Watercolor Roses Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial

    November 9, 2023

In such a fast-paced world, it’s difficult to keep in touch with all the important people in your life. The holidays, however, offer the perfect excuse for sending mail that says, “I care about you.” With that in mind, I designed this lovely card and envelope duo.

Watercolor Roses Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope

This watercolor roses holiday card combines the traditional holiday colors of red and green with a timeless floral motif. Make it on a lazy morning or a quiet afternoon, when you have some time to enjoy the creation process! Those who feel intimidated by illustration work will be happy to hear that today’s tutorial includes both printable and traceable elements to make easy work of this gorgeous greeting card.

    1. Gather Your Supplies

This card tutorial requires a collection of supplies that you can tweak to fit what you have on hand.

    • 80 lb. drawing paper (affiliate link)
    • Scissors
    • Pencil + eraser
    • Your favorite nib + pen holder combination (I used a Brause EF66 nib in an oblique pen)
    • Waterproof ink
    • Blank watercolor greeting card (affiliate link)
    • Watercolor palette
    • Size 3 paintbrush
    • Bubble mailer (used is fine) or pop dots (affiliate link)
    • Glue or double-sided tape
    • Optional: light box, Hand-Drawn Banner Printable, Illustrated Roses Template

    2. Make a “Happy Holidays” Banner

First, begin by drawing a banner on your 80# drawing paper. For a shortcut, you can print the Hand-Drawn Banner Printable directly onto your drawing paper (after cutting the paper to fit into your printer). Don’t forget to add some short, densely-spaced lines to represent shadows.

If you don’t have drawing paper, be sure to draw or print your banner on a non-flimsy, pointed pen calligraphy-friendly paper. (Laserjet paper could work, but I find that drawing paper has a more elegant feel to it.)

Once you’ve drawn (or printed) your banner and added shadows to it, it’s time to write calligraphy. Begin by drawing two pencil guidelines parallel to the top and bottom lines of the banner to ensure neat calligraphy. Your guidelines should be about 0.4″ (1 cm) from the top and base of the banner.

DIY Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

Then, use Kaitlin Style calligraphy to write a quick “Happy Holidays” in the banner. “Happy” should go on the left side of the banner, and “Holidays” on the right.

DIY Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial | The Postman's Knock

Once your ink dries, erase any pencil guidelines.

Next, cut out the banner. For ease and aesthetics, don’t cut exactly along the outside guideline. Instead, leave a little bit of space between the banner and the edge of the paper.

There’s about 1/8″ (~3.5 mm) of space along the edges of the banner pictured below.

DIY Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial (Includes Free Banner Printable) | The Postman's Knock

    3. Make the Watercolor Roses Card

Now, get out your blank A7 watercolor card. You can easily create one by cutting a piece of watercolor paper to 10″ x 7″ (25.4 cm x 17.8 cm) and folding it in half, or you can buy pre-made blank cards. Once you have your card, plan out where you’d like to put your banner on the finished card. Use a pencil to trace around the banner in that position. When you finish tracing, set the banner aside for the time being.

DIY Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial (Includes Free Banner Printable) | The Postman's Knock
It’s necessary to use a watercolor paper card for this project because you’ll be painting on this card.

Now, start to draw vintage roses on your greeting card. You’re welcome to freehand draw (find a tutorial here), or you can trace over TPK’s Illustrated Roses Template, which is available for a nominal fee.

    GET THE ILLUSTRATED ROSES TEMPLATE
This printable has made my life easier when it comes to making several different projects.

Next, use a light box to trace over the rose illustration template (trust me: a light box is one of those things that will come in handy for a variety of projects). Be sure to use waterproof ink and a medium-flex nib, like a crowquill or a Nikko G, for the illustration work.

Note that you don’t need to draw roses in the area that the banner will cover.

DIY Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial (Includes Free Banner Printable) | The Postman's Knock

Once all your ink is dry, you can start watercoloring the floral motif. Use red for the roses and green for the leaves and the stems.

    4. Glue the Banner to the Card

After you’ve finished painting, seek out a cushioned mailer like the one pictured below.

DIY Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial (Includes Free Banner Printable) | The Postman's Knock

I like to cut up the mailer and use double-stick tape or glue to affix it to the back of my banner.

DIY Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial (Includes Free Banner Printable) | The Postman's Knock

Then, apply glue or double stick tape to cushiony stuff on the back of your banner. Flip the banner over, place it exactly where you want it to be on the card, and apply gentle pressure to make it stick.

Note that you can use pop dots in place of the bubble mailer. They are specifically designed for adding standout elements, so the process is super easy. To see pop dots in action, see this video tutorial (around the 3:50 mark).

You will be rewarded with a festive holiday card featuring intricate illustration and a 3D element!

    5. Make a Beautiful Envelope

Every beautiful card deserves an equally lovely envelope, so I want to show you a quick way to craft a vessel that’s up to the job of carrying your DIY holiday card.

DIY Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial (Includes Free Banner Printable) | The Postman's Knock

First, calligraph your mail recipient’s name(s) on one of the smaller two banners in the Hand-Drawn Banner Printable. Then, use watercolor to add a bit of shade to the banner.

DIY Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial (Includes Free Banner Printable) | The Postman's Knock
I used Magnetite watercolor to add a touch of shading to my banner.

Cut out your banner when the paint and ink is dry, then choose a colored envelope to put it on. I am using an A7 envelope in “Chocolate“, but whatever you have available will work. Then, draw a couple of wavy guidelines on the envelope.

DIY Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial (Includes Free Banner Printable) | The Postman's Knock
If you’ve chosen a dark-colored envelope, you’ll want a white mechanical pencil for drawing guidelines.

Calligraph your address in a pretty Janet Style calligraphy and white ink, then add a few interesting postage stamps.

DIY Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial (Includes Free Banner Printable) | The Postman's Knock

Next, glue down the banner with the recipient’s name.

DIY Holiday Card + Artistic Envelope Tutorial (Includes Free Banner Printable) | The Postman's Knock

For a little bit of pizazz, you can add a few stars and dots:

And that’s it! Pair your envelope with the pretty card you just made, and you’ve got a gorgeous duo that will delight any recipient.

I like this project concept because it’s elegant and pretty, with rich colors and a classic look. Remember that you can modify it to suit the supplies that you have on hand and your aesthetic preferences. Maybe you don’t follow the tutorial exactly, and that’s fine! I encourage you to make it yours and have fun with it.

Thanks so much for reading today’s tutorial. Cheers to a happy, healthy, and creative holiday season!

    Warmly,

Every time I see a Boulder address I squeak a little – we lived there 6 years while my husband got his PhD from CU. Small world! Thanks for your blog – I have to confess I’m too scared to start ‘real’ calligraphy – I’m afraid it will be one of those unfinished hobbies that I just never got good enough at. I do a LOT of faux stuff though, and I find lots of inspiration through your blog.

My husband is getting his PhD at CU right now (Aerospace Engineering) — which is why we live here, as well! This is our fifth year. 🙂 On another note, it’s okay if you start calligraphy and it falls to the wayside! Your supplies will last a very, very long time, so you can always do it then put it aside at your leisure.

LIndsey, beautiful! <3 Could you make a little tutorial, how to add diacritics to your styles (particularly Kaitlin Style)? I'm interested in polish hooks ("ogonek" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogonek);) like ą, ę, ń, ż, ź. ó… but also spanish and french (ñ, ç). Thank you! Wonderful blog and I learn sooo much from you!

There is nothing like a clean, well-organized wate There is nothing like a clean, well-organized watercolor chart. I used to make watercolor chart layouts using math and grids (which, trust me, was painful for someone like me, who doesn’t *love* numbers/measuring/calculations) ... then it occurred to me that I could use Photoshop to give myself a little boost. Much less math and fretting, which for me equals much more joy! Palette is from @greenleafblue — she made it so I could have a gorgeous palette for “The Calligraphy Book”, and this color chart definitely helped to boost the aesthetic of an already stunning supply. 🎨😍

If you’re curious about this technique for making a watercolor chart, you can search the TPK website for “watercolor chart” ... there’s a detailed blog post over how to use the template method that I’m showing you here!

An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of thos An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of those tools that is indispensable for a lot of applications. It was designed to make precise cuts, which, of course, it does well! But, you can also use it to scrape off unwanted ink smears (pro tip: after the fact, you can smooth disturbed paper fibers with a pebble), create interesting interior cuts, trim tiny details that scissors can’t reach, make stencils and templates, refine collage elements, and gently correct small drawing or calligraphy mistakes.

I have used X-Acto knives for many TPK Blog tutorials, but up until last week, I’d never written a guide that puts the X-Acto knife front and center. That guide now exists, and you can find it by visiting the link 🔗 in my profile. Be sure to watch the tutorial video!

Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a nutshell at TPK! 🥜

This year, I loved teaching at @thehappyevercrafter’s Workshop Week and participating in @calmingcalligraphy’s World Calligraphy as Meditation Day. And seeing the TPK calligraphy kit featured in @newyorkermag’s 2025 holiday gift guide was an unexpected (and delightful) cherry on top! 🍒

So much of what happened over the past year, though, was shaped by the TPK Premium community. Their questions and feedback helped guide Hand Lettering 101, while their encouragement fueled tutorials on topics ranging from turning red wine into calligraphy ink to illustrating recipes, painting with a wedge brush, and creating greeting cards and envelope art. 💌 That same support made it possible to create new worksheets and resources that others were able to enjoy as well, which I’m very grateful for.

For a fuller recap (with helpful links and details) I shared a 2025 reflection on the TPK blog (link in bio).

✦ Finetec gold → bright, cheerful, and versatile
✦ Greenleaf & Blueberry faux brass → softer, muted, and stunning
✦ Yasutomo pale gold → velvety, subtle shimmer with a sensible amount of sparkle

I love having all three on hand and choosing based on the feel I want for a project. It’s tough to go wrong! ✨
