand-lettering styles), you can use practically any high-quality paper. I normally go for 32# laserjet. Choose a permanent pen that won’t smudge if you run an eraser over it! I like using a straight dip pen fitted with a Nikko G nib and sumi ink, but you can also use a Micron pen or a fine-tipped permanent marker.

Straight Calligraphy Pens | The Postman's Knock
If you’re not sure whether your pen of choice smudges, try making some scribbles with it. Wait five minutes, then run an eraser over the scribbles. If the ink smudges, don’t use that pen!

    2. A Parallel Glider (a.k.a. “Rolling Ruler”)

A parallel glider isn’t a must for hand-lettering, but it will make your life a lot easier. Watch me use it in the tutorial video included in this post, and you can decide based on that whether you’d like one or not!

Circus Lettering Printable Exemplar + Video Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
I bought my parallel glider on Amazon. I’ve also seen them in local art stores! It requires more of an investment than a regular ruler, but the time it’s saved me has made the cost worth it!

    3. The TPK Circus Lettering Exemplar

The Circus Lettering Exemplar makes it easy to write letters because it walks you through the steps required to create each letter. There’s no guesswork involved! If you prefer not to use the exemplar, however, you can always apply the lettering rules set forth in the Circus Lettering Tutorial. I only focus on the letter “M” in that tutorial, so rounded letters may prove challenging to make, but I know that you can figure it out!

Circus Lettering Printable Exemplar + Video Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
This printable exemplar shows you how to write every single letter from start to finish. You can learn more about it by clicking here.

    Video Tutorial

If you’re anything like me, you probably learn best through a combination of seeing written examples (like in the exemplar) and real-life demonstrations. In the video below, I’ll make some Circus Lettering so you can see how it’s made and get some tips about lettering in general!

(You can find this video on YouTube by clicking here.)

    Uses for Circus Lettering

As you saw in Friday’s blog post, Circus Lettering makes a stunning addition to mail art, and I love it for that. It combines so well with other font and calligraphy styles!

"Circus Lettering" Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
Circus Lettering contrasts so well with elegant Janet Style calligraphy!

Like any cool hand-lettering style, you can apply Circus Lettering to everyday projects to make them more eye-catching. For example, I used Circus Lettering to make a title for the Birthdays page in my agenda/bullet journal.

Circus Lettering Printable Exemplar + Video Tutorial | The Postman's Knock
This lettering adds personality to an otherwise plain bullet journal page.

I think this lettering style would also be great for designing signs or posters for events! It’s very showy and eye-catching, so it’s a perfect fit if you want something to get noticed.

I hope that you enjoyed this video tutorial and that you like the exemplar! The secret to this lettering style is embellishments and shadows, and as long as you add a little bit of both to each letter, you’ll end up with awesome results.

Thanks very much for reading, and enjoy the rest of your week!

    Warmly,

As soon as I saw this, I was thrilled! I love the idea of circus lettering (it’s so fun!) and what you put up on Friday was enough to get my creative juices flowing. I was wondering, though – will you be releasing a free exemplar (just a simple show of the alphabet), too? Thank you for this new style!

Hi Kel! I don’t have a free exemplar; I’m sorry! I usually make one, but in this case, I just didn’t have the time. That said, there is a photo of the exemplar I have in my office in this blog post — look for the “A Surprise Free Printable” header!

I noticed that you use blackwing pencils sometimes. Have you tried the 10001? It was created for a Japanese mathematics teacher, and they are fabulous. The graphite is much firmer than the standard black palomino, which is what I like about it. I love all of the freebies and help that you offer, so I thought I would try to offer some back.

There is nothing like a clean, well-organized wate There is nothing like a clean, well-organized watercolor chart. I used to make watercolor chart layouts using math and grids (which, trust me, was painful for someone like me, who doesn’t *love* numbers/measuring/calculations) ... then it occurred to me that I could use Photoshop to give myself a little boost. Much less math and fretting, which for me equals much more joy! Palette is from @greenleafblue — she made it so I could have a gorgeous palette for “The Calligraphy Book”, and this color chart definitely helped to boost the aesthetic of an already stunning supply. 🎨😍

If you’re curious about this technique for making a watercolor chart, you can search the TPK website for “watercolor chart” ... there’s a detailed blog post over how to use the template method that I’m showing you here!

An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of thos An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of those tools that is indispensable for a lot of applications. It was designed to make precise cuts, which, of course, it does well! But, you can also use it to scrape off unwanted ink smears (pro tip: after the fact, you can smooth disturbed paper fibers with a pebble), create interesting interior cuts, trim tiny details that scissors can’t reach, make stencils and templates, refine collage elements, and gently correct small drawing or calligraphy mistakes.

I have used X-Acto knives for many TPK Blog tutorials, but up until last week, I’d never written a guide that puts the X-Acto knife front and center. That guide now exists, and you can find it by visiting the link 🔗 in my profile. Be sure to watch the tutorial video!

Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a nutshell at TPK! 🥜

This year, I loved teaching at @thehappyevercrafter’s Workshop Week and participating in @calmingcalligraphy’s World Calligraphy as Meditation Day. And seeing the TPK calligraphy kit featured in @newyorkermag’s 2025 holiday gift guide was an unexpected (and delightful) cherry on top! 🍒

So much of what happened over the past year, though, was shaped by the TPK Premium community. Their questions and feedback helped guide Hand Lettering 101, while their encouragement fueled tutorials on topics ranging from turning red wine into calligraphy ink to illustrating recipes, painting with a wedge brush, and creating greeting cards and envelope art. 💌 That same support made it possible to create new worksheets and resources that others were able to enjoy as well, which I’m very grateful for.

For a fuller recap (with helpful links and details) I shared a 2025 reflection on the TPK blog (link in bio).

✨ A little comparison today … because not all ✨ A little comparison today ... because not all golds behave the same.

✦ Finetec gold → bright, cheerful, and versatile
✦ Greenleaf & Blueberry faux brass → softer, muted, and stunning
✦ Yasutomo pale gold → velvety, subtle shimmer with a sensible amount of sparkle

I love having all three on hand and choosing based on the feel I want for a project. It’s tough to go wrong! ✨
