Description

This self-paced Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Online Course is every bit as effective as my in-person calligraphy workshops. There are no time or demonstration constraints, so I was able to include absolutely everything that you need to know! On film, I am able to communicate concepts from different shooting angles, and you can pause and re-watch videos as needed. If you don’t quite understand how to do something, there’s a “Discussion” portion under each lesson where you can ask questions. Lessons include a short quiz and homework assignments. Here’s the course layout, including video durations (minutes/seconds):

Lesson 1: Preparing to Create Pointed Pen Calligraphy

  • Video: Creating Faux Calligraphy (20:03)

Lesson 2: Pointed Pen Calligraphy Supplies

  • Video 1: Supplies (9:57)
  • Video 2: Prepping New Nibs (8:39)
  • Video 3: Setting Up Your Workspace (2:58)

Lesson 3: The Straight Pen Holder

  • Video 4: Straight Calligraphy Drills (12:50)
  • Video 5: Writing Uppercase Letters (18:05)

  • Video 4: Writing Words With the Oblique Calligraphy Pen (17:14)

Lesson 5 (Optional): Creating Copperplate Calligraphy

Note that this lesson includes a 10-page printable workbook that is separate from the course workbook. If you choose to complete this lesson, you will need a printer.

  • Video 2: Writing Lowercase Copperplate Calligraphy Letters (12:08)
  • Video 3: Writing Copperplate Words (20:45)

  • Video 2: Effective Practice Suggestions (4:29)

The course ends with a short video explaining your post-course homework. The total viewing time for this course is approximately 4.5 hours, but I’d recommend allocating two months to do everything that you’re asked to do in the course.

Once you purchase this listing, you will be given full access to the course videos and worksheet set! Please note that you must have or create an account on TPK to take the course. If you do not have an account, you can easily create one during the checkout process (or create one now). I was a complete beginner of calligraphy and using a dip pen. I was thinking calligraphy would be too difficult to learn for years and I was not interested at all – then one day I came across Lindsey’s blog about this course. It looked like so much fun and easy to start so decided to do it! I am so glad I did. I purchased a box of The TPK Modern Calligraphy Starter Kit and that was a really good idea! I enjoyed the course very much. Thank you for answering my email questions when I stumbled on things – it was very helpful and encouraging. The course was just about right. I was not overwhelming with the amount and the length. I feel that I learned the solid beginning skills from the best that made me confident. I am still a beginner but Lindsey gave me a lot of informations and tools to continue on. What I learned in this course will stay with me forever! Thanks Lindsey. I really liked thIs course, so I purchased the Intermediate Course too. Right now I am working on Amy Style Course which is really fun too, and I am planning take the Intermediate Course soon after.

I never believed that a video course could be as effective as in-person instruction, until this course. Although Lindsey offers the opportunity to reach out to her with questions, I have not needed to exercise that option so far because she has already anticipated so well what I am thinking at every stage of the process. Her warmth and friendliness, conveyed even in video, do assure me that I am truly welcome to ask any question which may arise and know that she will provide any extra support I may need at any time.

Lindsey makes it so easy to follow along and learn at your own pace. She’s also super encouraging, down to earth, and answers all your questions – usually right after you think of them! What strikes me most is that this course is an incredible value. It’s honestly crazy that she doesn’t charge more – especially considering all the knowledge, tips, tricks, and suggestions she shares. If you’re on the fence, swing your leg over to the other side. This is money well spent, and I will enjoy calligraphy and adding calligraphy to projects for years to come! I’m also already eyeing the Intermediate Course…

This is a great course! Wether you know absolutely nothing about calligraphy or even if you know a little and have had some practice, this course will be really beneficial! When I started the course, I was comfortable with a straight pen, but awkward with an oblique and still trying to figure out pressure control with my nib. This course really helped solidify what I already knew and also help me become more comfortable with the skills I was struggling with. Lindsey takes the time to explain tools and techniques that will be super helpful for anyone, but especially those who’ve never used a dip pen before! There’s a good mix of letter practice and small projects that makes the course both instructional and a lot of fun! Thanks so much for the time & effort you put in to these courses, Lindsey!

Squashed my fears and doubts and gave me confidence! I have always loved lettering and have wanted to get into calligraphy, but styles like Copperplate intimidated me. Then add that weird looking fancy pen and I felt like it was out of reach. I first visited a stationery story to see if there was “kit” I can get started. There was. I wasn’t inspired. I needed more. I searched and found The Postman’s Knock and a whole host of resources! It included the beginner’s guide and the beginner’s course. Both were perfect ways to take away the intimidation of it all. Lots of practice and videos – I still keep the exemplars that were included in the course as reference. It’s amazing how much more comfortable I was at the end of the course and even more so as time goes on and I address more greeting cards and envelopes! Practice makes close to perfect and this really helped me get started. I’m so grateful.

This course is a beautiful bundle of tips, tricks and real, practical knowledge – such a great and essential mix for beginners. Lindsey’s TPK courses are an absolute catalyst for discovering magic and love with ink, paper, colours, nibs and with yourself. With easy, helpful, honest instructions, guidance and smart tips, I found my practice sessions to be a therapeutic me-time; a time to pause and revel in the magic that unfolds before my eyes. I had been interested in calligraphy for two years, but it can be extremely tricky to find the time to teach yourself. It was quite an ordeal to “be in the mood” and look for free online videos but finding the time to actually sit when you’re juggling multiple jobs and life admin can be a whole other tedious task on its own. I stumbled upon Lindsey’s TPK website when I was researching (better) calligraphy supplies – an upgrade – as the ones I owned were cheap buys. Having completed this course and currently taking the Intermediate course, I can say that I am never again going back to free classes where you learn little to no practical and honest tips. Lindsey’s courses are nurturing, inspiring, (and affordable!), and so so soooo good for the soul. I’m definitely a fan for life! x

I am convinced that The Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Course is supplying me with the fundamental skills I need to be a great calligrapher (and for an affordable price!). Hi Lindsey Everything I am learning is because of you. The Beginners Course has been extra special for me. I never thought I would be able to write with a dip pen, never mind some of the sheets I have purchased. I know that I have been away from the course because of illness but I will continue with right to end. I am not a quitter. I can’t even express to you how much I appreciate everything that you have taught me. The video course is the best thing I could have ever done for myself. Thank you so much for all that I have learned and excited about what is to come next. You are amazing Lindsey and I am so very happy that you are my teacher. I’m very grateful for you too. 😊 You are my teacher and friend, and this is so awesome. 🙂 Have a great day. sue 🐝

As someone who had no knowledge of creating calligraphy when I first purchased this course, it was an excellent course for a completely beginning learner. I have found that often artists have a difficult time breaking down art into incremental steps for those who are just beginning. But Lindsey is very good at taking you step by step and giving you a thorough understanding of the reasons for doing things and how they work and what to do. It also keeps you from the many mistakes and frustrations beginning learners can have if they try to learn calligraphy without the course. Since completing this beginner’s course I have been able to create many more projects and has become a wonderful, relaxing hobby for me. The Modern Calligraphy Beginner’s Course is an excellent investment if you are looking to pick up a dip pen for the first time.
