Description

This self-paced Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Online Course is every bit as effective as my in-person calligraphy workshops. There are no time or demonstration constraints, so I was able to include absolutely everything that you need to know! On film, I am able to communicate concepts from different shooting angles, and you can pause and re-watch videos as needed. If you don’t quite understand how to do something, there’s a “Discussion” portion under each lesson where you can ask questions. Lessons include a short quiz and homework assignments. Here’s the course layout, including video durations (minutes/seconds):

Lesson 1: Preparing to Create Pointed Pen Calligraphy

  • Video: Creating Faux Calligraphy (20:03)

Lesson 2: Pointed Pen Calligraphy Supplies

  • Video 1: Supplies (9:57)
  • Video 2: Prepping New Nibs (8:39)
  • Video 3: Setting Up Your Workspace (2:58)

Lesson 3: The Straight Pen Holder

  • Video 2: For the Lefties – Tips for Using the Straight Pen (5:47)

  • Video 4: Straight Calligraphy Drills (12:50)
  • Video 5: Writing Uppercase Letters (18:05)
  • Video 6: Writing Lowercase Letters (15:45)
  • Video 7: Writing Words (16:53)

Lesson 4: The Oblique Calligraphy Pen

  • Video 4: Writing Words With the Oblique Calligraphy Pen (17:14)
  • Video 5: Writing Words Without Guidelines (3:56)

Lesson 5 (Optional): Creating Copperplate Calligraphy

Note that this lesson includes a 10-page printable workbook that is separate from the course workbook. If you choose to complete this lesson, you will need a printer.

  • Video 2: Writing Lowercase Copperplate Calligraphy Letters (12:08)
  • Video 3: Writing Copperplate Words (20:45)

Lesson 6: Guidelines and Practice

  • Video 1: How to Draw Pencil Guidelines (4:24)
  • Video 2: Effective Practice Suggestions (4:29)

The course ends with a short video explaining your post-course homework. The total viewing time for this course is approximately 4.5 hours, but I’d recommend allocating two months to do everything that you’re asked to do in the course.

Once you purchase this listing, you will be given full access to the course videos and worksheet set! Please note that you must have or create an account on TPK to take the course. Really excited about this course! I haven’t officially begun the working through the videos, however the worksheets are very attractive, and I think it’s such a good hobby to pursue during lockdown.

My 9yr son said the following about The Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Course, “It’s good. I like how it shows the stuff instead of just saying it. It’s just about the right speed. You should do all of the work that she assigns to you because you really need all of the practice before the next bit. It’s fulfilling.”

One of my goals for 2020 was to try calligraphy, and now it’s a 2021 goal to actually start to make something I’m proud of. This course was one of the top recommended ones online while I was looking for options, and I’m really enjoying it! The worksheets and videos are clear and easy to understand. The recommended materials were easy to acquire from the TPK starter kit, and I even picked up a cute art water cup to enhance my workstation. I’d definitely recommend this for an encouraging start.

I’m slowly working my way through this course and totally enjoying it. Lindsey makes it all look so doable and fresh, she offers many tips and encouragement. I’m very happy I came upon her blog and this course.

I have been slowly making my way into the world of calligraphy. I have done multiple challenges in brush pen lettering and a different pen and ink calligraphy course so I wasn’t sure if i should start with the beginners course. I took the evaluating quiz and I was on the line but I love the way Lyndsey teaches-she presents how I think. Anyway, I am so glad i started at the beginning. Lyndsey is so thorough and I am now using an oblique pen which is fantastic and makes things so much easier! Yay!

I’ve been looking for online courses for calligraphy as I’m a visual learner and was so disappointed before because I’ve seen people who charge anywhere from $150 to $500 (!!!) who kept saying their over-priced classes and worksheets were an “investment” and I was under the (incorrect) assumption that pointed pen calligraphy was a really expensive, elitist hobby. Thank GOODNESS I was lucky enough to find Lindsey and her wonderful blog! Thank you for making it possible for so many of us to learn this wonderful art-form! I downloaded the online course so fast and am so so happy I did! The lessons are well thought-out and really help you advance from one skill to the next. Lindsey’s instructions are so clear and DETAILED, and her voice is so calm and she’s such an encouraging teacher, it’s been a joy learning from her. Her drills are soooo much better than others I’ve seen because they’re so creative and just plain FUN and really help you improve because it’s now such an enjoyable process. I’ve since downloaded more worksheets and plan to get the Intermediate video course as well. Thank you, Lindsey, for making this possible!!

This was an incredibly useful course for me. I wanted to learn proper handwriting and calligraphy as a way to destress and Lindsey did a fantastic job at making those courses as engaging and fun as the ones in-person. The course is both informative and beautifully made. I highly recommend getting the starter kit that she offers on her site as well. It’s a fantastic way to start assembling your calligraphy toolkit and add to it as you advance. Thank you Lindsey for making this course and for your hauntingly beautiful site and content.
