    Free Embellished Quote Calligraphy Worksheet
This T.S. Eliot quote is true all the time, but it feels especially appropriate as we transition into a new year.

2021 is winding down! As we approach the New Year, I’ve been ruminating over how TPK evolved over the past 12 months. Today, we’ll talk about reader favorites, accomplishments, regrets, and what’s in store for 2022.

    What Was Different This Year

As my child (now a 3-year-old) morphed from toddler to little boy, I found myself with more energy — thanks to more sleep! — and time. Both of those factors increase creativity, which resulted in engaging project tutorials and cool content here on the TPK blog. 2021 was the year I found a balance between being a mom and being an artist/entrepreneur, and that feels so refreshing!

    2021 Year in Review
My little guy is growing up! Now that he’s older and more mellow, I’ve found an easy balance between getting to create art (like the watercolor house portrait — probably my favorite 2021 project) and enjoying plenty of family time.

    Newcomer Products

In 2021, several new products made their way into the Digital Catalog and the Supplies Shop. Based on order quantities, the two favorite 2021 newcomers were iron gall ink and parallel gliders. The Dancing Pen Calligraphy Medallions worksheet was the most popular item in the Digital Catalog.

    Favorite 2021 Reader Creations

A look at all the @thepostmansknock tagged posts on Instagram shows that readers were busy being creative this year! While people tried out a variety of projects, I noticed illuminated letters popping up the most consistently. There’s just something irresistible about gold watercolor accents and intricate flourishes — and it helps that TPK’s illuminated letter tutorial includes a foolproof printable!

These illuminated letters were created by TPK readers using The “Cheater’s” Illuminated Letter Tutorial. Clockwise from the top left, creation credit goes to: @beginnershand, @theletteringpeacock, @fierceworkingmama, @lizzielanefarm, @pipscalligraphy, and @mistyobarr.

    Proudest Accomplishment This Year

Earlier this year, I released a redesign of the TPK Modern Calligraphy Starter Kit. Compared to the old version of the kit, the new version has a lot of bells and whistles: a beautiful redesigned box, a beginner workbook (that coordinates with the Beginner’s Course!), an intricate nib tin, a custom cleaning cloth, and a perfect little art water cup. Designing and sourcing the extra items seemed impossibly frustrating at times. But, after several months, I had a fabulous kit that I feel truly proud to offer in the Supplies Shop.

The 2021 version of this calligraphy kit made a lot of appearances under Christmas trees all over the world this month!

    Biggest Regret

When I headed into 2021, I intended to create a “Watercolor for Beginners” online course. Unfortunately, that was something that never made it onto my agenda this year! I’m hoping to work on a course next year … but finding the time then might be unrealistic. I’ve got a big personal change coming up then, so we’ll see how things develop (keep reading to find out what’s going on)!

I love watercolor, and I want to share everything I know with you! That didn’t happen this year, but hopefully it will soon.

    Most Popular Calligraphy Style

TPK is known for its calligraphy, and the most popular calligraphy worksheet on the site this year was the Amy, followed closely by the Janet. Both styles are clean and elegant, which marks a shift from previous years, when the most popular style was the bohemian — and slightly wild! — Kaitlin Style.

The Amy Style worksheet was the most downloaded calligraphy worksheet set this year.

    Biggest Headache

The most stressful, what-do-I-do 2021 day for TPK was October 1st. That day, a deluge of “MAIL SERVICE SUSPENDED” Supply Shop orders landed on my doorstep, and they kept coming. I found out later that the US Postal Service had suspended shipping service to Australia and New Zealand. Writing to the customers who were affected, issuing refunds, and updating the returned inventory was a pain. I understand now why service was suspended (there’s a backlog of undelivered packages Down Under), but it certainly led to a stressful couple of days!

I hope to never see these dreaded pink stickers again!

    Most Popular Blog Post

This year, the most popular blog post on the site was 8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet). People have really meshed with that article, probably because just about everyone is looking to improve their everyday handwriting. I won’t be surprised if the Improve Your Handwriting article retains the “most popular blog post” title next year, too!

    What’s In Store for 2022

I usually go into the New Year with loose goals and plans for TPK. Rarely do I ever write articles in advance! This year is different, though, because Hernán and I will be welcoming a baby girl with a Valentine’s Day due date. I’ve been working on a maternity leave since June, and I can specifically tell you that there are fabulous tutorials headed your way.

Intricate Golden Butterfly Envelope Art Tutorial
In March, I’ll walk you through exactly how to make this envelope art! My “maternity leave” starts on Valentine’s Day, but don’t worry: the TPK blog has plenty of articles scheduled and ready to inspire.

In addition to tutorials, I’ve got two worksheets finished and ready for you. One is a food-themed Not Your Average Calligraphy Drills sheet, which will be released in March. The other — and I’m really excited about this one — is a cursive penmanship worksheet. It will teach you how to write in gorgeous cursive with a vintage flair. You can expect to see that in April! Then, if I end up with a fairly mellow baby, I hope to work on a watercolor eCourse in the second half of the year.

    lace butterfly thank you card

As we make our way into 2022, I’d like to say thank you for keeping this website vibrant and alive. Next year will mark a decade of this blog’s existence (!!!). Your support, in all of its different manifestations, have kept it going strong! I’m looking forward to getting to be creative in 2022 with you, and for many more years to come.

    Happy New Year!

OMG! I look forward to your emails and check out many of your YouTube tutorials. I never dreamed my illuminated letter would be included in an email! I’m completely flabbergasted! I made the S for my parents, and I poured so much love and time into it. They proudly have it hanging in their living room. Thanks so much for the inspiration!

I’m delighted to hear your exciting news about your expecting a baby girl in February! Congratulations, Lindsey and Hernan!! <3 <3 <3

I'm always so happy to read a new blog post from you. Although my focus has been and still is the art of Zentangle, I am so interested in calligraphy too. Each post reminds me not to let that interest wane. One of these days, I will bring out the Beginners Modern Calligraphy course box I purchased from you several years ago … and simply BEGIN!! 🙂

Happy New Year, Lindsey, and may it bring all good things to you and your family. <3

✨I’ve been making these little calligraphy Chr ✨I’ve been making these little calligraphy Christmas trees for years. They’re a go-to whenever I need a quick gift tag, envelope flourish, or something festive that doesn’t require a whole afternoon.

They look fancy, but they’re really just simple strokes stacked in different patterns. Truly: once you get the rhythm down, you can make a tree in under 30 seconds. 🎄

If you want to try them (there are six styles!), the tutorial is on the TPK Blog, and it’s called
“6 Simple Ways to Make a Calligraphy Christmas Tree.” Feel free to google it, or visit: thepostmansknock.com/6-simple-ways-to-make-a-calligraphy-christmas-tree/

It’s very beginner-friendly, video-based, and a great way to get some creativity in during a busy season. I hope you love it as much as I do. 💛

🎁 These printable gift tags are one of my favor 🎁 These printable gift tags are one of my favorite free printables on the TPK site. Just download, print, cut them out, and — if you want to — reinforce them with a bit of cardstock.

Inside the PDF you’ll find four designs: Festive Frida, Flourished Tree, Pine Boughs, and Merry & Bright. They’re all hand-drawn, and they make even the simplest wrapping look bespoke and artistic. 🎨

Pro tip: If you’ve got a bit of extra time, add a pop of watercolor or some gold dots; and consider mounting the tag on a contrasting piece of cardstock for extra oomph.

They’re free to download at: thepostmansknock.com/free-super-cool-hand-drawn-printable-gift-tags/ (or visit the link in my stories today). Happy holidays!

There’s something extra fun about a card that do There’s something extra fun about a card that doesn’t just open … it comes to life. ✨ This little stand-up tree might look fancy, but it’s totally approachable — relaxing to make, satisfying to embellish, and (my favorite part) it folds up perfectly to pop in the mail. 💌🎄

If you’re looking for a holiday project that feels creative and doable, this is *such* a good one. The printable template does half the work for you, and you can customize the rest with flourishes, white ink, ornaments, or whatever feels festive to you.

The full step-by-step tutorial is waiting for you on the TPK website; just head to the link in my bio and tap “Blog.” I think you’ll have as much fun making this as I did. ❤️

The other day, I was thinking about sending out ho The other day, I was thinking about sending out holiday cards, and I immediately dismissed the thought with, “I have zero time to calligraph envelopes for those.” ✍️

... But is that true? I put it to the test for the latest article on the TPK Blog. Using some time-saving tricks I’ve learned over the years (like using a watery ink, a bouncy calligraphy style, and minimal pencil guidelines), I timed myself making three envelope concepts. Two of them took 5 minutes or less. The most time-intensive took 5 minutes, 30 seconds. The envelopes still turned out looking elegant, especially with the help of some artistic postage stamp collages. 💌

After I chose this music to accompany this reel, i After I chose this music to accompany this reel, it dawned on me: drawing a calligraphy medallion is like, well, Belle’s arc with the Beast.

At first, it’s a bit of a weird situation. Strange shapes, questionable structure, possibly some growling (à la “YOU WILL JOIN ME FOR DINNER. That’s not a request!”) when the inevitable ink smudge happens. You keep thinking, “I’m not sure why I’m doing this ... should I hop on Felipe and gallop away?” 🐎

But something shifts as the medallion starts to come to life. And when you finish that last detail and pull back, the music swells. Light bursts from your paper like it did from Beast’s digits as he transformed into a stunningly beautiful prince. ✨ You’re practically in a ballroom celebrating, and, wait, did your furniture just turn into an adoring crowd that’s celebrating your fortitude and skill?

(And now you know how my mind works 🧠 ... I love a good metaphor, no matter how weak it may be!)

To learn how to make a calligraphy medallion, just search for “calligraphy medallion” on the TPK site (link in bio). You’ll find both free Blog tutorials and detailed premium worksheets.

... I’ll show myself out now. 🙈
