    Calligraphy, Calligraphy Drills, Merchandise, Worksheets

TPK’s latest Not Your Average Calligraphy Drills packet features a delightful culinary theme. This collection of drills embraces all sorts of foods — from jalapeños to ice cream — to exercise your pointed pen skills!

Not Your Average Calligraphy Drills: Food Edition
Traditional calligraphy drills have never been my — er — cup of tea. That might be why I love practicing calligraphy by making projects like flourished teapots!

Fact: doing calligraphy drills will improve your pointed pen skills. They’re good for all levels of calligraphers: beginners will benefit from enhanced pen control. Intermediate calligraphers will experience greater confidence when writing letters and flourishes. Even advanced calligraphers do drills — often as a warmup — to ensure a steady hand.

    Calligraphy Drills
The Not Your Average Calligraphy Drills: Food Edition worksheet is the latest addition to the Not Your Average Calligraphy Drills collection.

So, there you have it. Doing calligraphy drills can benefit anyone. For the longest time, though, I didn’t embrace drills. Honestly, I’ve always found traditional drills to be pretty boring. And yet — I wanted my calligraphy skills to grow. That’s why I started doing unconventional calligraphy drills; and, ultimately, I created entire themed worksheet sets of unconventional calligraphy drills. The latest addition to those worksheet sets is the Not Your Average Calligraphy Drills: Food Edition worksheet!

    Meet TPK’s Food Drills Packet

In Not Your Average Calligraphy Drills: Food Edition, every drill relates to food or drink! You’ll start out by writing simple drills like “Chopsticks” and “String Bean”. These drills help you to practice simple strokes, and they warm you up for the rest of the worksheet.

    Doing calligraphy drills

Next, you move on to square drills, which are a bit more challenging. (Don’t worry: the worksheet will show you exactly how to create each one and provide you with tracing practice!)

    Square food drills

After the square drills, you’ll take on circular drills. These drills provide a new kind of practice: dashed lines. I like writing over dashed lines because they force you to focus on stroke contrast as you’re creating a drill.

    Food-themed calligraphy drills

The Food Drills packet concludes with three larger drills: “Water”, “Ice Cream”, and “Teapot”. These larger exercises give you quality practice while they show you how to create a work of art!

    Teapot calligraphy drill
After you get the hang of creating this teapot drill, try adding it to envelope art or incorporating it into a sketchbook page. It’s classy and fabulous!

Where to find Not Your Average Calligraphy Drills: Food Edition

The Food Edition drills packet is available in the TPK Catalog for $6.00. Right now, there are three other NYACD packets available as well: Garden Edition, Under the Sea Edition, and Fairytale Edition.  Regardless of which drills packet(s) you choose to take on, make sure you print the worksheet(s) on 32# laserjet paper (or another smooth, quality paper). Then, use your favorite nib/pen/ink combination to get down to business!

    GET THE FOOD DRILLS PACKET

    Ice cream calligraphy drill

I hope that you enjoy filling out these new drills as much as I liked creating them! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in the comments. Happy practicing and enjoy!!

    Warmly,

Hi Lindsey! Anyone can benefit from calligraphy drills, but I’ve never been big on them. I used to think traditional drills were plain. Yet, I wanted my calligraphic abilities to grow. I, therefore, came up with all sorts of inventive calligraphy exercises when I don’t want to pay do my homework, and eventually developed whole workbook sets around them.

I love watching project timelapses — like a comp I love watching project timelapses — like a complicated calligraphy or watercolor project coming together in a matter of seconds. A cleaning timelapse, then, is a no-brainer! My friend mentioned that she does these when she needs a little extra motivation to tidy up. I was totally feeling that this weekend, so I made a couple of these. The anticipation of knowing that I’d get to watch the room become neat in an instant was actually incredibly motivating. It’s the little things, right? 😉 #cleaningtimelapse #cleaning #tidyingup #neatandtidy

Some recipes aren’t just instructions — they’re memories on a page. 💛 I spent some time illustrating one of my favorites, and it turned into the sweetest (literally) keepsake. Calligraphy, watercolor, and a little patience bring the story of a dish to life.

If you’d like to try illustrating your favorite recipe, too, I shared the full process (with helpful printables) on the TPK Blog — link in bio. ✨
