Description
If you have a fair amount of calligraphy experience, this course may be too basic for you. To find out for sure, take this short quiz!
This self-paced Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Online Course is every bit as effective as my in-person calligraphy workshops. There are no time or demonstration constraints, so I was able to include absolutely everything that you need to know! On film, I am able to communicate concepts from different shooting angles, and you can pause and re-watch videos as needed. If you don’t quite understand how to do something, there’s a “Discussion” portion under each lesson where you can ask questions! All lessons include a short quiz and homework assignments. Here’s the course layout:
Lesson 1: Supplies
- Video: Supplies (5:52) – Includes a detailed explanation of why you need certain calligraphy supplies and how to prepare them for use.
Lesson 2: Faux Calligraphy
- Video: Faux Calligraphy (9:36) – You’ll learn how to create faux calligraphy and why it’s an important concept to master.

- Video 4: Embrace Calligraphy Exemplars (1:12) – This video explains why you don’t need to commit calligraphy letterforms to memory.
- Video 5: Tulips Project (5:38) – The final project of this lesson combines art and a new calligraphy style to solidify your understanding of how to use the straight dip pen.
Lesson 4: The Oblique Calligraphy Pen
- Video 1: Oblique Pen Overview (10:10) – Learn why the oblique pen can be immensely helpful for most right-handed people, and some lefties as well.
- Video 2: Oblique Pen Letter Practice (11:00) – This video will teach you exactly how to use the oblique pen to write out fancy, flourished calligraphy letters.
- Video 3: Oblique Pen Word Practice (6:39) – In this video, you’ll utilize what you learned in Video 2 to write out words.

The course ends with a short video explaining your post-course homework. The total viewing time for this course is approximately two hours, but I’d recommend allocating two months to do everything that you’re asked to do in the course.

Hello, I am new to calligraphy and i have been searching everywhere to learn as much as i can and found TPK. I got hooked immediately!! Can’t wait to learn from you Lindsey!
Maria Carlstrom –
Just finished this e-course and LOVED IT! It was the perfect way for me to get comfortable with what I’ve learned through the TPK tutorials, my personal learning style (self-taught “trial and error method”) and at my own pace and schedule. After completing this course and, as a beginner, I feel I have a head start on my learning curve to improve this new skill. I love creating mail art and following the tutorials; Lindsey does such a good job of explaining tips and techniques that help you create beautiful calligraphy and in a way that is “down to earth” and organic; like having a face-to-face, private lesson with her. Yet, her style is not intimidating or “dictatorial”; she merely shares her personal experiences, makes recommendations which allow you to make personal choices about nibs and holders that fit your personal preference. Additionally, it is not too basic. For me, the lesson on using the oblique pen was so helpful! I tried using the oblique pen on my own with “meh” results that left me disappointed. But after watching that lesson and doing the practice sheets, I feel encouraged by what I can accomplish now that I have the basics. I highly recommend this very reasonably priced, and super convenient way of learning calligraphy TPK’s way. And, because I’ve downloaded the course, I can always go back and watch those sections I want to reinforce…how convenient is that!!!

This course is amazing. I would certainly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more at their own pace. I have really enjoyed watching the videos and being able to print the practice sheets off as many times as you want. I start my practice sessions off by doing some of the letters on the alphabet sheet. Brilliant course which is really engaging. Thank you

This is something that I dream of a way back. I have taken courses as a student and were not able to understand due to the lack of interpreter service as I am deaf (hard of hearing). What a surprise to see that the courses has captions on it. Im ready to go and learn. Gotta tell my pen pal friends in the Fountain Pens Friends about this courses, Im sure they will love it. Congratulations on this excellent ideas of yours and I hope more people enroll in this courses.
