Intricate Teacup Envelope Art for "No More Boring Envelopes"

Last month, Laney Schenck asked me to participate in her annual “No More Boring Envelopes” event. Basically, a different artist makes a beautiful envelope every day of this month, and Laney posts it to her Instagram account. I never need an excuse to make envelope art, so of course I said yes! Today, I’ll show you how to make intricate teacup envelope art.

    1. Choose a Teacup

I love sending envelopes to my friend Simon, owner of Scribblers in the UK. (You might recall that Simon was the star of this envelope!) It was easy to choose tea as a theme for this envelope because tea comes up a lot when I chat with Simon. He’s either just had tea, on his way to have tea, or thinking about the next time he’ll have tea. So, I chose to draw my favorite teacup to commemorate his love for tea: “Singapore Bird” by Adams.

I am obsessed with Adams’ “Singapore Bird” china. What’s not to love about this color combination and tranquil motif?

If you’re not convinced about “Singapore Bird”, try searching Google Images for another teacup motif. The search term “vintage teacup” is a great place to start!

    2. Draw a Pencil Draft

Teacup envelope art benefits enormously from a pencil draft. I used a photo of the “Singapore Bird” cup and a real-life cup as a reference to create a pencil drawing.

    teacup illustration pencil draft
If you’re afraid of freehand drawing, don’t be afraid to print off a photo and trace it with a light box.

Then, I filled out the rest of the envelope with flourishes and botanical elements that coordinate with the design on the teacup.

    Teacup Illustration Pencil Draft
I find it easiest to create pencil drafts with mechanical pencils. They’re less apt to get dull or smudge.

    3. Go Over the Draft With Ink

I needed a completely waterproof burgundy ink, so I mixed two shades of Ziller: Cardinal Red and Soot Black. If I know I’ll be using watercolor on my envelope art, I always use Ziller ink because it’s incredibly waterproof.

    Mixing Ziller Inks
While I mixed inks to achieve a burgundy color, I think you could just use “Cranberry” Ziller ink for a similar tone.

Next, I used a straight pen fitted with a Nikko G nib to trace over my illustrations.

Drawing Over the Draft With Ziller Ink
The Nikko G nib is great for illustrations because of its medium flex.

I finished up by using a Brause EF66 nib (in an oblique pen) to trace over the flourishes. I prefer the stroke contrast of the EF66 for flourishes! Once the ink dried, I erased my pencil guidelines.

I might have used the Brause EF66 nib for flourishes, but I reverted back to the Nikko G to write Simon’s address in Kaitlin Style calligraphy. The Nikko G tends to write small calligraphy better than flexible nibs.

    4. Add Watercolor to the Teacup Envelope Art

I couldn’t match every color on the teacup exactly, but I gave it my best shot with a Daniel Smith turquoise for the body of the teacup.

Then, after the turquoise watercolor had dried, I used assorted Greenleaf & Blueberry watercolors to fill in the rest of the cup and the botanical elements. I chose to use G&B paints because they tend to be pretty earthy and mellow.

Once I finished, I used a tiny paintbrush to apply tiny dots of yellow ochre to the envelope. This gives the envelope a quaint, cute look.

To finish up, I applied Microglaze to the envelope once it had dried. That way, none of my watercolor will streak or smear if the envelope encounters moisture en route to Suffolk.

I really enjoyed getting to unplug for an afternoon and make this teacup envelope art! Last week was a bit of a whirlwind due to the beginner’s calligraphy course redesign and calligraphy kit launch, so I needed a relaxing project to work on. Envelope art is one of my favorite things to create because two people benefit from it: the creator and the recipient! I hope that this envelope inspires you to make some pretty mail art. For more examples of mail art, see the #nomoreboringenvelopes hashtag on Instagram (and/or check out additional TPK mail art tutorials)!

    Happy creating!

    Warmly,

This is such a beautiful envelope. It’s a little harder than my current skill level, but summer is beginning and stretching skills is a good way to spend long days.

There is nothing like a clean, well-organized wate There is nothing like a clean, well-organized watercolor chart. I used to make watercolor chart layouts using math and grids (which, trust me, was painful for someone like me, who doesn’t *love* numbers/measuring/calculations) ... then it occurred to me that I could use Photoshop to give myself a little boost. Much less math and fretting, which for me equals much more joy! Palette is from @greenleafblue — she made it so I could have a gorgeous palette for “The Calligraphy Book”, and this color chart definitely helped to boost the aesthetic of an already stunning supply. 🎨😍

If you’re curious about this technique for making a watercolor chart, you can search the TPK website for “watercolor chart” ... there’s a detailed blog post over how to use the template method that I’m showing you here!

An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of thos An X-Acto knife (aka a hobby knife) is one of those tools that is indispensable for a lot of applications. It was designed to make precise cuts, which, of course, it does well! But, you can also use it to scrape off unwanted ink smears (pro tip: after the fact, you can smooth disturbed paper fibers with a pebble), create interesting interior cuts, trim tiny details that scissors can’t reach, make stencils and templates, refine collage elements, and gently correct small drawing or calligraphy mistakes.

I have used X-Acto knives for many TPK Blog tutorials, but up until last week, I’d never written a guide that puts the X-Acto knife front and center. That guide now exists, and you can find it by visiting the link 🔗 in my profile. Be sure to watch the tutorial video!

Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a Hard to fit everything in, but this was 2025 in a nutshell at TPK! 🥜

This year, I loved teaching at @thehappyevercrafter’s Workshop Week and participating in @calmingcalligraphy’s World Calligraphy as Meditation Day. And seeing the TPK calligraphy kit featured in @newyorkermag’s 2025 holiday gift guide was an unexpected (and delightful) cherry on top! 🍒

So much of what happened over the past year, though, was shaped by the TPK Premium community. Their questions and feedback helped guide Hand Lettering 101, while their encouragement fueled tutorials on topics ranging from turning red wine into calligraphy ink to illustrating recipes, painting with a wedge brush, and creating greeting cards and envelope art. 💌 That same support made it possible to create new worksheets and resources that others were able to enjoy as well, which I’m very grateful for.

For a fuller recap (with helpful links and details) I shared a 2025 reflection on the TPK blog (link in bio).

✦ Finetec gold → bright, cheerful, and versatile
✦ Greenleaf & Blueberry faux brass → softer, muted, and stunning
✦ Yasutomo pale gold → velvety, subtle shimmer with a sensible amount of sparkle

I love having all three on hand and choosing based on the feel I want for a project. It’s tough to go wrong! ✨
